COA / AISD INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT CONTRACTS AND CONCESSIONS COMMITEE SEPTEMBER 20, 2024 PRESENTED BY: MICHELLE ROJAS EMMA S. BARRIENTOS MEXICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS academia cuauhtli BACKGROUND Academia Cuauhtli is a language and culture revitalization program for children of historically marginalized populations most at risk of culture erasure. It provides custom made culturally sustaining TEKS aligned curriculum delivered by expert dual language teachers with lived experiences. COMMUNITY SERVED PROGRAM PARTIPANT DEMOGRAPHICS Elementary to middle school aged youth attending AISD schools of which 90% includes as Latino/a/e/x and identify newcomer populations PROGRAM SPECIALTY Founded 10 years ago to address a lack in available diverse and culturally representative curriculum, students flourish in Academia Cuauhtli’s Saturday Academy and summer camp programs. Youth explore their cultural identity and Indigenous ancestral roots as artists, scientists, and mathematicians via the visual and performance arts, bilingual language studies, and STEM. CHALLENGE Although bilingual students are amongst the highest student populations in Texas public is still not anywhere near schools, there enough culturally relevant curriculum. 97% EMERGENT BILINGUAL FY 2023 ACADEMIA CUAUHTLI PROGRAM AISD STUDENT DEMOGRAPHIC DATA an unparalled partnership resulting in transformational education AISD ACADEMIA CUAUHTLI CITY OF AUSTIN / EMMA S. BARRIENTOS MEXICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER three key stakeholders STAKEHOLDER PARTNERSHIP GOALS Continue this mutual partnership started 5 years ago under a now expiring ILA GOAL 2 Continue to support dual language literacy of Latino/a/e/x youth of the City of Austin GOAL 1 GOAL 3 Continue to be a leading exemplary partnership model in education that preserves and honors the cultural identity of students contract terms & conditions ACADEMIA CUAuhTLI will provide: Academia Cuauhtli will provide culturally relevant curriculum encompassing art, culture, and history to students in their Saturday and summer camp programs. CITY OF AUSTIN / EMMA S. BARRIENTOS MEXICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER will provide: Establish a one-year term with five additional 12-month renewal options. As budget allows, the support of a full-time coordinator position and funding for supplies, field trips, and food for program participants. AISD will provide: As budget allows, access to space to host the Saturday Academy and summer camp programs, bus transportation to and from the program(s) host site(s), custodial services, and food for program participants. The CCC recommend to the Parks Board that the Parks Board recommend to City Council the negotiation and execution of an Interlocal Agreement with AISD.
