May 2024 Animal Services Report May 2024 AUSTIN ANIMAL SERVICES REPORT Animal Services News The live outcome rate for May was 95.70%. A total of 1,439 animals were brought to the shelter which included 888 cats, 509 dogs, 14 wild animals, 7 birds, 10 guinea pigs, 8 rabbits, and 2 ferrets. A total of 546 animals were adopted (155 adult dogs, 138 puppies, 141 kittens, and 112 adult cats). A total of 80 dogs and cats were returned to their owners (RTOs and RTO-Adopt). On May 1, there were 993 dogs and cats within the ASO inventory (519 onsite, 470 in foster, and 2 at a vet clinic On June 1, there were 1,367 dogs and cats within the ASO inventory (705 onsite, 660 in foster, and 4 at a vet and 1 at Austin Pets Alive!). clinic and 1 at Austin Pets Alive!). Animal Protection Animal Protection Officers (APOs) returned 42 animals to their owners in the field. Officers handed out 23 fencing assistance applications and implanted 7 microchip(s). Officers impounded 208 injured animals and delivered approximately 146 wildlife animals to Austin Wildlife Rescue. Officers entered 280 rabies exposure reports and submitted 17 specimens for rabies testing. We had 3 rabies positive bats, 1 rabies positive fox and 1 decomposed bat. 70 total coyote related activities o 33 Wild Sick o 1 Wild Speak o 1 Wild Injured o 28 Sightings o 3 o 3 Encounters Incidents Out of 70 coyote related reports, 35 reports fell within the reported behavior types. Behavior types include Sighting, Encounter, Incident, and Observation. “Observation” is defined as hearing coyotes howling and finding scat or footprints. o Encounters: Pets were a factor in 1/3 (33%) of encounters reported. An encounter involved a coyote “coming at caller aggressively”. Unable to contact caller. An encounter involved a person reporting and putting nothing in the memo. Unable to contact caller. An encounter involved two coyotes following caller and pet. o Incidents: Pets were a factor in 2/3 (67%) of incidents reported. An incident involved a coyote taking an unsupervised chihuahua. An incident involved a coyote biting a dog who ran up to the coyote in the greenbelt. An incident involved a coyote biting a 35-pound dog. May 2024 Animal Services Report Out of 70 related activities, 35 fell within the reported behavior types (wild sick, wild speak, and wild injured). There was 159% increase in reports from May 2023 to May 2024. There was an 21% increase from April 2024 to May 2024. Volunteer A total of 457 volunteers donated 5,030 hours of volunteer service. 38 individuals donated 76 hours toward group volunteer service, through dog-walking and general cat care. The Volunteer Program held 4 orientations, introducing 92 potential volunteers to shelter operations. The Volunteer Program scheduled 20 Community Service Restitution individuals to perform 209 hours of laundry, dishes and other duties as assigned. 176 volunteers spent 499 hours on volunteer development and training. Foster & Rescue 128 animals were adopted directly from foster care. More than 370 different people/families fostered. 242 new foster applications were processed. (This number does not necessarily include walk-in / in person applications that were processed.) There are currently 1000 members (approved fosters) in the foster program’s GivePulse group. (We did a membership clean up in January. Everyone that is currently in the group indicated that they wished to remain active and plan to foster a pet within the next 12 months.) 2 pet(s) died or were euthanized in foster care in May (based on the reports that are available to us). As of June 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. there are 659 animals in foster care. Vet Services AAC vets performed 894 exams. AAC vets spayed/neutered 446 animals. 0 visibly pregnant animals were spayed. 99 emergency cases were treated at AAC. 81 emergencies were transferred from the emergency clinic. The estimated emergency clinic bill for May is $32,000. 4 animals received orthopedic surgeries. 8 animals received other specialty surgeries (enucleations, amputations, mass removals, hernia repair, wound repairs, laparotomies, entropion, dentals, etc.). 4 cruelty case(s) were treated. 271 animals were pulled by Austin Pets Alive! for medical reasons (38 medical urgent, 19 medical attention, 168 neonatal, 8 pregnant, 19 parvo/panleuk). APA pulled 3 large dogs and 6 small dogs and 0 cats for behavior in May.
