Caminos Teen Leadership Program Outreach and Marketing Mexic-Arte Ofrenda Exhibit- “Path to the Altar” Exhibition Dates: Sep. 27, 2024 - Jan. 5, 2025 Mexic-Arte Museum’s Fall Day of the Dead exhibit is now open for viewing. This ofrenda was created collectively by ESB MACC staff at Mexic-Arte, drawing inspiration from altar styles in Mexico as well as U.S. inter The marigold archways reflects altar traditions in Michoacan, and we were also inspired by the light blue colors found in Mary Andrade’s altar in the photograph that hangs to the right of the altar. The objects on the altar contribute to this Mexican-American style altar that includes both Pre-Columbian references and modern ones in like Miguel from Coco and Lucha Libre. The altar includes photographs and short biographies of the following individuals who have passed away: Emma S. Barrientos (1942–2009) Socorro Chapa (1954-2023), MACC employee Adelita Treviño Diaz (1953 - 2022), MACC employee Mary Ann Vaca Lambert (1956-2022), MACC & DAC employee Jonathan Jamerson (Passed in 2015), MACC employee Shorty Ortiz (1922 - 2020), Musician Anthony Ortiz Jr. (1993 - 2017), Musician José Francisco Treviño (1941- 2022), Artist & Collector Carlos Piñeda (1939 - 2009), DAC employee Sam Coronado (1946 - 2013), Artist & Serigraphy Teacher Raul Salinas (1934 - 2008), Poet & Writer Paul Hernandez (1946-2020), Activist Ishmael Soto (1932 - 2017), Art Professor Manuel “Cowboy” Donley (1927 - 2020), Musician The altar is on display and available to view during Mexic-Arte’s gallery hours until January 5th, 2025. As many as 70 participants showed up to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month at Austin Public Library. Some families came from as far as Hutto and Houston, TX! Library staff curated a unique all ages display of books on lowrider culture from Austin Public Library's collection for this event. We were honored to be joined by local Austin lowrider legend John Colunga (who most recently had a lowrider on exhibit at the Bullock Museum last month). He and his crew brought out a whole fleet of lowriders! Both adults and children were delighted by the opportunity to view a colorful dazzling array of lowriders up close in the Cepeda Branch parking lot. By the time families made their way indoors, all were fired-up to make and adorn their own lowrider paper models. The event was enriched by a music performance by the Bronze Band. Local musicians Robert Ojeda and his band played a lively set of songs that reflected historical influences upon Mexican American music today. Esteemed local Austin artist Alonso Estrada premiered a towering custom art installation piece as an ode to lowrider art and culture. It will remain on exhibit through October 15th. It serves as a remarkable symbol of belonging for the Latinx and Mexican American community at the Cepeda Branch Library in East Austin. Tribute to Manuel Cowboy Donley September 28, 6-9 p.m., Parque Zaragoza, East Austin This tribute was a collaboration between The Donley Family, the ESB-MACC, the Austin Tejano Music Coalition, and was produced by Christopher Michael Mares Mendoza. It was a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Manuel "Cowboy" Donley, featuring performances by musicians, including family members, honoring his remarkable musical arrangements. Senator Gonzalo Barrientos was a part of this event. Trio Los Vigilantes also performed. It was a wonderful evening of Tejano music outside in East Austin.
