I was a barber for three years in the state of Georgia, and I drove tractor-trailers for 31 years. I didn’t know I had heart problems until one night training at the fire station, I collapsed and was diagnosed with a collapsed artery on my left side. I’ve had trouble for years, been to six or seven different hospitals with blood clotting. I came here to Austin from Georgia seeking work, and I was driving until I had a heart attack. My boss took me to the hospital, and that’s when I learned I needed a pacemaker. While I was in the hospital, I lost my income and had nowhere to go. I was introduced to Ms. Lauren from Central Health, who told me to be at New Entry at 11 o’clock. From there, my journey of healing started. So many people helped me—Dr. Farmer, Ms. Yahan, Ms. Amy, Ms. Cece, Mr. Reese, Mr. Dustin, Mr. Ahmad, Jasmine, and others. They stood by me and made sure I was okay. They kept telling me, “Don’t worry.” They helped me apply for disability and walked me through the process. I call it a recipe—when you’ve got the right ingredients, it comes together. I’m a living example. I was worried about a place to stay—I was homeless. But Central Health helped me, found me housing, and connected me with care. I’m still under doctor’s care, but now I’ve been interviewed for permanent housing. This is my new beginning. My journey is not over—I’ve got to keep going. Thank you
