Allen, Amber From: Sent: To: Subject: Patrick Pinnell Monday, April 18, 2022 3:18 PM PAZ Preservation May 4th, Item A1 *** External Email - Exercise Caution *** Please relay my comment to the HLC on item A1 at the May 4th, 2022 meeting.    Name: Patrick Pinnell  Residence: Austin, TX ‐ 78745      Comment:  There are so few LGBT+ spaces in Austin that losing OCH (Oil Can Harry's) is unthinkable. This is effectively tearing out  the heart of what we all think of as the 'gay district' in Austin. Doing so mere months after FINALLY recognizing this  space with a plaque and some (very nice) rainbow crosswalks is a face slap to the entire LGBT+ community of Austin.  This city has a culture of inclusion and is seen as the one city in Texas where anyone can live regardless of color, creed or  belief. Any action to diminish or uproot the very small LGBT+ space acts against our beloved city's identity. Thank you.      CAUTION: This email was received at the City of Austin, from an EXTERNAL source. You can reach me by phone at     The following quote was taken directly from austintexas.gov (https://www.austintexas.gov/page/imagine-austin- vision):    “Austin is its people. Our city is home to engaged, compassionate, creative, and independent thinking people, where diversity is a source of strength and where we have the opportunity to fully participate and fulfill our potential.”    As a bisexual woman, I’ve felt so accepted and free to explore and define my queerness in Austin, and that isn’t something I’ve truly felt anywhere else in Texas. Diversity absolutely is a strength of this city, but if Item A1 is supported that wouldn’t be true anymore. Queer spaces like Coconut Club, Neon Grotto, Oilcan Harry’s, and Rain are cornerstones of Austin’s LGBTQIA+ community and allow the members of that community “the opportunity to fully participate and fulfill [their] potential” as mentioned in the previous quote.    As proudly mentioned on our city’s website, “Austin is its people.” The demolition of such a sacred LGBTQIA+ place would serve a devastating blow to Austin and its vibrant culture, as it would strip a large Austin community of one of its most prominent spaces. High-rises can be built anywhere, so why should a marginalized community have to lose part of their culture and home for the sake of this one?    Please respond as soon as possible with next steps and additional information.    Thank you very much!    Bailey Poindexter  ‐‐   Bailey Poindexter  CAUTION: This email was received at the City of Austin, from an EXTERNAL source. I'm reaching out in response to The Hanover Co's demolition request of the 4th street block between Colorado and Lavaca.    I am STRONGLY AGAINST Item A1 and want my comment made public on May 4th via email comment below:     In 2019 a gay couple suffered a hate crime downtown. Immediately afterwards the LGBTQIA community rallied together and set out to march the streets and let people know that we will not be in the closet. That their hatred and fear are not a deterrent to us living our lives. 4th street provided a safe space for us to rally before the march. It gave us the meeting spot we needed to hear from people from the community. To hear from the victims of that crime. A place for people to make signs and see one another as a larger community. This isn’t the first time I’ve gathered at 4th street after a hate crime. In 2016 after the Pulse night club shooting, 4th street provided a gathering place for us to come together and mourn. We NEED an area like this. Having a place to gather, to be our authentic selves, to see one another, is critical. Demolishing our queer spaces for some sterile development project will have a huge negative impact on the LGBTQIA community. Please oppose this proposed development and preserve this safe space for the queer people of this city. Thank you, Nik Sturm   CAUTION: This email was received at the City of Austin, from an EXTERNAL source. Please use caution when clicking links or opening attachments.
