Holistic Wellness Programming Past: All-Levels Yoga: Saturdays @ 10:30-11:30am Southeast Library. Attendance: 26 Focuses on body awareness, connection with the breath, with gentle movement, and time for meditation and relaxation. The library has mats to share. Chair Yoga: 3rd Wed of each month @ 10am Dove Springs Recreation Center. Attendance: 5 Chair Yoga: 3rd Wed of each month @ 10am Windsor Park Library. Attendance: 2 A gentle form of yoga that can be done seated in a chair. These modifications make yoga accessible to people with various physical abilities. Nourishing Flow: 1st Sat of each month @ 1:30-2:30pm My Vinyasa Practice- SoCo Studio. Attendance: 8 A gentle and restorative yoga class that invites you to reconnect with your body and breath. Through mindful movement, soothing breathwork, and the healing power of sound, we’ll cultivate a deep sense of relaxation Guitar Lessons (15+): Tuesdays, starting January 28 @ 3-4:15 George Washington Carver Museum Beg: 3-3:30pm / Inter: 3:45-4:15pm. Attendance: 21 Join accomplished musician Mauricio Callejas for guitar lessons for beginners (finger placement, strumming, sight-reading) and intermediate (chord progressions, ear training, reading sheet music) students. Please bring your guitar. Voice/Guitar/Songwriting Lessons Beg/Inter (15+): Mondays, starting Jan. 27 @ 4-5pm Windsor Park Library Attendance: 17 Join award winning song-writer Javier Jara for voice, guitar and songwriting lessons. Skills addressed: left and right hand technique, chords, arpeggios, strumming patterns, vocal technique, and songwriting approaches. Please bring your own guitar. Taller Abierto: Painting Workshop (15+): 4th Sat of each month @ 2-4pm North Village Branch Library. Attendance: 9 Art classes for all levels. Includes exploration of different techniques. All materials provided! Pre-registration required. Slow Flow + Sound Healing 4th Sat of each month @ 1:30-2:30pm My Vinyasa Practice - Highland Studio. Attendance: 9 Join us with Isabel and Aneika for a serene and rejuvenating yoga experience. Designed to melt away stress and tension, this class combines gentle yoga poses, breathing techniques, and guided relaxation. The final relaxation includes sound healing bowls to help calm the mind, ease the body, and enhance overall well-being. Great for all levels. Community Drumming 4th Sat of each month @ 3:30pm Windsor Park Library. Attendance: 12 Play drums influenced by West African, Afro-Latin & contemporary styles. Class starts with a movement warm up, then use drums, bells, and shakers to learn basic rhythms and play as a group. Drums provided - feel free to bring your own drum or percussion instrument.Bilingual Yoga + Sound Genealogy 101 (15+) Saturday, March 8 @ 1-3pm George Washington Carver Genealogy. Attendance: 8 Participants will learn that the journey into their ancestral past starts with them. Tools to assist in this journey will be presented and will help with what how to record, where to do research, and tips on organizing research. After the presentation, participants will get hands-on-experience by using the on-site computers to log into Family Search, or bring your own laptop. Women’s Circle (16+) Sunday, Mar 16, Apr 13 & May 11 @ 3:30-5pm The Center for Arts + Healing. Attendance: 10 Join us to share in plática (heart-centered conversation), self-care practices, and canto (song). This is a time to connect with others, nurture yourself, and refill your cup under the light of the full moon. Volunteer Club - Central Texas Food Bank Thurs, March 6 @ 1-4pm Central Texas Food Bank. Attendance: 4 Get a behind-the-scenes look at how donated food gets from the community to Central Texans in need. You’ll inspect, sort, clean, box and prepare donations for distribution. Pre-registration required by Feb 28. 4th Annual Day of Wellness Sunday, March 23rd @ 8am-12:30pm Sunset Valley Community Garden. Attendance: 85 We had a full morning of family-friendly activities: birdwatching, gardening, yoga & meditation, cooking demo, arts and crafts activities, music and more. Bilingual Yoga + Sound w/ Castle Hill Fitness Monday, March 31 @ 6-7pm Waterloo Greenway- Moody Theatre. Attendance: 76 Melt away stress and tension with Isabel and Aneika. Healing Garden Workday Sunday, April 27 @ 9am Inclusive Garden Activity @ 10am Sunset Valley Community Garden Volunteers will work hands-on maintaining the Healing Garden. An inclusive, sensory based garden activity led by Jesus Garcia will follow. Please dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. Youth and Family Education Sabados en Familia 4/12/2025, 12-2pm, Pleasant Hill Branch Library 5/10/2025, 12-2pm, Milwood Branch Library March's "Sabados en Familia" took place on March 8th at the North Village Branch Library, with 13 participants in attendance. The education team read Spike: The Mixed Up Monster by Susan Hood and made Axolotl masks. Join the next Sabados en Familia on April 12th at the Pleasant Hill Branch Library as they read A Crown for Corina by Laekan Zea Kemp. Today is Corina’s birthday, and she’s excited to wear the biggest crown with beautiful flowers picked from her abuela’s garden. Each flower tells a special story about all the ways Corina is rooted in the family she loves. Participants will make Tissue Paper Flowers and Crowns. The Education team hosted its Spring Break Camp, Siembra, at the Asian American Resource Center, March 17th – 21st. The 11 participants learned about Tejano music and made instruments to form their own Conjunto Tejano. They explored Borderlands and Mexican American culture, making dioramas. They went to visit the Mosaic Workshop, where they made mosaics with artist J Muzacz. Guest instructor Jesus Garcia from Herbal Action Project educated them about Central Texas native plants while helping them create clay pot gardens. The Education team was glad to help support this year’s Holistic Day of Wellness on Sunday, March 23rd by providing children's activities. Participants had the opportunity to paint rocks and create watercolor portraits with found objects. Día del Niño 4/29/25, 3-6pm, The Thinkery The ESB-MACC education team is partnering with the Thinkery for their annual Día del Niño event on Tuesday, April 29th, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the Thinkery Museum. We’re hosting a pop-up karaoke booth celebrating Bad Bunny and his new album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos. Inspired by the theme of capturing moments, families can take home a printed Polaroid picture. To get into the karaoke spirit, attendees will also be able to create their own microphone. Feel free to invite families to join us for this fun, family-friendly event! The event partners are AVANCE-Austin, the ESB MACC, and CapMetro. Morning Glories 4/8/2025, 10-11am Waterloo Park Waterloo Greenway’s Morning Glories is a weekly early childhood education series offering activities that foster literacy, bilingual storytelling, & cultural exploration. The MACC will provide the bilingual read along and hands-on art project on Tuesday, April 8th! They will read Sana Sana Colita de Rana by Citlali Reyes and make luchador masks! Academia Cuauhtli Caminos Teen Leadership Program Breaking Barriers 3/29/25, Asian American Resource Center Youth Mental Health Conference Breaking Barriers 2025 had over 45 teens in attendance! They enjoyed Caminos and Mentor lead workshops such as vision boarding, and screen printing along with a bit of fashion design and keynote and performer Saul Paul. Caminos Teen Leadership Students worked very hard to have such a fun well attended event. Great Job Caminos class of 2025! Academia Cuauhtli Academia Cuauhtli has joined Start Empowerment for their Earth Month gathering happening Saturday, April 5th, from 10- 2PM at Chicano Park, centering resistance, restoration, and Indigenous knowledge! Indigenous groups, youth, and community organizations will lead a run, a water ceremony, a traditional Potawatomi game, corn husk doll making, a seed ball workshop, water testing, traditional food preparation, and much more. Families are encouraged to attend to learn about the communities at the forefront of Indigenous knowledge-keeping in Central Texas. In its 14th year, the ESB MACC's annual La Mujer event celebrates women and women-identifying individuals in Austin’s Mexican American and Latina/o/x/e community. This event is on Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. It is a free event that is open to all ages, gender identities, and cultural identities where women can be seen, heard, and empowered. Free workshops and activities focus on wellness, women in justice, know-your-rights, and all-local visual and performing arts groups. There is a focus on uplifting and hiring women for all roles of this event, including our graphic design, sound engineer, etc! EVENT LOCATION For the first time, the ESB MACC will host this event at Parque Zaragoza, 2608 Gonzales St Austin, TX 78702. This will be an indoor & outdoor event using both the interior of the Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center and the park and outdoor stage behind it. There is a playground on site that will be open during the event for kids. The pool will not be open. Please dress accordingly. We are grateful to be hosting this event at Parque Zaragoza, a park with a long rich historical significance to East Austin. All event activities and workshops are free! This event will bring together women artisans, activists, and community builders! It will feature special appearances by Judge Bianca Garcia, Judge Denise Hernandez, Judge Sandy Avila Ramirez, and Councilmember Vanessa Fuentes. It will feature an artist marketplace by Frida Friday ATX, and free hands-on activities and workshops for all ages. FRIDAY FRIDAY ATX - OUTDOOR ART MARKET We are excited to partner with Friday Friday ATX Artisan Marketplace with TK Tunchez and Las Ofrendas! Frida Friday ATX is an economic movement of intersectional marketplaces & cultural spaces centering Latinx, BIPOC & queer folks. A great opportunity to shop & support local businesses! The market will be open throughout the event, 12:00pm - 5:00pm. PUBLIC ART SELECTED ARTISTS (Art in Public Places) Kat Talley and Ruben Esquivel, the selected artists for the Art In Public Places Phase II sculptural project at the ESB-MACC will be engaging the community during the La Mujer event. The artists will inform and gather inspiration from the public, as they work towards the completion of their Conceptual Design. Participants will be able to learn more about the artists’ goals as well as share their own personal ESB-MACC stories. Awards of Excellence - Saturday, June 28, 2025 Long Center- Kodosky Lounge Nominations for Awards of Excellence are now closed. The nomination form was open from January 27th to March 23rd. We have received 34 nominations. www.AustinTexas.gov/MaccAwards Outreach: We distributed flyers at recreation centers & libraries, and also at Cisco’s, Joe’s Bakery, La Pena, Mexic-Arte, GAHCC, the Mexican Consulate, and AISD. We emailed everyone who submitted nominations in 2024, 2023, and 2022 asking them to consider nominating again this year. We ran an Instagram ad from Feb 25- March 7 for get a bigger reach. We posted videos of past awards and encouraged nominations. Collaborations Fiesta Reclamada Sunday, May 4th 12-6pm The Cathedral Fiesta Reclamada (Fiesta Reclaimed) celebrates the Fiesta season with contemporary music, dance, and visual arts, providing an authentic taste of Austin’s diverse cultures. Musical lineup includes Tish Hinojosa, Patricia Vonne, Lesley Reynaga, Javier Jara and Daniel Llanes with For the Love of It. There is plenty of street parking or check out the parking garage on 17th and Miriam. Light rail and bus options nearby. The event is sponsored by The Cathedral in collaboration with the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. This project is supported in part by the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
