As a follow up regarding OANA’s request about the use of the $18,500 of mitigation funds, i.e.: • That these funds be used within a year of being received to plant native trees in the esplanade where needed along the West 12th Street between West Avenue and Colorado Street. I’ve had positive conversations about this today with Andrew Smiley of Tree Folks and Dave Anderson representing the applicant. If Naomi and Caitlan are agreeable and planting trees in the West 12th Street esplanade is approved by the city, just for your info, Tree Folks is willing to work with city staff to accomplish this project. We’re aware that part of the process of deciding where tree mitigate funds are spent is accessing which are the more ‘tree canopy deficient’ areas of town. However, OANA interests are the tree canopy within its neighborhood. And, therefore requests that these mitigation funds be spent on W 12th Street, most directly replacing the tree canopy that is being removed on W 11th Street. We ask for the applicant and staff to support of this request. Please let me know if you have any questions. The Planning Commission meeting on this variance is scheduled for one week from today, Sept 27th. In my experience this is very short notice and I request a postponement until the next planning committee meeting after Sept 27th, so our neighborhood association can consider its position. Does your office support this variance? While OANA supports increased density in our neighborhood and has conditionally supported the proposed project, we generally do not support the removal of heritage trees. If it is easier to discuss this by phone, please call. Box 1088 Austin, Texas 78767 Dear City of Austin: This letter is submitted on behalf of the Old Austin Neighborhood Association (“OANA”) regarding the variance request to remove the 32” Heritage Live Oak tree at 812 West 11th Street, as well as the proposed mitigation for its removal. Regarding the removal itself, the board after considerable discussion at its meeting yesterday voted to take no position on this request. In addition, the board takes no position of the proposed mitigation of the planting two 5” live oak trees on the property. However, regarding the proposed $18,500 in tree planning mitigation funds, the OANA board makes the following request: - That these funds be used within a year of being received to plant native trees in the esplanade where needed along the West 12th Street between West Avenue and Colorado Street. West 12th Street is the entrance to the Capitol of Texas. Adding trees in its esplanade and making other Improvements to its associated right-of-way is a high priority goal of OANA. And, if done, will be a benefit to the neighborhood as well as all who used this street.
