AUSTIN MUSIC COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES The Austin Music Commission convened on March 1, 2021 via videoconference. March 1, 2021 BOARD MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: Chair – Jonathan “Chaka” Mahone, Vice-chair – Anne-Charlotte Patterson, Secretary – Oren Rosenthal, Gavin Garcia, Doug Leveton, Paul Pinon, Graham Reynolds, Stuart Sullivan Staff in Attendance: Erica Shamaly, Kim McCarson, Stephanie Bergara CALL TO ORDER 6:37pm MUSICAL PERFORMANCE CITIZEN COMMUNICATION: GENERAL Sonya Jevette and Lauryn Gould of Austin Texas Musicians speak in support of gender equity for women in the music industry. Celina Zisman, Arts Commissioner, speaks in support of equity for women in the music industry and requests formation of a gender equity working group. 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Approval of minutes from the February 1, 2021 Music Commission meeting. Commissioner Reynolds motions and Commissioner Pinon seconds approval of the minutes. Motion carries 8-0. 2. OLD BUSINESS a. Discussion and Possible Action Esquina Tango update by Al Duarte including discussion on downtown activation resolution, Shop the Block program amendments, and city support for leveraging underutilized and open spaces for creative use during COVID. Commissioner Leveton motions and Commissioner Reynolds seconds to move up item 2.c. to the top of the agenda. No action taken on item 2.a. b. Discussion and Possible Action after update from Systemic Racism Working Group. No action taken. c. Discussion and Possible Action following update on Downtown Commission following update from August Harris, Downtown Commission Chair. No action taken. 3. NEW BUSINESS None 1 AUSTIN MUSIC COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES March 1, 2021 FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS Vice-chair Patterson motions and Commissioner Reynolds seconds for discussion and possible action on increasing equity for women and identifying contributors to Austin’s music industry and possible establishment of a gender working group. Commissioner Leveton motions for discussion and possible action on the future of downtown Austin music following presentations by Downtown Austin Alliance, someone involved in writing music into code, a representative from the Austin Convention Center, a representative from a cultural district, and the Music Venue Alliance. Commissioner Reynolds seconds. Vice-chair motions and Commissioner Reynolds seconds for discussion and possible action following Esquina Tango update by Al Duarte including discussion on downtown activation resolution, Shop the Block program amendments, and city support for leveraging underutilized and open spaces for creative use during COVID. Chair Mahone motions and Commissioner Reynolds seconds for discussion and possible action following update from Systemic Racism Working Group. Commissioner Leveton motions and Chair Mahone seconds on discussion and possible action on a submission process for live performances at Music Commission meetings.
