We sent out (adoptive, foster, or transfer) 103 animals in late April/early May with 60 being cats and 41 dogs, of which 29 were large breed adults! That is 29 more animals than last month during the same period which included 17 more large breed adult dogs! April 2026 (FY26) saw 1,068 domestic animals impounded at AAS. This is a 26% increase from March 2026 which brought in 849 domestic animals to the shelter. The remaining number was wildlife. Intake Sources A breakdown of the sources for intake. Most animals came from Animal Protection Officers while in the field. The number of strays impounded increased by 63%. If an animal’s status is updated to “euthanized” in April 2026, ShelterBuddy counts that as an April 2026 euthanasia—even if the animal was euthanized in May 2025. This slide shows the actual data for April 2026, not the audited data. 82 records have been updated so far. 10 April 2026 had a live-release rate of 95.93% This means that of all companion animal outcomes for the month of April, 95.93% or 942 were “live” and involved adoption, rescue transfer, return-to-owner, etc. Live Outcomes by Animal Type This chart shows how many of each animal type had a positive or live outcome during April. Critters 7 Breakdown per Outcome Type This chart shows the breakdown of each kind of live outcome by the number of animals with that live outcome. For example, all 8 animals “returned to habitat” were Community Cats. Each bar is equal to 100% of the outcome category. Adopted Returned to Owner Returned to Habitat Rescue Transfer 11 408 animals were adopted this month. This is the same number of animals adopted last month. While rare, this does happen from time to time! Adoptions by Type (Age, Breed) This chart shows the total number of adoptions per animal type. APRIL 12 Animals in foster care in the month • 352 different people/families fostered. • As of May 1, there are 308 animals in foster care. • In the month of March, 32 animals were a part of the Finder to Foster Program. • 76 animals were adopted directly from foster care. • 191 new foster applications were processed. • There are currently 917 members (approved foster care providers) in the foster program’s GivePulse group. Animals transferred to rescue In April, 21 different rescue partners pulled a total of 446 domestic animals from the Austin Animal Services. The total included 200 kittens, 79 dogs, and 80 puppies. 43 cats were transferred for Spay/Neuter/Return. Additionally, there was one rabbit rescued. 13 Animals returned to owner April 2026 saw 79 animals reclaimed. Intact animals adopted or RTO No animals were adopted intact. Animals lost, stolen, or missing There were no animals reported as lost, stolen, or missing in April at AAS. Animals died in shelter or in foster 2 animals died in shelter.
