Please explain below. Fuck no. That’s more than most musicians in this city earn in a year. If everyone who applied got even a $1,000 or $2,000 grant, that would have done FAR more for the Austin music ecosystem I felt they were appropriate. 37 Yes Yes Yes Too large Definitely I’m a venue operator Yes but there should have been di!erent tiers for di!erent levels of artists https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 36 of 61 out of 38 answered Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:57 AM 30,000 is too much I think Yes, but 10k and 5k grants in addition might make it feel less the “all or nothing” process so many non-recipients have been voicing If they stick with two tiers, it should probably be $10k and $20k so more people can get the grant. Anything lower than that is not significant enough to make a di!erence. Not necessarily, I think you could’ve gotten more bang for your buck by subsidizing already working musicians. That would be enough for super reliable gig transportation. That depends, but in short, no. The application seemed to lean towards doing one big show/production. I chose to o!er 5 shows because that would be a better use of $ and more beneficial to my career, but my app was denied. One big production for 30k is putting it all in one basket and a waste of resources. With that said, a medium level production can easily eat up a 10k budget. I guess the app seemed a bit ambiguous and didn't actually focus on what the production(s) actually might be in detail. Lower amounts for more musicians would have elevated more of the community and been more beneficial to the ecosystem We would love to get that much money - but it also seems like it would be more fair to give smaller amounts to more people. The large amount also made it seem like it was geared towards venues and promoters - not a band https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 37 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:57 AM I was fine with it, until I realized that that meant less people would get the money. No, because they raised them this year. If they kept the same amounts as last year, I feel more people would’ve gotten the grant As many others have noted, in hindsight, with less than 10% of applicants receiving awards, perhaps it would’ve been more helpful to more people if the award amounts remained similar to the 2023 amounts. Although the grant amounts are appropriate for some artists, I feel the higher amounts severely hindered the ability to award smaller grants to those that could have also benefited. It feels like people who asked for the $30,000 weren't given it and only the $15,000 people were picked but I can't say that for certain. I think all $10,000 would be nice so more people could get I think these are very appropriate amounts for the specific purposes of the grants according to their guidelines. They provide very real and useful amounts for creating a serious project: an album, a tour, a large local event, etc. Yes - it would allow me to buy new equipment, rehearse and perfect my art one yes undecided https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 38 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:57 AM No. I would've gladly taken $10k Yes, honestly anything less than $15,000 is not enough money to help change the trajectory of one’s career or su!iciently promote a professional event. I think if quality is a major factor for an artist $15000 is very impactful and shouldn’t be less Yes. Yes N Yes It’s appropriate, but I wish it was scaled like other city grants are. Ex: one person may qualify for 5k while another band qualifies for 30k. And you don’t have to choose which amount you want — it’s given based on need. No last year you gave out more. The people awarded were certainly not all meeting these guidelines. To have both of our projects which are meeting far more guidelines not qualify and see who was chosen last year and also this year is a slap in the face. Feels like a popularity contest or who you know honestly. Make grants smaller, give out more. No. $10-$20 would have supported more musicians. Musicians and venues should not be going for the same money. https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 39 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:57 AM Yes yes Na Do you feel that having a bank account should or should not have a!ected your score? Explain below? 37 I think having a bank account shouldn’t a!ect your score. Most people have bank accounts so it’s silly to be based o! that. Everyone should have a bank acct, so it should not impact scoring 100% should not. Musicians need the assistance and how they spend it shouldn’t matter at all. That’s so discriminatory towards the poor Yes. I think. Income should matter https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 40 of 61 out of 38 answered Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM This isn’t a good question. Yes. How else would one get paid? No. That was completely unnecessary and hinders minority artists doing the hard work Unsure, but it would be helpful to know why this question was posed in the first place… No, having a banking account is not an indicator of talent, creativity, or organization in the making of music. But it’s hard to do much of anything without having a bank account, so it has This should not be a consideration. been prioritized by some. one should have one. It seems logical to require all recipients to have a bank account, yes. Yes Yes No https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 41 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM It’s no one’s business Not sure I think if you're a professional a musician that doesn't have a checking account in 2024, that's ridiculous. They're literally free. I feel strongly that having a bank account should not a!ect scoring. While I recognize that many less fortunate people remain unbanked, this seems a very high bar—and, a bar that anyone who has pretty much always had a bank account is powerless to change. I feel that having a bank account is a personal choice and should not a!ect one’s ability to qualify for a grant. If the applicant is awarded a grant they are still required to account for funds regardless of what method is used to store the money. Should not a!ect it, definitely not in a negative way I understand that grant processes have certain safety and regulatory policies that require levels of security that banks provide. But I think alternative options should exist for cultures who don't trust banks. No. Participation in the banking system is no indicator of the value of a person's artistic e!orts. I think a bank account provides for less fraud for the fund but I don't mind either way https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 42 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM Was your understanding that having health insurance would negatively a!ect your score? Explain below. 37 No I had no understanding of that nor was it highlighted through the application process. No, I wasn't aware of that Seemed like it Na Health insurance may be something that we get through profession or retirement which we can spend following our musical dreams. Don’t understand why this question is part of the survey. https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 43 of 61 out of 38 answered Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM Don’t understand why this question is part of the survey. Yes, it was clear. Had no idea. And this was absolutely insane. No NO no No idea No, I’m only now learning that this is negative thing for applicants I thought that might be the case. It did not. And I don’t imagine that receiving the grant would have changed somebody’s choice on this app this point. I didn't know that, nor do I have health insurance. I don't believe that this should a!ect the score, though. That is just silly and irresponsible. The score should be based more on what the actual events/productions would be and how they would help launch/bolster careers. https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 44 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM No I had no idea, and that's awful. No, that was not explained at all. Bc last year several people I know got the grant and have insurance. I don’t see why that should negatively a!ect your score, that has nothing to do with your music. Like having a bank account, this criteria also seems problematic. Having a bank account is exceedingly common. Having health insurance isn’t just common. It was illegal not to have it until just a few years ago, and depending on the coming election results, it may soon be illegal to not have health insurance once again. Awarding points to applicants for having or not something that may or may not be legal or illegal in any given year is confusing and unfair. Yes, I assumed that the “luxury” to a!ord health insurance would negatively a!ect my score when in reality the high expense of necessary health coverage (in the case of those who’s lives depend on it) is one of the financial roadblocks that warrants the need to apply for a grants. I could’ve went on tour, paid for rehearsals. I could’ve restocked my merch, took care of my band needs for live performances. I could’ve used that money for marketing music videos, shows and new music. There’s so many things I could’ve used that money for to help further my music career. Those of us who don’t contribute to DEI tick boxes — but who have a long track record of promoting underserved/underrepresented artists/audience — might be given more consideration before being rejected outright. This grant has been very good for me. Through the first round, I was able to put together a big show for my band. It was the best show we’ve ever played. For the second round, I was able to secure funding for a new album my band is recording. It relieved a lot of stress for me personally, because I don’t have to self-fund the album like I did on our previous releases. Just found out about it. I wish it would have scored more appropriate criteria. If I had received this grant, I would have gotten myself and my musicians several good shows with guarantee pay for quality work. It would have benefitted the local businesses I chose to work with, and it would have bolstered my brand (which could certainly use bolstering). I am a hard working and talented musician, but I, and many like me, are struggling under the surface. Help more of my music community Better explanation of what we could use it for and who it was for It's very complicated. They could simplify the process. First of all, some of the things that negatively a!ected scores had nothing to do With music. And some of the other reasons why people did not get the grant were a puzzle as well. For example, being too wordy on your application. But then it says you have to explain everything. It was very confusing. Mainly, I would urge the LMF to ignore any factors that applicants are powerless to change. I can’t change that I don’t live in a qualified census tract. And by the way, being penalized for that stings extra for me. Years ago, I could no longer a!ord to live in downtown Austin. My solution was to buy land and spend almost 10 years building a home in Southeastern Travis’s County with my own blood, sweat and tears. I shouldn’t be penalized for working hard to overcome Austin’s housing a!ordability woes. Similarly, I can’t help that I have long had a bank account. In my opinion, checking all the right boxes on an application shouldn’t outweigh the evidence of merit provided by the applicant which proves their involvement and dedication to the Austin Live https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 48 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM Music scene. I think the grants should just be for working musicians to create art and less about how it can benefit tourism. If they want to keep calling Austin the "Live Music Capital of the World" then they need to help musicians survive with these grants and that will in turn keep musicians in Austin for their "tourism needs" I honestly think it was well-thought-out and well implemented. I felt like most of the established local musicians were not cared about. Na Made no sense and they made it seem like we musicians had to provide details for projects that would only benefit tourism. Like WTF we’re musicians. We’re hired to perform music, not come up with a plan for the city to bring in visitors. I'm just happy that it exists. Fund venues I don’t believe the guidelines mattered. Please do the right thing by checking in on these musicians then make a decision based on that, thank you! This thing was fucked up in every way. Feels like the people in charge were completely out of touch with the reality of the Austin music community. How did none of the top musicians in town or people who have been doing this for 20+ years get a grant? How does this application or organization influence or shape decision making with the people who manage the live music fund application process? There were people that got the grants that don’t even live in Austin. There are people calling themselves independent promoters, one of them being the music chair of the music commission that received funding and they barely do anything to independently promote other musicians. The entire process needs to change. https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 57 of 61 No Thank you for being. Venues need help Not at this time. This is great to have, but it does make for oddly tourism-based applications (which is fine if your organization’s name is SXSW or ACL… the bulk of the rest of us are in perpetual struggle/hustle to just get the locals to show up). I really do appreciate all that you all do… any arts support is good for the world. Thank you! There has been a lot of complaining about this grant. While I agree some very good people got rejected from this grant, I think a lot of the issue is people not taking the time to learn how to write a good grant proposal. Perhaps there needs to be more focus on education on grant writing rather than simply changing the rules to accommodate more people. Thanks for asking these questions and I look forward to hearing the results. The last grant I got was monumental to my tango band. It provided work for dozens of people, and created an amazing show. I really appreciate this program and what it does for artists. I just hope to be luckier next time. I sure could use it. It’s worthwhile to assess whether the live music fund grants are a net positive for the encouragement and empowerment of the community as a whole or if they create additional discouragement and competitive sentiment No thanks. Nah I'd rather have a smaller grant with more people getting accepted than bigger grants. https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 58 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM I just feel like it wasn’t fair to some of the veteran musicians here in town that have been scraping by to make it in the music business to not get the grant. Then see someone who has only lived here a year and get it. I felt the guidelines were unclear and unfair. I’d just like to thank all of the many people who are working on such a knotty, tedious and emotional program. It can’t be easy to balance so many competing preferences. Remember to eat some ice cream. Transparency would be nice, knowing who got them and feedback for those who did not Frankly, I think this is a successful program. I see musicians' complaints about it as an indication not of the program's deficiencies, but as a lack of educational resources for those musicians to accomplish normal professional tasks. Filling out forms and writing grant proposals are laborious and annoying... and an integral part of business-to-business function when dealing with nonprofits. I intend to help my fellow musicians with their grant applications next year, but I also strongly believe musicians in Austin need to strengthen their own reading and writing skills within their communities. No no no Thank you for your support ! The feud between CAD and music division is silly but again I'm grateful for 2023 funding and never expect an easy "yes" on grants. N/A No Thank you N I’m concerned people will feel entitled to this money, when it’s really intended for historically marginalized communities and those who need it most. One concern of mine is the “music as a full time job” element. It should go into more detail about that. What if someone has a nest egg that allows them to play music full time? That’s di!erent than someone who makes 30k a year playing gigs and doesn’t have health insurance. This process made me feel like my city doesn’t support me. My work goes way beyond a band asking for help with an album release. Last year you funded a ton of random projects like that. We do work in the community, putting in hours of work and many many public facing events. To see the projects that were chosen last year and this year and to be denied 2 years in a row for one project and this year for another shows what is being supported. Also please be more transparent with who is getting the awards and how they won. Make smaller grants that help more people. Stop just trying to focus only on getting funds to new people. It leaves those of us that have been working for decades in the lurch. https://form.typeform.com/report/jwcAxV8J/i3uQI6HAiKRYqYqB?view_mode=print Page 60 of 61 Live Music Fund Feedback 2024 1/3/25, 10:58 AM I’d encourage musicians to try to understand the grant fund provider’s agenda and apply accordingly.
