AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICE OF COMMUNITY LIAISON UNIT OVERVIEW • What is the Office of Community Liaison (OCL)? • What services/programs we offer • Our roles within our communities • Questions APD Office of Community Liaison OFFICE OF COMMUNITY LIAISON UNIT The Office of Community Liaison (OCL) is a unit within the Austin Police Department (APD). It is staffed with APD civilian employees who partner with our officers to provide education, resources, and build positive community relationships in order to bridge the gap between the officers and community members. APD Office of Community Liaison OFFICE OF COMMUNITY LIAISON COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND SERVICES Initiate. Conversations, ideas, civic participation Collaborate. Community events, listening sessions, coalitions Education. Breaking stigma, accessibility to resources • Host and attend educational and safety fairs throughout the community. • Participate in town hall and neighborhood meetings. • Collaborate on projects with District Representative Officers (DR) and other community groups. • Provide educational information and resources to local, state, and federal organizations. APD Office of Community Liaison CRIME PREVENTION OUTREACH Deterring crime in residential and commercial properties by performing security assessments. Completing assessments will identify potential vulnerabilities and educate the community. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT • OCL hosts National Night Out (NNO) which is an event that promotes crime prevention and the opportunity for neighbors to get to know one another. • Multi-agency partnerships for NNO annual event. • Over 400 parties throughout the Central Texas area. OPERATION BLUE SANTA Provides gifts to families and their children that are in need during the holidays. • Founded in 1972. • 501(c)3 non-profit, community-based organization. • Serves over 5,000 families each year. ASIAN AMERICAN OUTREACH • Addresses public safety stigmas within the Asian American community to build trust and understanding. • Engages in culturally relevant conversations relating to the Asian American community in Austin. • Collaborates with Asian American Quality of Life Advisory Commission and other community task force groups that serve the Asian American community. SENIORS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT TOGETHER S.A.L.T. • Provides awareness and education to seniors on scam prevention tips and public safety. • Hosts and attends local events for senior communities. • Collaborates with national and community stakeholders. • Hosts the annual S.A.L.T Fair. LGBTQI+ OUTREACH • Collaborates with City of Austin LGBTQI+ Quality of Life Advisory Commission. • Provides educational outreach and resources to community members. • Fosters conversations between LGBTQI+ community and APD. • Participates in Pride Month parade (June and August). SAFE PLACE PROGRAM • Free and voluntary partnership with businesses and other non-profit agencies that serve as a critical role in victim assistance and hate crime reporting. • Designation of all in-use city recreation centers and public libraries as participants in the Safe Place program (Resolution 20230518-046). • Over 159 community partnerships in Austin. REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT OUTREACH • Collaborates with the Consulate General of Mexico, Austin and Consulate General of Ireland, Austin. • Educates the community on local law enforcement to promote awareness. • Fosters trust and rapport between APD and Hispanic/Latino community. • Promotes awareness of impending laws and/or policies that may affect the community (SB4).
