He graduated from the University of Texas with a business administration degree and earned a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University. Ross is currently CEO and chairman of the board of National Western Life Group, Inc. and the chairman of the board of American National Insurance Company. He is also on the boards of the Transitional Learning Center, the Moody Endowment and the Moody College of Communication. Ross has a deep appreciation for education and the environment. He led the Foundation in the creation of the Generation Moody Education Initiative and on major public space initiatives in Austin via investments in the Pease Park Conservancy and Waller Creek Conservancy. Mattsson-McHale Foundation – $3M gift Private family foundation in Austin. Chris Mattsson is a local philanthropist who serves on Waterloo Greenway’s Board of Directors and is the Capital Campaign Co Chair. Chris serves on the board of The Contemporary Austin and is Past Board Chair of KLRU. Kitty King Powell – $2M gift Kitty King Powell had spent her early years in Austin before moving to Houston in 1955—but she never forgot the role Austin played in shaping her life. Waller Creek was central to Kitty King’s memories of Austin. Her daughter Nancy writes, “Waller Creek edged the University of Texas where she had studied bacteriology in the late 1930’s, and she saw opportunity in the Waller Creek Conservancy’s plans (which she learned of in 2015). Kitty King always saw herself as an adventurous person. Shortly before she died at age 98, she acted from that nature. Her gift of $2 million for the Waller Creek parks project would help restore the wonder of Austin in its natural loveliness for those coming together from all over the city.” Luci Baines Johnson & Ian Turpin – $500K gift + $500k Match Campaign Sisters Lynda Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson were teenagers when their father suddenly became President of the United States on November 22, 1963. They both married during their father's presidency, and they were frequent residents of the White House as young mothers while their husbands served in Vietnam. They witnessed the tumultuous late '60s from a unique vantage point. Both have been enthusiastic community volunteers, earning numerous civic awards for their service. Luci is the mother of three daughters and one son (Lyndon Nugent, Texas State class of 1989), and she and her husband Ian Turpin live in Austin. Lady Bird Johnson was an advocate for Wall Creek and Luci is honoring her mother with this gift. Lebermann Foundation – $1M gift Lebermann Foundation is a private grantmaking foundation in Victoria, Texas. Lowell H. Lebermann, Jr. was a member of the Austin City Council from 1971 to 1977 and was instrumental in the Bicentennial Austin Creeks Project that revitalized Waller Creek and created the current trails and infrastructure along it. Lowell Lebermann’s daughter, Virginia Lebermann, served on the founding board of the Waller Creek Conservancy (now Waterloo Greenway Conservancy). Suzanne Deal Booth – $1.5M gift Suzanne Deal Booth served on the founding board of the Waller Creek Conservancy (now Waterloo Greenway Conservancy). She has been committed to the recognition, preservation and conservation of visual arts and cultural heritage for more than three decades. A native of Texas, Deal Booth graduated cum laude with a degree in art history from Rice University followed by a Master of Arts in art history and conservation from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts and Conservation Center. As a work/study student at Rice and NYU, she had the opportunity to work directly under the tutelage of humanist, art collector and philanthropist Dominique de Menil. This marked the beginning of a meaningful exposure to sophisticated cultural patronage and has served as an ongoing inspiration throughout Deal Booth’s career and life. Lynn & Tom Meredith – $1M gift Tom Meredith is a founder of the Waller Creek Conservancy (now Waterloo Greenway Conservancy) and continues to serve on the Board Of Directors as Immediate Past Chair. He is a Senior Partner at Brightstar and a Member of the Investment Committee and a founder of Waterloo Greenway Conservancy. Tom serves on the boards of the Nature Conservancy. Tom and his wife Lynn were named 2012 Chamber of Commerce Austinites of the Year; recipients of the 2010 Austin Community Foundation Philanthropy Award for donors who have shown philanthropic leadership in Central Texas; the Torch of Liberty Award given by the ADL in 2006; Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year given by the Association of Professional Fundraisers in 2004; and an Honorary Alumni Award given by Leadership Austin in 2003. Rosemary and Russell Douglass – $1M gift Russell Douglass serves on the Board of Directors of Waterloo Greenway Conservancy. He is is President of High Sierra Resources and Raptor Resources. Russell and his wife Rosemary attended the University of Texas and live in the Travis Heights neighborhood in Austin. Susan and Gary Farmer – $2M gift Gary Farmer serves on the Board of Directors of Waterloo Greenway Conservancy and is the Capital Campaign Co Chair. Gary is President of Heritage Title Company of Austin, Inc., a commercially oriented title insurance agency operating throughout the major markets of Texas. Gary is involved in a variety of civic and charitable endeavors. Currently, Gary serves as Chairman of the Greater Austin Economic Development Corporation, Opportunity Austin 4.0 Campaign and Co-Chair of the Waller Creek Conservancy Capital Campaign. Additionally, Gary serves as a Board Member of the following organizations: The University of Texas Chancellor’s Council, The University of Texas Development Board, the President’s Council of The Real Estate Council of Austin, the National Multi Housing Council and The Waller Creek Conservancy. Peggy and Matt Winkler – $1M gift Peggy Winkler serves on the Board of Directors of Waterloo Greenway Conservancy. She is an environmentalist and local philanthropist. Peggy sits on the Advisory Board of Families in Nature, the Advisory Council of the Colorado River Alliance, and previously sat on the board of Westcave. Peggy was honored as a River Hero by the Colorado River Alliance in 2017.
