No prior experience or partner is needed. Learn rowing stroke basics, how to stay safe on the water and handle the rowing equipment. Expect a fun, beginner friendly, and lively experience. Healing Garden Workday Sunday, June 29th @ 8:30am – 10am Sunset Valley Community Garden Attendance: 8 At the ESB-MACC's Healing Garden, we grow herbs that can be used in everyday health. If you are interested in gardening or sharing in our harvest, join us for one of our workdays. Volunteers will be working hands on maintaining the garden and its infrastructure. Summer Solstice & Three Sisters Garden Sunday, June 29, 8:30am-10:00am Attendance: 10 In this sunny workshop we will celebrate the summer solstice by planting our traditional three sisters garden with beans, corn and squash. After gardening we will learn the healing benefits of maize y teosinte by creating our own Agua Fresca De Elote de Oaxaca. Youth and Family Education Raices Summer Camp Asian American Resource Center Monday-Friday 7am-6pm This summer, the ESB-MACC Education team hosted three sessions of Raíces Summer Camp at the Asian American Resource Center, each centered around the theme of cultural diversity across Latin America. Over the course of each three-week session, campers explored different regions through art, dance, storytelling, and history. Week 1 focused on North America, where participants learned about the Indigenous peoples of Central Texas, engaged in a Danza Mexica workshop, studied La Danza de los Viejitos from Michoacán, and explored the work of prominent Mexican photographers. Students also took a field trip to San Marcos for a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour at Aquarena Springs to learn about its historical significance to the Coahuiltecan people. Week 2, lessons highlighted Cuban heritage, Nicaraguan traditions like El Güegüense, and Puerto Rican storytelling. We also welcomed Nelson Saga, producer of the animated film Cipitio, who led a fun and engaging workshop on music and legends from El Salvador. Week 3 emphasized Afro-Latin American influences, including an Afro-Cuban dance workshop with Oro Dance Company, an exploration of Colombia’s role in shaping Cumbia and protest performance, and the completion of student-created theatre and performance pieces. The Education team will host our last open house on Friday, August 8th, 2025 from 3pm-5pm at the Asian American Resource Center. Upcoming: "Día Divertido" is a free drop-in program designed to keep youth culturally engaged and entertained. Each day students will participate in dance, music, and arts & crafts. The program serves students ages 5-12. There are three drop-in camp days: Monday, August 11, Tuesday, August 12, & Wednesday, August 13. On each of those three days, we will admit the first 24 students to arrive at the Asian American Resource Center. Students can attend one, two, or three days! This is a first-come, first- served program. Location: Asian American Resource Center (AARC) 8401 Cameron Rd. Austin, TX Dates: August 11, 12, 13 Hours: 9:00am-6:00pm. Parents must drop their children off and pick them up! Capacity: 24 students per day How to Attend: Please arrive at the AARC no later than 9:00am. You will have to fill out a waiver form for your child(ren) to enter the camp! Caminos Teen Leadership Program Past: Presentation at Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center July 1, 1:00 pm Attendance: 20 Caminos Teen Leadership Coordinator Eufemia Rivera presented in a panel at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center to students who are low vision or no vision. This was through the Texas workforce commission. There was a panel discussion regarding the Caminos Internship and Eufemia answered questions regarding the program. Parks and Recreation Playgrounds Drop-In June and July at various parks: Garrision Park, Dick Nichols, Walnut Creek Park, Gillis Park Attendance: 205 in total Eufemia Rivera and the Caminos team provided information and activities to kids ages 5-12. They taught screen printing, painting, sculptures, lowriders and luchador masks to participants. “Jr. Caminantes” ages 11-12 were provided with Caminos stickers and zines. Pan Am Hillside Summer Concert Series Pan Am Recreation Center July 15, 22, 29 & August 5, 2025. 6:00-9:00pm. Attendance: 200-500 per evening The Caminos Team provided cultural activities and fun activities such as luchador mask, lowriders, button making Floral Crown making, Painting , amistad bracelets and board games for all children attending the event with family. Adults have also participated in the activities. Caminos Class of 2025: Graduation June 10, Dougherty Arts Center Attendance: 50 Caminos Class of 2026 is currently in the 2nd round of interviews. The new cohort will be announced at the end of August. Outreach and Marketing Past: Outreach at the Long Center Drop-In Long Center, Thursdays 5-9pm Attendance: 2000+ people weekly We have been talking to the attendees at the Long Center at their weekly free Summer concert series. We promote Hillside and the MACC’ grand reopening, and we provide fun children’s activities. We’ve been doing Selena paper dolls and face painting that’s been really popular! Many of the attendees are familiar with the MACC and are eager for the reopening. Some folks we’ve met are Caminos parents, AISD Spanish teachers, and local musician and artist families. Presentation at the Austin Saltillo Sister Cities Virtual Meeting -Saltillo Sister Cities, July 24 10-11am Attendance: 20 Virtual presentation to the Austin Saltillo Sister Cities conference “Mesa de Trabajo: Culture, Arts, Gastronomy and Tourism /Cultura, Artes, Gastronomía y Turismo. We joined virtually as part of the annual Austin Day in Saltillo celebration. They held 5 different Mesas (or workshops) at Universidad Carolina’s Creative Campus. Olivia presented on the MACC and proposed ideas of how we can work with Saltillo including traveling exhibits or visiting chefs who can utilize the MACC in upcoming years. Latino Leadership Luncheon July 11, 11:30am-1:30pm, PBS at ACC Highland Attendance: 30 We presented about the MACC and networked at this HABLA event. In attendance were Fely Garcia, Paul Saldana, Lily Zamarripa-Saenz, Ivan Davila, Stephanie Gattica, and many others! We invited them all to the MACC grand reopening on November 1. Day of the Dead Presentation at Oakwood Cemetery Friday, Aug 1, 10:00am-11:00am Attendance: 10 local families Presentation to help plan the Oakwood Cemetery Day of the Dead celebration in November 2025. Upcoming: Mexic-Arte Viva la Vida Parade Mexic-Arte Museum, Saturday October 25 Attendance: 10,000 people attend annually The ESB MACC staff has signed up to march in the annual Viva la Vida parade! Signature Events Past: Awards of Excellence Long Center, Kodosky Lounge, June 28 3:00-5:00pm Attendance: 95 Thank you to the ESB MACC Advisory Board for your support in this event. Our Awardees and their families enjoyed the ceremony and recognized the role that the ESB MACC has in promoting the cultural arts. Mayor Watson gave an inspirational speech and the attendees experiences a relaxed afternoon that included opera and ballet folklorico performances by the winners. Upcoming: El Grito at Republic Square Park Monday, September 15, 2025 6:00-9:00pm The ESB MACC will collaborate with the Consulate General of Mexico, the Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Association, and various community partners. Austin’s annual "Fiesta de El Grito de Independencia" is a musical celebration of Mexican Independence. The ESB MACC will provide event assistance, children’s activities, and marketing at this event in order to provide a Viva Mexico- presence during the time when we will be moving into the new building. On July 29, a City of Austin Proclamation was presented by Councilman Jose Velasquez & Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes to the family of Johnny Gonzalez, Posthumous. Pedro Paramo Film Screening Carver Museum, July 31, 6:00-9:00pm Attendance: 100 This free film screening in was collaboration with the Mexican Consulate and the George Washington Carver Museum and Genealogy Center. It is a film adaptation of Pedro Páramo, based on the novel by Juan Rulfo, which is considered one of the most important works of Mexican and Latin American literature. The film was screened in Spanish with English subtitles. The event included an introduction by the Honorable Humberto Hernández-Haddad, Consul General of Mexico and a post-film conversation by Dr. Jacqueline Avila whose current projects focus on transnationalism, nostalgia, and cultural identity in Latinx film and streaming media and the musical cultures on the US-Mexico border.
