Community Conversation with Exhibit Artists August 8th, 2024 5:30pm - 7:30pm Ruiz Library, 1600 Grove Blvd, Austin, TX 78741 Join us in discussion with artists from our Community Exhibit: The Diosa Energy Within. Artists will share insight about their work and experiences, and you are invited to participate in the roundtable! We will reflect about the Diosas in our lives who have made an impact. Refreshments will be provided. Please arrive early to explore the community exhibit prior to the event. Youth and Family Education Cosecha Summer Camp weekly field trip to learn more about the theme of the week, and a swimming field trip to Walnut Creek Pool to cool off from the Summer heat. The Education team has been actively working with the Cosecha Summer Camp. Each week they have provided camp for 24 participants ages 5-12 at the Asian American Resource Center (Cameron Rd. Austin). Campers have explored topics such as Family, Legends and Myths, and Indigenous People. Camp Instructors and Activity Specialists have lead enrichment activities based off these topics and connected them to Mexican American Culture. Participants also have the opportunity to go on a Cosecha has been also welcomed a variety of guest speakers and artists. During Indigenous people week, Campers got a visit from Austin Water and learned about water conservation. During Kid’s Rights week, Waterloo Greenway hosted a playscape design workshop instructed by Monstrum Design. These playscape designs will potentially be used to help redesign Palm School Park. The MACC Education staff is looking forward to continuing the fun during the second half of summer and providing quality cultural activities to our community. Caminos Teen Leadership Program Caminos Leaders joined the Red Salmon Arts Resistencia Book Store Workshops. They participated in Barrio Writers; Dr. Lila Rosas talks and Brown Wellness healing circle with Dr. Zamarripa, Chicanx psychologist. The Caminos team is ready to do the first-round of interviews for the 2025 class of Caminos on July 10th & July 11th. Second rounds will be held at the end of the month in person at the Carver Library. Caminos leaders will be hosting kid’s activities at Hillside concerts during the month of July. Academia Cuauhtli Bilingual Education Program Summer Camp: Aztech Kidz Code Aztech Kidz Code is a highly unique out-of-school time bilingual summer camp at Mendez Middle School in Dove Springs. This free camp centers a culturally relevant STEM AND Arts education based on Indigenous ancestry, art, culture, science and math. Sessions are taught by experienced teachers in STEM, Arts, and Indigenous practices with lived experiences. Youth explore their identity and historical ancestral roots as artists, scientists, and mathematicians through custom developed curriculum on a) STEM coding, b) visual and, c) performance arts. Aztech Kidz Code is offered at Mendez Middle School thanks to a partnership and the support of AISD Board Trustee Ofelia Zapata for District 2. The new site provides access to expanded STEM and art classroom space as well as use of the beautiful auditorium and stage for the performance danza based activities. This year also offers participation to middle school aged youth for the first time. 3 Sessions: Session 1: June 17 - June 27 Session 2: July 15 - July 25 Session 3: July 29 - Aug 8 Save the Date! Graduation Aug 10th Outreach Events (Past): Outreach and Marketing Long Center “Drop In” Thursday Concert Series Every Thursday from 6:00-10:00pm the Long Center offers free music on their outdoor stage. Families come to enjoy the event, with food trucks, DJ’s and local community organizations. The MACC has a table at this weekly event to promote our ongoing programs and events. Free and open to the public with RSVP on the Long Center website. Next one is July 11th! Juneteenth at the Carver MACC Staff lent a hand during the Carver’s annual Juneteenth event on June 15th. The attendance at this event was great, with plenty of families coming together to enjoy live music and outdoor activities. Outreach Events (Upcoming): “Yo Soy Austin” Exhibit at the Austin History Center Soy Austin, Soy Travis County” is a program by the Austin History Center (AHC) that recognizes and preserves the contributions of Latin American artists who live in Austin or Travis County. The program aims to fill in gaps in the AHC's historical record of these artists. On June 30th, community gathered to celebrate these local artists, including Tori Baltierra from the Tiarras and Zeke Castro (pictured). Rainey Street Trail Foundation Saturday, July 13 36 East Avenue, Austin, Texas 78701 Join The Trail Conservancy in celebrating the new Rainey Street TrailHead! This event will be 9:00 AM – 11:00 am and will be outdoors, please dress accordingly. Austin Lowriding Event Saturday, September 1 Palmer Events Center Oakwood Cemetery “Unificar” Historical Exhibit with Tejano Genealogy Society of Austin- opening reception on July 27 (morning) Ballet Folklorico of Austin’s Guelaguetza on July 27 (evening-6pm) Performances highlighting dance traditions from Oaxaca- can’t be missed! Signature Events & Collaborations Awards of Excellence On June 29th at the Long Center, the ESB MACC held an intimate ceremony for family and friends of our Awards of Excellence winners. The ceremony featured heartfelt recognitions and remarks from our awardees and their loved ones. Host Yvonne Nava from KVUE-TV Austin shared some of our awardees greatest accomplishments, so we can celebrate their contributions to the cultural arts. Midway through the ceremony, Mariachi Relampago surprised us with lively mariachi tunes that entertained us and reminded us of the power of the performing arts. It was a lovely afternoon! We laughed, we cried, and we celebrated excellence in our community. Thanks to the ESB MACC Advisory Board and MACC Staff for this special afternoon! The dates are July 20th to August 31st (No session on August 10th). Sessions are free and open to the public, from 10am-12pm at Rudy Mendez Recreation Center. Join the Bronze Band Community Band Project & explore the diverse roots, rhythms, and melodies that make up the incredible mezcla (mix) that is Mexican American music today! Parks & Recreation News The Austin Parks and Recreation Department invites community members to a virtual meeting with finalists for the Museums and Cultural Programs Division Manager Position. The selected candidate will lead and oversee an annual budget of $8.2M for the operations of City of Austin museums, galleries, and cultural centers and spaces. Join Austin Parks and Recreation Thursday, July 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for an online meet and greet. Register for the Zoom meeting. During the meet-and-greet, attendees will hear about the hiring process, candidates' backgrounds, and provide feedback on each candidate. The Museums and Cultural Programs Division provides safe and inclusive spaces where people explore creativity and identity through the arts, histories and cultures of Austin and the world.
