Summer Reading Program 2019 Report Programs for ages 5-10 142 programs with 14,782 attendees We had a lot of fun this summer with some terrific programs! We had 7 different in-house created kit programs this year (Fairy Houses, Geronimo Stilton Party, Halloween in Summer, Magical Creatures, Space Camp, Super Narwhal and Jelly Party, Water Art). We hosted 16 different performers this year including the Austin Symphony, 123 Andres, All Rhythms, Austin Opera, Austin Reptile Show, Bernadette Nason, Bright Star Theatre, Buffalo Soldiers, Carolina Storyteller, Elizabeth Kahura, Magician John O’Bryant, Magik Theatre, Pollyanna Theatre, Rolie Polie Guacamole, Sandbank Shadow Factory, and Bill Balboa from Sea Grant Texas. APL’s in-house puppet troupe, Literature Live! also performed Jack and the Bean-stalk! Super Narwhal and Jelly Party Buffalo Soldiers Magical Creatures: How many more of these are there--can we go to all of the magical creatures programs? Halloween in Summer: "We had the best time OMG it was so much fun!!! Great program if this summer!! We have the best Library system around!!" Austin Opera: “The Austin Opera program for kids was great! Just the right mix of entertainment, fun and culture.” Buffalo Soldiers: "The Buffalo Soldiers were great. My grands loved participating in the storytelling activities. They gave informative in-formation about dangerous animals if ever in areas with them & what to do--we remained afterwards to ask more questions." Austin Symphony Partnership 7 programs at Central with 6,494 attendees “Loved having the Austin Symphony at the Milwood Library! My kids enjoyed having live music and touching/playing the instru-ments. This exposure is invaluable, and I appreciated it was available at the local library.” “A great exposure to kids to violin, cello, and other instruments in a very kid friendly manner. Thank you for the opportunity!” “We loved having Symphony events in North Austin!” Austin Symphony Art Park This was our second year of hosting this annual Austin tradition at the library and it was spectacular. We had an overwhelming response and are already planning for 2020 and 2021. The Austin Symphony creates 2 hours of programming that includes an instrument petting zoo for hands-on experience, 2 symphony performances per program, as well as storytelling and crafts. It is jam packed with experiences for all ages. This year we also had the opportunity to hold two symphony programs in the branches and they were so success-ful we are looking forward to expanding that to more branches in 2020. Literature Live! 19 programs with 1,263 attendees With glow in the dark scenery and dancing beans, this summer’s puppetshow was a smash hit with children and parents alike! The Literature Live puppeteers substantially reworked their script and scenery while using their classic puppets and came up with one of their best puppetshows ever. We can’t wait to see what they do next. “We have loved the literature live for years. They are always A plus, this year’s summer show was no different!” “It was great. Enjoyed the spin and broken toe, and my niece enjoyed the part where the mother rescues the giant. Very cute!” “I loved the show. It was fun. Everyone was having a good time.” “This was the best puppet show yet loved the set and story telling. It was an excellent show kids loved it. You came up with a very clever variation.” Programs for tweens (9-12) 80 programs with 1,593 attendees Galaxy Art Program Chibi Program Comment Card Michael Albert Pop Art: "Super fun and creative event. Our whole family enjoyed it. Thank you." Galaxy Art: “My granddaughter, 8 year old, had a lot of fun painting in the art class. It’s a program that combines the science, i.e., the “Solar System” and the art together and makes the subjects interesting to the young kids. We appreciate the program like this that enhances the community service. Thanks for the good work!” We really expanded our Tween programs this year and got a fantastic response from the public. Programs were almost completely created and ran by staff members. We held a series of Science Art programs including Galaxy Bracelets, UV Resin Jewelry, and Glow in the Dark Art. We held Percy Jackson Parties, Fortnite Parties, and sewed fantastic felt creatures while we watched movies. There were also artists in residence doing fiber art and visiting artists doing pop art. All that and more! Programs for Teens 16 programs with 280 attendees Stranger Things themed Escape Room Program We worked closely with our Teen Councils this year to develop programming that reflected things they wanted to learn, experience, and participate in. This resulted in amazingly diverse programming that appealed to a variety of teens. This year we held K-Pop Dance Parties, Silent Raves, Escape Rooms, 3D printing, APL Studios (a series for filming and editing video), a Twitch Lab, and a cooking program! A Staff member on APL Studios: At the end of the program, two teens stayed behind to talk about their writing project. One girl was very excited that the vast majority of attendees were girls. "I hope this means that the future of film has more girls like us." Twitch Lab: "I really like how the presenters build community and relationships online.” And now for books!
