Fiscal Year 2026 February 2026 Updates and Upcoming Events March 22, 2026 Who Let the Dogs Out On March 22, Borracho Pro is bringing the action to the shelter for a special charity wrestling event benefiting Austin Animal Services! This event helps raise critical resources to support the animals in our care.  Adoptable dogs and cats onsite  Shelter tours + ways to get involved  Admission is donation-based! Bring in wish-list items or donate directly — every contribution goes to helping the animals!! Come for the wrestling. Stay for the animals. March 11, 2026 Upcoming Closure On March 11, Austin Animal Services will be closed for a day of sta(cid:431) development and training. Sta(cid:431) training is essential to successful and safe shelter operations in alignment with Austin Animal Services’ Five-Year Strategic Plan, the Sta(cid:431) and Volunteer priority, Goal 1, Strategy A and D. This month’s training will be focused on safety including CPR, Stop the Bleed, First Aid, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) trainings. The public will be informed of the closure through multiple channels, including:  The Austin Animal Services website  3-1-1  A media release  Social media platforms  Advance and day-of signage posted on campus Emergency field services will remain available throughout the closure and normal operations will resume on March 12, 2026. § 3-1-27 - Reporting by Animal Shelter (1) Number of impounded animals 35, Wildlife 2 Guinea 66 Kittens 159 Puppies 1 Reptile Fowl Rabbit Bird 289 Cats 266 Dogs Cat Dog Puppy Kitten Wildlife 823 Intakes February 2026 (FY26) saw 788 domestic animals impounded at AAS. There was an 11.46% increase from January 2026 which brought in 707 domestic animals to the shelter. This number excludes the categories of wildlife, bird (wildlife), opossums, and reptile (wildlife). (3) Live-release rate for non-wildlife animals (4) Animals adopted (5) Animals returned to owner February 2026 (FY26) saw 76 animals reclaimed. Animal Protection O(cid:352)icers (APOs) returned 2 animals to their owners in the field. (6) Animals in foster care in the month and on day of reporting 308 di(cid:352)erent people/families fostered. As of March 4, there are 229 animals in foster care. In the month of February, 13 animals were a part of the Finder to Foster Program. 58 animals were adopted directly from foster care. 104 new foster applications were processed. There are currently 791 members (approved foster care providers) in the foster program’s GivePulse group. We completed a membership cleanup in February, so all current members are actively fostering or have indicated that they plan to foster within the next 12 months. (7) Vaccination numbers upon intake There were 917 administered vaccinations for the month of February. (8) Money paid for emergency treatment to third-party providers The invoice for services has not yet been provided to Austin Animal Services from the Emergency Clinic (EC) for the month of February. The most recent invoice for services rendered amounted to $10,818.89 in January 2026. Among the 184 domestic animals, 17 animals were transferred for medical reasons to rescue partners. 33 were transferred to Austin Humane Society for SNR/TNR. 68 were transferred to assist with capacity challenges. (12) Animals lost, stolen, or missing No animals were reported as lost, stolen, or missing in February at AAS. (13) Live release rate goal Austin City Council Resolution No. 20190328-034 states that Austin Animal Services has a mandated live-release rate of 90% and a goal of 95% or greater. (14) Cats released under SNR/TNR There were 33 cats transferred from AAS to Austin Humane Society with the Community Cats Shelter Neuter Return (SNR) program. (15) Intact animals adopted or RTO No animals were adopted intact. Additional Reporting Animal Protection  O(cid:352)icers submi(cid:355)ed 32 specimens for rabies testing out of 233 exposure reports. We had 1 positive bat.  O(cid:352)icers handed out 0 fencing assistance applications and implanted 0 microchip(s).  O(cid:352)icers impounded approximately 318 animals. Wildlife Protection  There were 54 total coyote related activities (Behavior types include Sighting, Encounter, Incident, and Observation. “Observation” is defined as hearing coyotes howling and finding scat or footprints.) o 24 sightings, 17 wild sick, 1 encounters, 2 wild injured, 3 wild speak, 3 incident, and 4 observation. Volunteer Program In February, 427 volunteers contributed 5,280 hours   4 orientations, introducing 95 potential volunteers   85 volunteers dedicated their time to volunteer development and onboarding training 14 Community Service Restitution individuals to perform 105 hours Cat Cleaning, Care, and Enrichment 777.38 hours Dog Walking, Care, and Enrichment Community Cats 2,375.94 hours 534.58 hours Marketing Austin Animal Services Facebook had 605,000 page views, reached 188,000 unique individuals, and got 13,000 content interactions. Austin Animal Services Instagram had 661,000 page views, reached 113,000 unique individuals, and got 31,000 content interactions during February.
