He creates work that honors the Black Radical tradition of resistance using paint, photography, sound, and sculpture. Sherrard is also an alumnus of the School for Poetic Computation. taylor barnes (b. 1993) is native of Austin, Texas. She is a ceramic, charcoal, and fibers artist who explores spirituality, oral history, materiality, and bell hooks' philosophy of object and subject. She received her MFA from the University of North Texas. The artist chooses to honor her linage by not capitalizing the letters of her name. Nitashia Johnson, is a multimedia artist and educator from Dallas, Texas. She is an alumna of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Texas Woman's University (BFA), and the Rhode Island School of Design (MAT). She received her MFA from the University of Texas at Dallas. Her work seeks to help us reconnect to our natural environment to build an understanding of our personal histories and lived experiences. Juneteenth 2024 S T A Y B L A C K & L I V E A U S T I N C I T Y W I D E J U N E T E E N T H F E S T I V A L J U N E 1 5 , 2 0 2 4 - J U N E 1 9 , 2 0 2 4 The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Cener in partnership with Carver ATX Foundation STAY BLACK JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL HISTORY In response to the ongoing global health crisis and endemic violence experienced by Black and Brown people, in 2020—the Carver Museum and Six Square joined forces to create Stay Black and Live. The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center, will host the 5th annual Stay Black and Live (SB&L) Juneteenth Festival. What started as a livestream has now become a fixture of Austin’s Citywide Juneteenth celebrations. This year's weeklong festival runs from June 15 -19, 2024. H E A D L I N E R S , S A T U R D A Y , J U N E 1 5 , 2 0 2 4 Co-Headliners Tanks & the Bangas Tank and the Bangas, a New Orleans-based band, infuse soul, funk, hip-hop, and spoken word into a vibrant musical tapestry. Led by frontwoman Tarriona "Tank" Ball's dynamic vocals and poetic lyricism, they captivate audiences worldwide with their infectious energy and genre-defying sound, earning acclaim and a devoted following. Co-Headliners Scarface Scarface, born Brad Jordan, is a legendary rapper hailing from Houston, Texas. He is a founding member of the Geto Boys, know for his adept storytelling. With a career spanning decades, Scarface remains a revered figure. He's been honored with numerous awards, including a BET Hip Hop Award for "I Am Hip Hop Icon" and induction into The Source's "Top 50 Lyricists of All Time." Noteworthy Performers OG Ron C OG Ron C, a pioneer of the chopped and screwed sound, hails from Houston, Texas. As a DJ, producer, and founder of Swishahouse Records, he's shaped Southern hip- hop's landscape. Renowned for his signature slowed-down remixes, he's earned respect for his influential contributions to the genre, defining a unique musical style. LECTURE SERIES GUEST SPEAKERS| MONDAY JUNE 17-19, 2024 Founder Torch Literay Arts Amanda Johnston 2024 Presidential Candidate Dr. Cornell West Amanda Johnston (born 1977) is an African-American poet. She was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, and currently resides in Round Rock/Austin, Texas. Amanda Johnston received a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the University of Southern Maine. She is the 2024 Texas Poet laureate and the first Black woman to receive this honor. Cornel Ronald West (born June 2, 1953) is an American philosopher, theologian, political activist, social critic, actor, and public intellectual. The grandson of a Baptist minister, West's primary philosophy focuses on the roles of race, gender, and class struggle in American society. Public Scholar Dr. Marlon M. Bailey Public Scholar Zoe Samudzi Marlon M. Bailey is a Black queer theorist and critical/performance ethnographer who studies Black LGBTQ cultural formations, sexual health, and HIV/AIDS prevention. He is the author of Butch Queen Up in Pumps: Gender, Performances, and Ballroom Culture in Detroit. Zoé Samudzi is an Assistant Professor in Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design, a Research Associate at the Center for the Study of Race, Gender and Class at the University of Johannesburg, and a member of the Race, Medicine, and Social Justice research cluster at the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University.
