Attendance: 22 Join award winning song-writer Javier Jara for voice, guitar and songwriting lessons. Skills addressed: left and right hand technique, chords, arpeggios, strumming patterns, vocal technique, and songwriting approaches. Please bring your own guitar. Attendance: Learn to play drums influenced by West African, Afro-Latin and contemporary styles. Class starts with a movement warm up, then use drums bells, and shakers to learn basic rhythms and play as a group. Drums provided - feel free to bring your own drum or percussion instrument. Attendance:19 Our goal is to help community members create basic wills, ensuring their wishes are legally documented and their families are protected. We want to help individuals gain peace of mind about their estate planning. Film Screening- A Most Beautiful Thing: Thursday, February 6 @ 6-8:30pm George Washington Carver Museum. Attendance: 53 The film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in this country (made up of young men, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago), all coming together to row in the same boat. An amazing story. Salsa Basics and Social: Saturday, February 8 @ 5pm Corazon Latino Dance Studio Attendance:12 Learn basic steps and body movements that define this popular Latin American dance. No prior experience or partner is needed Refreshments will follow. Budgeting Workshop: Wednesday February 12 @ 6-7:30pm Little Walnut Creek Library. You’ll inspect, sort, clean, box and prepare donations for distribution. Pre-registration required by Feb 28. Genealogy 101 (15+) Saturday, March 8 @ 1-3pm. George Washington Carver Genealogy Participants will learn that the journey into their ancestral past starts with them. Tools to assist in this journey will be presented and will help with what how to record, where to do research, and tips on organizing research. After the presentation, participants will get hands-on-experience by using the on-site computers to log into Family Search, or bring your own laptop. Pre-registration requested. Pre-registration required. Bilingual Yoga + Sound w/ Castle Hill Fitness Monday, March 31 @ 6-7pm. Waterloo Park Melt away stress and tension with Isabel and Aneika. This class combines gentle yoga poses, breathing techniques & guided relaxation w/ sound healing to help calm the mind & enhance overall well-being. Bring a yoga mat. Youth and Family Education Sábados en Familia This month’s Sabados en Familia was hosted on February 8th at the Menchaca Branch Library. The team read the book La Guitarrista by Lucky Diaz and were joined by past MACC Board Member, Delia Perez Meyer, who led the participants in song. They had 20 people in attendance. Join the Education team on March 8th at the North Village (John Gillum) Branch Library. This month, they will read Spike: The Mixed-Up Monster by Susan Hood. Spike is a scary-looking salamander who keeps trying to frighten other animals, until he finds that using fear is not the best way to make friends. Participants will create their own Axolotl mask. CIS After School Program Communities and Schools youth participants at the Meadowbrook site learned about the importance of Latina/o/x representation in popular media by discussing the diverse actors, directors, and visual artists in the Star Wars universe. In the six-part lesson, students also designed characters, storyboards, and backdrops, which culminated into their own Star Wars themed puppet plays. Lending Library The Education team took the Lending Library Program to Hancock and Dottie Jordan Recreation Centers. Not only did they team provide after school enrichment activities for these sites, but they also participated at Dottie Jordan Recreation Center’s Hearts and Crafts event on February 13th. This event invited the community to celebrate Valentine's day by making crafts together as a family. The lending library team hosted a table where participants could make “El Corazon” Loteria themed Valentines’ cards. They had a total of 112 participants within their 12 Lending Library sessions. Black History Month Kids Day The Education Team participated in the Carver Museum’s Black History Month Kids Day on Saturday, February 22nd. Participants had the opportunity to create their own paper dolls, highlighting Afro-Latinos in music, film, and sports, such as Celia Cruz, Rosario Dawson, and Pelé. The MACC education table had over 100 attendees. Spring Break and Summer Camp Registration Camp registrations filled up quickly! The MACC will host 12 participants during Spring Break Camp and over 80 participants during Summer Camp. Spring Break camp will be hosted March 17th – 21st at the Asian American Resource Center. This year, participants will explore Mexican American/ Chicano culture in Austin. During their morning block, students will create dioramas representing East Austin culture including murals, landscapes, and characters. During the afternoon block, students will participate in a movement-based class that would tie in Tejano/local influences on dance and music such as conjunto, tejano cumbia, etc. Academia Cuauhtli Academia Cuauhtli's spring program wrapped up on February 22nd with a joyful celebration featuring a vibrant danza performance and a family potluck. We were thrilled to welcome about 25 families who joined us over five weeks to explore Indigenous lifeways and Mexica traditions. We are deeply grateful for their participation and support. A special thank you to Mrs. Barrera-Lubman and Sanchez Elementary for graciously hosting us for another year. We also extend our gratitude to Nuestro Grupo members for their continuous support and fundraising efforts to make Cuauhtli programs possible. Caminos Teen Leadership Program Pocket Park & “Amor y Amistad” Caminos Teens celebrated “Amor Y Amistad” by exchanging valentine cards and sharing each other’s company on February 8th at Austin Central Library. This encouraged building friendships and team building amongst the group. Then they headed to the Pocket Park at the MACC to continue their mural painting project on the benches. Youth Career Fair Caminos Staff attended the youth career fair at Palmer Events Center February 11th, where teens; including current Caminantes stopped by to learn about Caminos and were invited to Breaking Barriers. We were able to increase our followers from 750 to almost 1000 followers on our social media! HBCU Day at the Carver In honor of Black History Month Caminos teens supported HBCU day at the Carver Museum and checked out their current exhibit Second Sight. They also got to see a marching band performance from Prairie View A&M university. February ended with a visit to the Museum of Illusions where Caminantes were able to see the use of lights and different ways to create illusions through the art exhibits. Breaking Barriers Teen Conference Caminantes are also preparing for breaking barriers mental health conference taking place in March. He is excited to promote positivity and mental wellness for all youth in attendance. Outreach and Marketing Feb 6- Long Center Ballet Folklorico de Amalia Hernandez Over 2200 students and teachers from Title 1 AISD schools attended a special performance at the Long Center by the world-famous Ballet Folklorico de Amalia Hernandez. The MACC provided bilingual ballet folklorico lesson plans and activities and assisted with a Q & A with the dancers post-performance. This was a partnership between the Long Center and their Long Reach for the Arts program, the Creative Learning Initiative, Austin Independent School District, and the ESB MACC. New Council Member Krista Laine was in attendance! Quote from a Martin Middle School ESL teacher: "The Ballet Folklorico today at the Long Center was the real deal!!!! Outstanding showmanship and a wonderful blending of traditional and contemporary dance . So glad we got to go. Wonderful experience for our school." Akins ECHS dual language Spanish teacher: "You don't know how much of a difference you are making for these students here at Akins…taking them on a field trip and exposing them to a cultural event." Elementary Schools: Allison Elementary, Govalle, Langford, Perez, Rodriguez, Sanchez, Widen Middle Schools: Bedicheck, Covington, Dobie, General Marshall, Gorzycki, Gus Garcia, Kealing, Lively, Martin, Paredes, Small, Webb High Schools: Akins, Anderson, Austin, Crockett, Graduation Preparatory Academy, McCallum, Navarro, Sadler Means, Travis Feb 8- Sanchez Healthy Families Event 9am-11am, Erik from Education and Olivia from Marketing attended this event at Sanchez Elementary to assist with Spring Break Camp registration and provide educational activities for families. Feb 23- Northeast Day, Bartholomew Park The MACC provided educational activities and information about our programs. Signature Events La Mujer - April 26, 2025, 12:00-5:00pm Parque Zaragoza Contact Estrella.DeLeon@austintexas.gov La Mujer: A Celebration of Women is on Saturday, April 26 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Parque Zaragoza, 2608 Gonzales St. La Mujer celebrates women and women-identifying individuals in Austin’s Mexican American and Latina/o/x/e community. It is a free event – open to all ages, gender identities, and cultural identities – where women can be seen, heard, and empowered. Free workshops and activities focus on wellness, justice, know-your-rights, and all-local visual and performing arts groups. All event activities and workshops are free and will bring together women artisans, activists, and community builders! It will feature a women of color-centered marketplace by Frida Friday ATX, hands-on activities and workshops for all ages, food trucks, and performances on the outdoor stage! There is a focus on uplifting and hiring women for all roles in the production of this event, including graphic design, sound engineer, and artists! There will be mental health resources on site presented by Ashwell House and plenty of amenities like food trucks, aguas frescas, outdoor seating, DJ music, and raffle prizes. There is a playground on site that will be open during the event where children can play. Kat Talley and Ruben Esquivel, artists for the Art In Public Places sculptural project for the ESB-MACC expansion, will be engaging the community during La Mujer. The artists will inform and gather inspiration from the public, as they work towards the completion of their conceptual design. Participants will be able to learn more about the artists’ goals as well as share their own personal ESB- MACC stories.
