BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION Commission on Aging Recommendation Number: 20260909-010: Home Care Aide Day – November 18 WHEREAS, home care aides provide essential hands-on assistance that enables older adults and people with disabilities to live safely and independently in their homes and communities; and WHEREAS, home care aides assist individuals with activities of daily living and provide companionship, personal care, and other supports that contribute to health, dignity, safety, and quality of life; and WHEREAS, the 2025 Austin Older Adult Quality of Life Study recommends that the City “explore systemic supports for caregivers to balance caregiving responsibilities with paid employment” 1 and improve caregiver supports; and WHEREAS, the Austin Older Adult Quality of Life Study also reports that “most older adult caregivers are working full-time,” 2 illustrating the importance of a strong network of paid care professionals and community supports; and WHEREAS, recognizing and supporting the direct care workforce is increasingly important as the number of older adults in Austin and Central Texas continues to grow 3. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Commission on Aging encourages the Austin City Council to recognize November 18, 2026, as "Home Care Aide Day" in Austin and to honor home care aides for their essential contributions to the health, independence, dignity, and quality of life of older adults and people with disabilities.
