What is housed on 4th street in businesses like Coconut Club, Oilcan Harry’s, and Neon Grotto are more than just clubs - it is a safe haven for our community. Part of what makes Austin home for so many of us in the LGBTIA+ community who call Texas home, is it has always been a city where we feel more held in our community. We may still have a long way to go, but I can promise you that taking away safe spaces like Coconut Club, Oilcan Harry’s, and Neon Grotto is not the way to continue to build our community up. Austin used to be a city that prided itself in the preservation of local businesses, community, local art - and even proudly holds the slogan “Keep Austin Weird” based off of the judgements we have received from other Texas cities for being a safe space that allows our community to be authentically loving themselves. I, for one, want to stay in a city where we still hold these beliefs. Because of that, I cannot support the demolition of these places just to build more “luxury high rises,” that are surely not going to be accessible in price. Thank you for taking the time to hear your locals out, and we hope you find it in your heart to hear us out! via being recorded by email. You can reach me by phone at     As a queer Latinx person born and raised in Austin, it has been personally devastating to see the city attack both low-income latinx communities on the East side through environmental racism, and then the threat of tearing down one of our only public areas to share space with queer folks in Austin, particularly with the demolition of Neon Grotto and Coconut Club which have been havens for queer femme folks particularly in Austin’s nightlife. I hope the council will do right by community and reject the request to demolish any of this strip of 4th.     This feels like an additional attack on top of Governor Abbott’s assault on trans youth in the state. Hearing This message is from Jessica Kirkham.    I would like to express my disapproval of item A1 on the agenda for the May 4th City Hall hearing. The demolition of  Coconut Club, Neon Grotto, and Oilcan Harry’s would damage the LGBTQ+ community’s presence in Austin and remove  vital spaces for community members to thrive.   1 Allen, Amber From: Sent: To: Subject: Emily McCue Friday, April 15, 2022 8:36 AM PAZ Preservation Item A1 *** External Email ‐ Exercise Caution ***    Hello,    I am writing to share my strong opposition to Item A1. We should be doing everything we can to maintain the small  areas of the “old” Austin that are left. Our city needs safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ people. Displacing these establishments  like Oilcan Harry’s is not good for the community. Building more high rises benefits no one other than the über wealthy.    Austin should be a city where more than just rich people can enjoy life and culture. If we commit to removing all of our  culture, then why would anyone want to live here? Like many other Austinites, I am already devastated by the sweeping  changes we have seen to our city in the last few years. Please consider what you can do to preserve a small piece of  Austin. Do not go through with passing Item A1 and allowing these safe spaces to be lost. Do what your job is meant to  do and help maintain a piece of Austin history.    Sincerely,    Emily I’m an Austin resident who STRONGLY opposes the demolition of the bars on 4th street re:A1.    By allowing a developer to demolish those bars, the city of Austin is sending the message that it cares more about dumb  developers and ugly expensive high rises than the history, the LGBTQIA+ community and its safe spaces, and keeping  literally anything old from this city. It seems like all Austin wants to do is erase itself and build new lifeless buildings that  most people can not even afford.     Yes, we’ve heard that the developers will allow a couple of the bars to return to new locations at a supposedly  “discounted rate.” But what would happen to them in the mean time? We like our old buildings.. they have character,  memories, history, and LIFE.
