Sturgill, Hunter From: Sent: To: Subject: External Email - Exercise Cau(cid:415)on Juno Monday, November 2, 2026 8:05 PM Historic Preservation Office 706 E Monroe Dear Board Members, Please vote against the demoli(cid:415)on of the bungalow at 706 E Monroe. My husband and I have lived in Travis Heights since 1981. Even as we near 80 years of age, we s(cid:415)ll walk regularly in our beau(cid:415)ful neighborhood. The sweet house on Monroe has always been a favorite. Its sweet yellow light is always a welcomed sight and perfectly reflects the warmth of our neighborhood. It is heartbreaking that people now see our community as an investment opportunity. The architectural jewels con(cid:415)nue to be destroyed. The very fabric of our neighborhood is being unraveled, house by house. We strongly urge you to save this precious house!! I’m sorry we are out of town for the mee(cid:415)ng, but we plead with you to vote against demoli(cid:415)on. Monroe St. External Email - Exercise Caution To Chairman Ben Heimsath and members of the Historic Landmark Commission: I urge you to reject the application for demolition of the house at 706 E. Monroe and to initiate historic zoning. This beautiful Craftsman bungalow home is in perfect condition. It’s a significant landmark on East Monroe, recognized by many Travis Heights and Fairview Park neighbors for its charm and the unique carport lean-to addition designed by the late Bob Mather, the most well-known architect who lived in the neighborhood. Professor Mather taught Architecture for many years at the University of Texas, and his wife Jean Mather was the co-founder of the South River City Citizens. She was also a member of the Historic Landmark Commission from 2002 to 2008. The Mathers were both very involved for years in the preservation and improvement of our neighborhood. This home is almost 99 years old, retains high integrity, and meets three of the additional criteria required for landmark designation: architecture, because it is a good example of craftsman bungalow architecture, historical association with architectural design by Bob Mather, and community value. It would be tragic to allow this home to be demolished only to allow the 4,000 square foot mansion at 700 East Monroe to be made even bigger. The mansion is already out of place in the neighborhood, and it should not be made even more out of place. The home at 706 East Monroe meets the following Designation Criteria for City of Austin historic landmark status. 1) The building is more than 50 years old. 2) The building retains high integrity. 3) Properties must meet two criteria for landmark designation (LDC §25-2-352). It meets three criteria: · Architecture. The building is a good example of Craftsman bungalow architecture. · Historical associations. The Carport / lean-to / rear porch was designed by UT Architecture Professor and Travis Heights resident Bob Mather. He was the husband of SRCC co-founder Jean Mather, who was also a member of the Historic Landmark Commission from 2002 to 2008. · Community value. The property possesses a unique location, physical characteristics, and a significant feature that contribute to the character and image of the neighborhood. Thank you for considering my comments and for your work to preserve our history. Sincerely, Clifton Ladd SRCC Historic Preservation Committee Co-Chair 3 CAUTION: This is an EXTERNAL email.
