Having served as Director of Austin Public Library since 2017, Roosevelt Weeks has accepted the position of Library Director for Fort Bend County Libraries in Fort Bend County, Texas. Mr. Weeks’ final day as Austin Public Library Director will be September 27, 2024. Beginning September 28, 2024 current Assistant Director Hannah Terrell will become Acting Director for Austin Public Library. North Village Branch Renamed John Gillum Branch The Austin City Council has passed an ordinance renaming the North Village Branch Library on Steck Avenue after former Austin Public Library Facilities Manager John Gillum. John Gillum worked for Austin Public Library from 1979 until his retirement in 2019. He was the Facilities Planning Manager and later the Facilities Process Manager, overseeing every aspect of the planning design, construction, and renovation of all Austin Public Library facilities and playing a significant role in the relocation and development of the North Village Branch Library. APL Staff Development Day Austin Public Library leadership hosted a Staff Development Day themed “URL: Unreal, Relearn, and Learn” where all staff attended a day-long virtual working session. The day-long working session included a keynote speaker, leadership presentations, and 14 different cohort groups with 30+ staff in each group. The cohort groups were administered by leadership and guided staff through three themed learning sessions focused on adaptability and resilience. I.D.E.A.L. Summer Workshop Series This summer, APL's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access in Libraries (I.D.E.A.L.) office hosted the summer series "Organizational Culture Transformation” workshop. I.D.E.A.L partnered with AISD's Organizational Transformation Team to facilitate and explore essential topics of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in libraries. The collaborative series offered a dynamic range of thoughtfully designed sessions to deepen understanding and enhance daily operations by creating an inclusive library experience for all. Through interactive workshops and expert-led discussions, 1 participants were able to gain insight and learn practical tools to adopt equitable practices and policies that embrace differences and diverse communities. Spicewood Springs Branch Expand Language Learning Programs Over the past year, the number language learning programs and programs hosted fully in world languages at Spicewood have grown enormously. In addition to weekly Talk Time and ESL classes, Spicewood is now offering Practiquemos classes, monthly Ukrainian story times, and occasional programs in Mandarin Chinese. Howson Branch Hosts Pride-Themed “Games Y’all” In partnership with the Museum of Human Achievement, Howson Branch Library hosted an August pride-themed “Games Y’all”, a monthly showcase highlighting queer independent game developers, digital artists, industry insiders and fans of the medium. Almost 150 people attended the program, socializing, gaming and sharing input and feedback on each other’s projects. Mural at Little Walnut Creek Branch Little Walnut is getting a mural by East End Eclectic! Founder of East End Eclectic, Ruben Esquivel, is a local artist of Mexican, Spanish, and Native American descent. Ruben describes himself as a muralist, canvas artist, and designer and credits his exposure to various creative outlets to pursuing a multidisciplinary art career. East End Eclectic is a full-service creative agency that provides opportunities for artists. Their current focus is on large scale portrait work highlighting indigenous subjects and people of color and painting them in spaces that once belonged to them. Central Library Special Events In August 2024, Central Library Special Events hosted a total of 13 events, including 11 rentals, 2 co-sponsorships, and 4 film/photography requests, with a total estimated attendance of 1,790. Co-sponsorship partners include: - City Manager’s Office – Department Directors Meeting (8/21) - African American Heritage Network – AAHN Speed Mentoring 2024 (8/30) COA Department events include: event - City Manager’s Office – Department Directors Meeting (8/21) – co-sponsored - Austin Public Health – Meeting (8/28) – rental event, 50% discount applied for COA Department per fee schedule - African American Heritage Network – AAHN Speed Mentoring 2024 (8/30) – NOTE: AAHN is not a City Department but is City-affiliated group 2 9 Capital Projects Updates Faulk Building and History Center Cepeda Trail 95% Construction Phase Updates: Faulk building progress continues with addressing punch walk items. Final punch walk items remain at the History Center. Next Milestone: Final Completion anticipated in September 2024; 95% Construction Phase Expected End: 3rd quarter 2024 Actual Start: Nov. 4, 2022 Complete Updates: The Meter for the Cepeda Trail has been connected. Light Poles have been rewired and light are now on. Trash can have been added to the trail alignment to reduce the litter. Next Milestone: N/A Expected End: August 2024 Actual Start: Oct. 20, 2023 / Carver and Yarborough Bid Phase Updates: Carver: TBD Carver will go in-house to be bid out by APL facilities (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, solar panels, decking repair, and roof overlay. This project will likely be a complete tear off of the existing roofing system. Yarborough: APL Facilities received quotes for Yarborough roof overlay Re- Roof has been schedule for 9/9/24. 3-4 weeks for roofing repairs and 2 weeks for clerestory repair. Proposal for new Air and Heating Equipment has been received from Entech. Next Milestone: APL will begin the procurement process for the roofing and air conditioning. Finalizing lead times on materials. Expected Start/End: TBD Actual Start: TBD Hampton Parking Lot Extension Construction Document Phase Updates: 100% Construction Drawings have been completed by the consultant. All documents required have been submitted for completeness review, permitting should be underway in late fall, for a winter construction start. The Hampton Project team is not anticipating branch closures. Next: Milestone: Level 3 Cost estimate for parking construction, Electrical upgrade, and Electric Vehicle charging has been produced. Expected Start/End: Fall 2024- Winter 2025 Little Walnut and Menchaca Design Proposal Phase Updates: The consultants are in Design Development and are at 60% completion. Site visits have been conducted with APL, consultant and CDS manager to review design concepts and front entry. Due to conditions of systems, APL will likely replace HVAC equipment on both prior to construction phase. Next Milestone: Review Design Development renderings. Completion of Design Development by end of August. Expected Start: 05/01/2025 Actual Start: TBD Old Quarry, Willie Mae Kirk, & St. John Construction and Design Phase Updates: The roof for Old Quarry has been completed. Due to the extensive remediation work, the interiors are down to the studs. HVAC replacement is expected in two weeks. Willie Mae Kirk is closed, and Facilities is removing existing furniture and shelving. Proposed plans and finishes have been presented to the Kirk family. Next Milestone. Furniture and millwork at Old Quarry to be finalized by early September. Remediation work at Willie Mae Kirk to be scheduled. Phased construction work to begin mid-September. Continue to award contracts for work. Meeting scheduled to review furniture and upholstery for St John in mid-September. Expected Start: July 15, 2024.
