Pete commented the Community Court is a court of law, and in addition to the primary function is a social services provider. There are various services the Community Court provides: - Connor Kenny, Past Chair Planning Commission - Pete Valdez, Director of Downtown Austin Community Court Speakers: -Some of the homeless they encounter have a criminal background that go beyond a Class C Misdemeanor; which means they must be served in a different/higher court of law. - Community Court funds some support of 59 housing units where they can directly place homeless individuals. -In 2016 the Downtown Austin Community Court became a member of the HOST (Homeless Outreach Street Team) -Current wait list for case management is over 200 people What is the number of case managers needed to get 200 people off of the waiting list? COS Brown commented his intent was to entertain a Q&A session the board may have concerning the data provided, but not to review all of the data that was provided prior to the meeting. Commissioner Hausenfluck asked Chief Brown if he has noticed any trends upwards 1 or downwards in the quarterly data as it relates to response times or any other variables. Commissioner Kelly had a question concerning the new ambulance units and where does the new units place Austin in terms of population growth. Does Austin have enough units now and are responses times better? COS Brown answered their questions and committed to Commissioner Gonzales requests of adding any additional categories for/of reporting stats on future quarterly reports. 3. A memo from Commissioner Harris and Webber was emailed to the Public Safety Committee suggesting that maybe the Public Safety Commission should be abandoned due to the recent establishment of the Public Safety Committee. Council Member Flannigan shared his thoughts on what the roles of each group are, and the benefit both groups could bring to the City of Austin when working/collaborating together. - Role of Public Safety Committee functions to oversee implementation of council adopted policy/directions from council. - Role of Public Safety Commission as a place for additional public input that the Public Safety Committee does not get; unless the Commission shares/provides an update - A goal is to see the Committee and Commission coordinate scheduling/collaborating to work on issues coming up in future council meetings.
