ITEM09/1-LATE BACKUP-SUPP ITEM09/2-LATE BACKUP-SUPP ITEM09/3-LATE BACKUP-SUPP Date: October 7, 2026 To: City of Austin Board of Adjustment Subject: Support for Variance Request – 1703 Pasadena Drive (Case No. C15-2026-0040) To the Board of Adjustment, I’m writing to share my full support for the variance request for 1703 Pasadena Drive (Case No. C15-2026-0040) to enclose their existing garage space and install a garage door. As a neighbor, this project makes total sense for the property. Enclosed garages are already standard throughout our neighborhood, so adding a door here fits right in with the look and feel of Pasadena Drive. Since they're just enclosing the space that's already there, it won't change the footprint of the house or impact neighboring yards, light, or privacy at all. Having a fully enclosed garage will also give the homeowners a much safer, protected spot to store their cars and belongings out of sight and out of the weather. It's a very reasonable residential upgrade that keeps the character of our street intact. I strongly encourage the Board to approve this request at the October 12 meeting. As a neighbor, I believe the request is reasonable, modest, and consistent with our neighborhood, and I respectfully ask the Board to approve it. An enclosed garage would protect the owners' vehicles and belongings from theft and weather. Enclosed garages are also common on Pasadena Drive and throughout the surrounding neighborhood, so this change would be consistent with the area's residential character and scale which we are working hard to maintain. The request involves enclosing an existing space, not building a new one. The building's footprint would remain the same, with no additional impact on neighboring yards, light, air, or privacy. As an enclosed garage is a customary residential amenity, this would maintain the property's residential use and character. For these reasons, I urge the Board to approve the variance. Thank you for your time and consideration. Second Street Austin, Texas 78701 To Whom It May Concern, I am writing in support of the land development code variance request filed by my neighbors at 1703 Pasadena Drive, Case No. C15-2026-0040. My family has lived at 1704 Pasadena Drive since 2007, and we watched every step of the construction of this house from our vantage point across the street – from the demolition of the previous home on the lot to the arrival of our new neighbors. As the construction neared completion, I was shocked and confused to see the builders tear out an already finished wall on the west side of the garage, only to replace it with what appeared to be a screen built out of wooden fencing. I couldn’t imagine how it would feel as the new owners of such a lovely new home to be told that my garage was now going to open to the elements, drastically limiting how it could be used. I now understand that this change was required to comply with the residential design and compatibility standards, but this is one of those situations where complying with the letter of the law has unintended consequences that are arguably worse than the potential violation. As it stands, the current situation is not only an inconvenience to the homeowners, but it creates greater inconsistency with the existing residential character of the neighborhood. I believe it also decreases security for every home in our immediate area by presenting a more attractive target for thieves than a fully enclosed garage. Enclosing the space is a limited change that would have a positive visual impact on the exterior of the house. Please register our household’s support for this variance. Sincerely, Paul Grotevant
