Allen, Amber From: Sent: To: Subject: Patrick Pinnell Monday, April 18, 2022 3:18 PM PAZ Preservation May 4th, Item A1 *** External Email - Exercise Caution *** Please relay my comment to the HLC on item A1 at the May 4th, 2022 meeting. Name: Patrick Pinnell Residence: Austin, TX ‐ 78745 Comment: There are so few LGBT+ spaces in Austin that losing OCH (Oil Can Harry's) is unthinkable. This is effectively tearing out the heart of what we all think of as the 'gay district' in Austin. Doing so mere months after FINALLY recognizing this space with a plaque and some (very nice) rainbow crosswalks is a face slap to the entire LGBT+ community of Austin. This city has a culture of inclusion and is seen as the one city in Texas where anyone can live regardless of color, creed or belief. Any action to diminish or uproot the very small LGBT+ space acts against our beloved city's identity. Thank you. CAUTION: This email was received at the City of Austin, from an EXTERNAL source. You can reach me by email at At what point do we decide we have given up enough of what made Austin a special, desirable place to live? How much more of uniqueness and history must we see deleted in favor of characterless structures found anywhere else in the country and the world? Even if non‐members of the LGBTQ community should be against this demolition, we cannot displace another of our communities in favor of overpriced, sterile buildings. I am STRONGLY AGAINST Item A1 and would like my comment to be made public on May 4th recorded by email if possible. You can reach me by phone at The following quote was taken directly from austintexas.gov (https://www.austintexas.gov/page/imagine-austin- vision): “Austin is its people. Our city is home to engaged, compassionate, creative, and independent thinking people, where diversity is a source of strength and where we have the opportunity to fully participate and fulfill our potential.” As a bisexual woman, I’ve felt so accepted and free to explore and define my queerness in Austin, and that isn’t something I’ve truly felt anywhere else in Texas. Diversity absolutely is a strength of this city, but if Item A1 is supported that wouldn’t be true anymore. Queer spaces like Coconut Club, Neon Grotto, Oilcan Harry’s, and Rain are cornerstones of Austin’s LGBTQIA+ community and allow the members of that community “the opportunity to fully participate and fulfill [their] potential” as mentioned in the previous quote. As proudly mentioned on our city’s website, “Austin is its people.” The demolition of such a sacred LGBTQIA+ place would serve a devastating blow to Austin and its vibrant culture, as it would strip a large Austin community of one of its most prominent spaces. High-rises can be built anywhere, so why should a marginalized community have to lose part of their culture and home for the sake of this one? Please respond as soon as possible with next steps and additional information. Thank you very much! I am a gay man living in this state. Austin….4th ST is one of the only safe havens I have in this state. It is one of the only places I feel safe and accepted. You are certainly not doing anything in your power to try to make life easier for any LGBTQ citizen living in your state. This will only make our lives harder. Please stop making our lives more difficult than they need to be. Most of us moved away from our uber conservative hometowns to find a place where we could be free to live as ourselves and fall in love with whomever we want and be who we want to be. Nobody is trying to make our lives easier. Everyday new legislation pops up that tries to take away more of our rights, more of our opportunities, and now you are trying to take more of our safe spaces. We don’t have that many. We have one street in one city where we feel like we can be ourselves, and that’s too much for you all to handle? Stop. Please. Build your high rise on another street. Take over a straight bar. Please do not take some of the few spaces we have in this state to feel comfortable. You’ve already taken so much. You’ve given us so little. We deserve to be able to keep this. We deserve more than a street. If we cannot have more, please do not keep making us accept less and expecting us to stay loyal citizens. Everyday it becomes clearer and clearer that there is a great divide in our state between progressives and conservatives. Everyday it becomes clearer and clearer that each new generation becomes more and more progressive. There is nothing you can do to stop that. Progression is not a bad thing. Progress is not a bad thing. The fact that there are so many people in power that try to belittle and make fun of something called “Progressive,” the more evil you all look. You are fighting progress on a regular basis and trying to be championed for it. You are losing. Please realize that loss does not mean that you can stop trying to keep your values alive. It just means they need to be adjusted. Not changed; adjusted. They can’t continue to force them down everyone’s throats. It. Has. Never. Worked. You know what does? Being kind, polite, and accepting. People will flock to those people. If you have a message you’re trying to deliver, stop trying to condemn those you want to pull in. And stop demolishing structures where we feel safe from you. Please. Below is my statement I wish to be submitted to the commission: “My name is Texas Lamar and I am a lifelong Central Texan. I am writing in support of historic designation for the 4th street block between Colorado and Lavaca. I am a proud member of the Austin LGBTQ+ community. I have been a 4th street patron since about 2015. If the city of Austin chooses to allow the building of a high rise on top of Oil Can Harry’s, they will be effectively telling a significant portion of the local LGBTQ+ community that they do not care about them, their history, or their culture. These bars have been a safe space for queer and trans Austinites and visitors to build community and celebrate their culture for decades. Many members of our community do not feel safe experiencing nightlife in almost any other part of town due to discrimination and sometimes targeted violence. While addressing these incidences of bigotry is an equally pressing issue, the city of Austin has the opportunity right now to ensure the legacy of these bars on 4th street. The 1969 Stonewall Revolution, the spark for the modern day LGBTQ+ rights movement, was started outside of a gay bar in New York City. Queer and trans Americans went to bars like the Stonewall Inn to escape fear and judgement and to be in community. Thankfully, modern gay bars, like Oil Can Harry’s, are now more often a place to celebrate our LGBTQ+ identities. Please contribute to this history of LGBTQ+ spaces in nightlife by designating this area a historic landmark. Thank you.” Best, Texas Lamar CAUTION: This email was received at the City of Austin, from an EXTERNAL source. Please use caution when clicking links or opening attachments. I am STRONGLY AGAINST Item A1 and want my comment made public on May 4th via email comment below: In 2019 a gay couple suffered a hate crime downtown. Immediately afterwards the LGBTQIA community rallied together and set out to march the streets and let people know that we will not be in the closet. That their hatred and fear are not a deterrent to us living our lives. 4th street provided a safe space for us to rally before the march. It gave us the meeting spot we needed to hear from people from the community. To hear from the victims of that crime. A place for people to make signs and see one another as a larger community. This isn’t the first time I’ve gathered at 4th street after a hate crime. In 2016 after the Pulse night club shooting, 4th street provided a gathering place for us to come together and mourn. We NEED an area like this. Having a place to gather, to be our authentic selves, to see one another, is critical. Demolishing our queer spaces for some sterile development project will have a huge negative impact on the LGBTQIA community. Please oppose this proposed development and preserve this safe space for the queer people of this city. I am STRONGLY AGAINST item A1 and want my comment made public on May 4th and recorded via email. You can reach me by phone at Demolition of 4th street would contribute to the continued marginalization of the queer community here in Austin. This is an area of community, security, celebration, and love and should not be destroyed and replaced with development(s) that cater to Austin’s wealthiest and predominantly white citizens who contribute nothing to the culture of 4th street. Governor Abbott and conservative Texas legislators are already attacking the queer community, and more recently trans youth. This population needs safe spaces to live, work, and thrive. I am STRONGLY AGAINST Item A1 and want my comment made public on May 4th RECORDED BY EMAIL. You can reach me by email at As a ten year resident of this city, I’ve seen many decisions passed by this body with little regard for preserving safe spaces for our more vulnerable citizens and visitors. Our LGBTQIA+ friends and neighbors have enjoyed the fun and mostly safe spaces along 4th street for decades and they continue to need that space into the future. Our city has a chance to make a good decision to protect this corridor both for humanity and historic preservation to honor all the sacrifices and celebrations that this community will always be worthy of. Stand up for your friends and neighbors! This is a time to be strong for others that NEED your help, in the face of the state legislature who continuously attacks this community and passes unconstitutional laws with the pure intent to make hate grow. You don’t have to water that hate garden, you can let it dry out and turn to dust. Thank you for your time and consideration. You can reach me by phone at Demolishing this vibrant and historic street for yet another ugly, boring, generic and so called “luxury” development project would be an absolute tragic loss for Austin. I lived in Austin 10 years ago, and I know much has changed since then, but I remember 4th street fondly and destroying such a unique and safe space for the LGBTQ community is absolutely egregious. There is plenty of new development everywhere else in the city ‐ please do not demolish the 4th gay bars!!!
