Holistic Wellness Programming Past: 2nd Annual Tamalada Saturday, December 7 @ 1:30-5pm Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center Attendance: 89 Participants learned how to make traditional tamales with Doña Reyna from Veracruz All Natural. They also got to make corn husk dolls and holiday ornaments. Jesus Garcia from Herbal Action Project helped folks made their own champurrado kits! Participants left with some tasty tamales and recipes, and everyone really enjoyed this all-ages, bilingual event. ADA interpretation was also an appreciated feature at this event! All-Levels Yoga: Saturdays @ 10:30-11:30am (No classes Dec. 21, 28, Jan. 4) Southeast Library Attendance:16 Focuses on body awareness, connection with the breath. with gentle movement, and time for meditation and relaxation. The library has mats to share. Chair Yoga: 3rd Friday of each month @ 10:30am Yarborough Library Attendance: 11 A gentle form of yoga that can be done seated in a chair. These modifications make yoga accessible to people with various physical abilities. Healing Garden Workday (16+): Sunday, December 8 @ 9-11am Sunset Valley Community Garden Attendance: 4 At the ESB-MACC's Healing Garden, we grow herbs that can be used in everyday health. If you are interested in gardening or sharing in our harvest, join us for one of our workdays. Volunteers will be working hands on maintaining the garden and its infrastructure. Volunteer Club: Gift Sorting (16+): Thursday, December 12 @ 1:30-4:30pm Salvation Army Angel Tree Warehouse Attendance: 9 Volunteers may unpack and organize toys and clothing, set up shelving, decorate, answer phones, and fulfill wishes for children, etc. Pre-registration required. Through mindful movement, soothing breathwork, and the healing power of sound, we’ll cultivate a deep sense of relaxation to support the nervous system in finding balance. Voice/Guitar/Songwriting Lessons: Beginner/Intermediate (15+): Mondays, starting Jan. 27 @ 4-5pm Windsor Park Library Join award winning song-writer Javier Jara for voice, guitar and songwriting lessons. Skills addressed: left and right hand technique, chords, arpeggios, strumming patterns, vocal technique, and songwriting approaches. Please bring your own guitar. Pre-registration required. Guitar Lessons (15+): Tuesdays, starting January 28 George Washington Carver Museum Beginner 1:45-2:15pm Intermediate 2:45-3:30pm Join accomplished musician Mauricio Callejas for guitar lessons for beginners (finger placement, strumming, sight- reading) and intermediate (chord progressions, ear training, reading sheet music) students. Will Clinic: Saturday, February 1 @ 9am-3pm Hardie Alcozer Law Firm Our goal is to help community members create basic wills, ensuring their wishes are legally documented and their families are protected. We want to help individuals gain peace of mind about their estate planning. Pre-registration required by January 24. Film Screening-A Most Beautiful Thing: Thursday, February 6 @ 6-8:30pm George Washington Carver Museum As part of the Carver Museum "That's My Face" Special Edition, this film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team (many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago), all coming together to row in the same boat. Based on the memoir by Arshay Cooper. Youth and Family Education Fiestas y Recuerdos Youth Art Exhibit Visit the exhibit webpage and share it with anyone who has young artists at home or works with kids! Parents, teachers, guardians, etc. should use the online form to submit photographs of youth artwork by January 31, 2025. The exhibit is expected to go live and available to view on February 12, 2025. Drawings, paintings, photos- any student artwork! Sábados en Familia The Education Team hosted their last “Sábados en Familia” event of 2025 at the Windsor Park Branch Library, where they read ‘Twas Nochebuena and created Poinsettia windsocks with 37 participants. Join them on January 11th at 12:00 PM at the Twin Oaks Branch Library, as they read "Sana Sana Colita de Rana" by Citali Reyes. In this story, after suffering a boo-boo while playing with her brother and her plush sidekick, Mister Rana, Tina's dream of becoming a great wrestler is put to the test. Her injury leads her to question her aspirations, especially since her brother believes that girls aren’t meant to be good wrestlers. However, Tina will discover that with a little love and a touch of "sana, sana, colita de rana," girls can accomplish anything! Participants can create their own luchador masks at this event! CIS After School Program The Communities in Schools Afterschool Program wrapped up the year by celebrating Las Posadas. The Education Team provided treats, snacks, and organized a piñata for the after-school participants. Spring programming will resume on January 13th. Lending Library In December, the Lending Library program visited the Northwest and Pan Am Recreation Centers. Participants learned about repujado and weaving, as well as holiday traditions like Posadas and Nochebuena. The Education Team will visit Givens and Montopolis Recreation Centers in January. Spring Break and Summer Camp Registration “Siembra” Spring Break Camp and “Raices” Summer Camp registration is just around the corner! All Summer Camp information can be found at the PARD’s Summer Camp webpage. Camps are for students 5-12 years old. Spring Break Camp “Siembra” Spring Break camp registration will begin on Saturday, February 8th, at 10:00 am. The dates for Siembra Spring Break Camp are March 17, 18, 19, 20, 21. It’s a one-week camp. The fee is $140 for residents, $220 for non-residents. Summer Camp “Raices” Registration will begin on February 22nd at 10:00 am. *Families qualifying for financial aid will have early registration access starting February 1st. The Raices Summer Camp is divided into 3 3-week sessions: Session 1- 6/9 – 6/27 Session 2- 6/30 – 7/18 Session 3- 7/21 – 8/8 NEW THIS YEAR FOR THE ESB MACC: FREE SUMMER CAMP DROP-IN DAYS! At the end of the Summer Camp season, the ESB MACC will offer 3 free drop-in days: Monday, 8/11 Tuesday, 8/12 Wednesday, 8/13 Ages: 5-12 Years Old. Slots are limited on a DAILY first come first served basis. You can choose what days to join according to your schedule. Drop by when convenient for you. Pre-registration does not guarantee your spot, just ensures you can have a quicker drop off the days that you attend. Academia Cuauhtli Bilingual Education Program Academia Cuauhtli is thrilled to kick off a new semester featuring Danza Mexica, led by Maestra Rosa Tupina Yaotonalcuauhtli. Classes will run from 9am-12pm every Saturday from January 25 to February 22 at Sanchez Elementary. We’ve also planned an exciting field trip to the Tanko Institute and the ICI Summer Youth Encounter on February 1st to further explore Indigenous-based youth programs in Central Texas. Caminos Teen Leadership Program Students in the Caminos Teen Leadership Program visited the Blanton Museum and enjoyed learning about Latino artists. Caminos started work on the Pocket Park located across the street from the Mexican American Cultural Center alongside artist Miguel Santana who is their mentor for this project. For the holidays, the Caminos Teens hosted their own posada sharing traditional dishes from each of their own cultures including Taiwanese, Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, Mexican and African foods. They also learned the history behind posadas and the traditional pinatas and why they were made with 7 cones.
