Within the first 10 days of the new expansion, 722 new accounts were renewed or created for residents living within the Austin ETJ area alone. ALW is Turning 45! Little Walnut Creek Branch Library will be celebrating its 45th Birthday on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 11 AM - 2 PM. We guarantee it will be fun for ALL ages, with a petting zoo, face painter, balloon artist, and performers from local high schools. FREE food, games, and prizes as we invite all to come out and celebrate!" Marshalling Yard Outreach and APL tops 4,500 Enhanced Library Cards Austin Public Library, in collaboration with Austin Public Health – Homeless Strategy Division, organized an Art Program for the residents at the Marshalling Yard Temporary Emergency Shelter (MYES) on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. MYES, serves as a temporary shelter for approximately 200 residents. During the event, the outreach team distributed around 15 Enhanced Library Cards to the residents, marking a significant milestone as we surpassed the 4,000 mark! The provision of Enhanced Library Cards through outreach efforts, coupled with the addition of six (6) APL locations issuing cards, has enabled us to meet the high demand for these cards within the community. Presently, a total of nine locations across the city offer Enhanced Library Cards: Little Walnut, St. John, Southeast, Central, Cepeda, Menchaca, Millwood, Ruiz, and Terrazas. As of April 21, 2024, APL has issued over 4,500 Enhanced Library Cards – an achievement worth celebrating! 4 GABFEST Come celebrate literature with us at the first-ever Greater Austin Book Fest at the Central Library! GAB Fest is a fantastic chance for authors, illustrators, and readers from Hays, Williamson, and Travis Counties to connect and engage with their community. Meet over 80 talented local authors, have your books signed, shop with local booksellers discover the wonders of the Central Library, and immerse yourself in a day filled with panels, workshops, and programs. In addition, there will be an "All Day Storytime" presented by various authors; programs on publishing, genre talks, innovative technologies currently being used in publishing, and much more. APL Wins Austin Water Award The Austin Public Library was selected to receive an “Excellence in Reclaimed Water Project and Onsite Water Reuse Project” award at the Austin Water Excellence Awards Ceremony held Friday, April 26, 2024, at the Austin Central Library Special Event Center. Cody Scott, Facilities Process Manager accepted the award for the department. Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Austin Public Library is proud to celebrate Asian, Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AHPI) Heritage Month. Observed annually in May, Asian, Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to reflect upon and celebrate the remarkable role of the AHPI community in our nation’s history. From a Hula Halau Kae’epa dance performance and a boba tea party at Old Quarry branch to Introducing Sashiko and Paper Lei Making Storrytelling & Crafting at Southeast branch; 30+ amazing programs are planned across the library system to celebrate AANHPI, APL Volumes APL's podcast, APL Volumes kicked off its third (3rd) season on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the Central Library! Participants took a sneak peek at the new “Book Banter” season of the podcast which digs into wild but true backstories of books, their authors, and the threads that connect them to the world at large. The kickoff hosted a listen party of first episode about celebrity memoirs, while hanging out with the Volumes host, guests, and producers to get a look behind the scenes! Capital Projects Updates Faulk Building and History Center Cepeda Trail 95% Construction Phase Updates: Faulk building progress includes addressing punch walk items. Phase 1B work begins with rough electrical and drywall work. Landscaping at the History Center is nearly complete and interior storm window installation finishes this month. Next Milestone: Phase 1B work to continue in April 2024; 80% Construction Phase Expected End: 2nd quarter 2024 Actual Start: Nov. 4, 2022 Substantial Completion Updates: Trail alignment is constructed, the second round of tree maintenance to clean up debris and a brush pile will start 5/6/24. Electrical Meter address was updated to a half address, following the standard across the City of Austin. Next Milestone: Debris and brush clean up 5/6/24, date for primary electrical Connection by AE. Expected End: June 2024 Actual Start: Oct. 20, 2023 Carver and Yarborough Hampton Parking Lot Extension Bid Phase Updates: Carver: will also potentially go in-house to be bid out by Austin Public Library facilities (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, solar panels, decking repair, and roof overlay. Yarborough: will be taken in-house by Austin Public Library Facilities. We are currently bidding out heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. We have requested a bid and site visit for the roof overlay and clearstory repairs to be held on 4/23/24. Next Milestone: Receive bids from contracted vendors Expected Start/End: TBD Actual Start: TBD Old Quarry, Willie Mae Kirk, & St. John Design Phase Updates: Working thru procurement and establishing master agreement for council approval. Selecting finishes and furniture, including carpet, upholstery, seating, shelving is underway. Finalizing floor plans for review. Roof inspections, bidding, and envelope work proposals ongoing. Next Milestone: Old Quarry will close for construction June 17th and Willie Mae Kirk will close July 15th. Willie Mae Kirk and Old Quarry will officially begin construction in July. Award contracts for work. Floor plan approval, procurement award approved. Expected Start: Old Quarry construction July 15, 2024. Actual Start: TBD Last Revised 04-24-24 5 Site Plan and Schematic Design 40% Updates: The Hampton Project Team and Regional Storm Water Management discussed expanding with confirmed cost-sharing with watershed. Storm Water approved a Detention Pond waiver from the original construction. Approval was granted to use the waiver for the parking and future branch expansions. Next: Milestone: Continue to 60% Construction Drawings; plans will include civil set to detail pond repairs. Consultant to provide cost estimate for parking expansion, pond repair, electrical installation of lighting and upgrade of Electric Vehicle circuit panel. Expected Start/End: Summer 2024 – Fall 2024 Howson Substantial Completion Updates: RYCARS and the Manufacturer will inspect the roof overlay for 20-year warranty, site visit is scheduled for 4/23/24 Expected Start/End: June Actual Start: 01/10/2024 Little Walnut and Menchaca Design Proposal Phase Updates: Site visits and design charrettes completed with Capital Delivery project manager. Amendment for design work is pending per additional documentation from consultant and amendment proposal. Next Milestone: Scope and fees approval; start of Design Development phase.
