"We are very excited to be able to offer this series of events for the community to celebrate the freedom to read and free and open access and exchange of ideas. Libraries exist to give people access to all kinds of information, stories, and ideas – and unfortunately, that is increasingly under threat. This summer-long series of fun and informative events will highlight the importance of the freedom to read and why Austin Public Library stands against censorship and book banning.” -Roosevelt Weeks, Austin Public Library Director "Books take us on adventures, offer us new perspectives and ideas, and sometimes push us out of our comfort zones. They are multifaceted and not easily reduced to soundbites or headlines. That is what makes it so exciting and rewarding to be a reader! This summer we want to invite families and readers of all ages to explore recently challenged books with us; to read broadly and critically; to openly discuss which books strike chords with us as readers and what they made us think about. We hope you can join us." - Meghan Goel, Children's Book Buyer & Programming Director at BookPeople Find Banned Camp events on our event page here: Library.AustinTexas.gov/Events/BannedCamp Thank you to our partners: BookPeople, Austin Allies, Austin SBCWI, I Support #FReadom, Pease Park Conservancy, PEN AMERICA Austin Libraries exist to give people access to all kinds of information, stories, and ideas – and unfortunately, that is increasingly under threat. Digital Inclusion & STEM APL is one of 19 other Urban Library Council libraries participating in the Edge360 cohort. Edge is a management tool that guides libraries of all sizes to set measurable, strategic goals for digital inclusion and to engage government and local leaders in meaningful conversations about 21st-century community needs. The results of APL’s Edge 2.0 and Edge360 assessments were provided to our Strategic Planning Team to incorporate into our Strategic Plan. Equity, Diversity & Inclusion On May 5, Southeast Branch youth librarian Alicia Niwagaba was able to bring MathHappens to the Cinco de Mayo event at the Dove Springs Recreation Center. Kids delighted in being able to create their own images using giant tangrams, build pyramids using pit balls, and color geometric necklaces while inadvertently learning about math principles from UT math students. This was a great opportunity to introduce a large number of Dove Springs residents to the work provided by MathHappens, which will be taking place regularly at Southeast Branch in the future. Civic and Community Engagement Strategic Plan and Facility Master Plan. The Community Survey is live and available for everyone in the community – library users or not – to complete. Our goal is to have 10,000 surveys submitted. The survey is available in multiple languages. https://surveyhero.com/c/APLCommunity A team of community engagement consultants is also collecting responses from community members at a variety of local events. Group 4 will be onsite in late July to complete their branch visits / assessments. Staff Development Central Library managing librarians offered customer service training sessions for Adult Services, Youth, and Circulation staff. These sessions help staff understand expectations and feel more confident in optimizing the visitor experience. Workforce and Economic Development On May 31, the North Village Branch manager Michael Abramov was at El Dorado Café. He was approached by the owner / chef who must have seen the branch manager’s Austin Public Library lanyard. He told Michael that he worked on his business plan at the library on “Hancock” (Yarborough) and also uses the one on “Steck” (North Village). It is always gratifying and useful to know that the library can be of assistance for entrepreneurs and small business owners.
