Slow Flow + Sound Healing: 4th Saturdays of each month starting Jan. 25 @ 1:30-2:30pm My Vinyasa Practice- Highland Studio Attendance: 5 Join us for a serene and rejuvenating yoga experience. Designed to melt away stress and tension, this class combines gentle yoga poses, breathing techniques, and guided relaxation. The final relaxation includes sound healing bowls to help calm the mind, ease the body, and enhance overall well-being. Great for all levels. Pre-registration required. Voice/Guitar/Songwriting Lessons: Beginner/Intermediate (15+): Mondays, starting Jan. 27 @ 4-5pm Windsor Park Library Attendance: 7 Join award winning song-writer Javier Jara for voice, guitar and songwriting lessons. Skills addressed: left and right hand technique, chords, arpeggios, strumming patterns, vocal technique, and songwriting approaches. Please bring your own guitar. Pre-registration required. Will Clinic: Saturday, February 1 @ 9am-3pm Hardie Alcozer Law Firm Our goal is to help community members create basic wills, ensuring their wishes are legally documented and their families are protected. We want to help individuals gain peace of mind about their estate planning. Upcoming: Film Screening- A Most Beautiful Thing: Thursday, February 6 @ 6-8:30pm George Washington Carver Museum The film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in this country (made up of young men, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago), all coming together to row in the same boat. Class starts with a movement warm up, then use drums bells, and shakers to learn basic rhythms and play as a group. Drums provided - feel free to bring your own drum or percussion instrument. Cine de Oro: Tuesday, Feb 25 & Apr 29 @ 9-12pm Conley Guerrero Senior Activity Center Join us for a screening of a film from the golden age of Mexican cinema. Lunch will be served. Youth and Family Education Sábados en Familia The Education team hosted their first Sabados en Familia of the year at Twin Oaks Branch on January 11th. They had 15 participants attend. Join them at their next session on February 8th at the Menchaca Branch Library. The library is located at 5500 Menchaca Rd, Austin, TX 78745. On 2/8 they will read La Guitarrista by Lucky Diaz and Micah Player. This book tells the story of a tenacious girl who achieves her wildest dreams with a little help from her community and a broken guitar. Participants will make their own Pandereta and join musical guest, Delia Perez Meyer, in a musical workshop! CIS After School Program Kids are back in school from the winter break and the Education team resumed afterschool programming with Communities in School SmartKids program on January 13th. In January they served 55 Participants at the four Housing Authority of Austin sites; Bouldin Oaks, Santa Rita Courts, Booker T. Washington Courts, & Meadowbrook. The program occurs once a week at each of these sites. Education staff and CIS participants celebrated the New Year by making Aztec Calendars, and Dia De Reyes making their own Cardboard Rosca de Reyes. They have also been exploring puppetry-making and storytelling. The program continues after school, 3:30-4:30pm, through May. Find more information about CIS SmartKids program here SmartKids | Communities In Schools Of Central Texas Lending Library The Education team visited Givens and Montopolis Recreation Centers for Lending Library and served 80 participants. They led activities such as Repujado and weaving. They also celebrated Dia De Reyes by having participants make their own Pan Dulce Squishies. In February, they will visit Hancock and Dottie Jordan Recreation Centers. Camp Registration Updates: Feb 1st at 10:00AM – Early Summer Camp Registration just for Financial Aid qualifying households began Feb 8th at 10:00AM – Siembra Spring Break Camp Registration begins Feb 22nd at 10:00AM – Raices Summer Camp Registration opens for all families Spring Break and Summer Camp Registration Summer Camp information is on the PARD’s Summer Camp webpage. Camps are for students 5-12 years old. The Spring Break Camp “Siembra” is March 17, 18, 19, 20, 21. It’s a one-week camp. The fee for this one week camp is $140 for residents, $220 for non-residents. The Raices Summer Camp is divided into 3 3-week sessions: Session 1- 6/9 – 6/27 Session 2- 6/30 – 7/18 Session 3- 7/21 – 8/8 The fee is for these three week camps are $420 for residents, $660 for non- residents. Black History Month Join the Education Team at the Carver Museums Black History Month’s Kids Day on Saturday February 22nd. The MACC Education team will host an activity table where children will have the opportunity to make their own paper dolls. These paper dolls will highlight Afro-Latinos in Music, Film and Sports, such as Celia Cruz, Rosario Dawson, and Pele. Academia Cuauhtli Bilingual Education Program Financial Aid Workshops for Summer Camp Over the past few months, the ESB-MACC education team has been dedicated to making summer camp more accessible for families through a series of financial aid workshops. In collaboration with the Centralized Programs Division, we successfully hosted four workshops, helping 16 families and 26 youth participants navigate the application process. Beyond providing guidance, we actively tracked applications and ensured parents were informed and ready to register for city youth programs upon approval. This initiative marks the beginning of a broader effort to remove financial barriers and expand opportunities for more families in the future! Academia Cuauhtli Academia Cuauhtli kicked off its spring semester on Saturday, January 25, at Sanchez Elementary. Maestra Rosa Tupina Yaotonalcuauhtl and her Kalpulli, Teokalli Teoyolotl, introduced students to the sacred four directions and elements that guide Indigenous communities, along with the traditions of Danza Mexica. Families went on a field trip to Aquarena Springs on February 1, where students explored water conservation efforts and their deep connections to local Indigenous communities. Caminos Teen Leadership Program Mural Bench Project- Pocket Park The Caminos Teens were able to begin work on their second bench located at the MACC pocket park. For inspiration they stopped by this mural on the east side that matches the theme of the bench Loteria. Field Trip to the Bullock Caminos also visited the Bob Bullock Museum to learn about our great state of Texas and connect with our culture by visiting different exhibits that included history about la revolucion and Tejano artists. Breaking Barriers Teen Conference The Caminos teens have set a date for their Breaking Barriers Conference, on March 29th at the AARC. HBCU Day The Caminos teens will participate in the Carver’s HBCU Day on Feb 15. https://www.austintexas.gov/event/hbcu-day-2025-carver-museum-atx-10am Fiesta de Amistad On February 8th, the teens will have a fiesta de Amistad at the Austin Central Library before heading to the Pocket Park to work on the bench murals. Outreach and Marketing Outreach - Past Jan 14- Hispanic Austin Leadership (GAHCC) presentation to Class of 2025. We gave a detailed powerpoint and encouraged this year’s leadership class to get involved with the MACC, inviting them to nominate for Awards of Excellence and get ready to see the renovated building in the Fall. Jan 27- Hartman Bridge Opening with Waterloo Greenway. We tabled at this event that officially inaugurated the walking bridge next to the MACC. Outreach Events- Upcoming Feb 6- Long Center Ballet Folklorico de Amalia Hernandez Over 2000 students from Title 1 Middle & High Schools will have a special midday performance on Feb 6th before the ticketed public show on that same evening. The MACC will provide ballet folklorico lesson plans and activities to those students and assist with a Q & A with the dancers post-performance. Tickets are on sale now! Feb 8- Sanchez Healthy Families Event 9am-11am, will assist with Spring Break Camp registration and provide educational activities for families. Feb 11- Youth College & Career Fest Teaming up with the Caminos folks to promote Breaking Barriers Teen Conference at the end of March. Feb 17- Bailes de Mi Tierra Competition Opportunity to connect with local ballet folklorico groups, co-hosted by Roy Lozano Ballet Folklorico.
