Holistic Wellness Programming HWP July: Chair Yoga: 3rd Friday of each month @ 10:30am (Attendance: 4) Yarborough Library A gentle form of yoga that can be done while seated in a chair. These modifications make yoga accessible to people with various physical abilities. Cooking Demo: Healthy Snacks (15+): Wednesday, July 17 @ 6-7:30pm (Attendance: 14) Central Library - Demo Area/Kitchen Learn how to make delicious and nutritious sweet n’ salty snacks - Chili Lime Popcorn, Sweet Plantain Chips and Watermelon Agua Fresca - using products found at your local grocery store. Book Club: Leemos y Plática: Tuesdays @ 6-7:30pm Sept 10: Ruiz Branch Library, 78741 Sept 17: Menchaca Branch Library, 78745 Sept 24: Cepeda Branch Library, 78702 Join our comunidad of readers to discuss “I Am Diosa: A Journey to Healing Deep, Loving Yourself, and Coming Back Home to Soul.” This book was the inspiration for our “The Diosa Energy Within” Exhibit held at Ruiz Library. We’ll share our thoughts and discuss the themes that resonate with us. Book is available in both English and Spanish. Cepeda, Ruiz, and Menchaca Libraries Cosecha Summer Camp Youth and Family Education The Education team is wrapping up Cosecha Summer Camp. We have enjoyed hosting all our participants at the Asian American Resource Center. Our participants explored themes such as Social Justice and performing arts! During Cosecha Session 8 (7/22-7/26) which was themed “La Estrella - Latin Artists”, the students explored music. Students learned local musical history with Delia Perez Meyer. During Cosecha Session 9 (7/29-8/2) the theme was “El Luchador”, so our participants created luchador masks, promo pictures, and performed stage fights. They took inspiration from luchadores such as El Santo and Las Cholitas from Peru. As we reach the end of summer and send our campers back to school, we look back and reflect on the experiences and enrichment activities we provided to educate young people in Mexican American and Latino cultural arts. Academia Cuauhtli Bilingual Education Program Summer Camp: Aztech Kidz Code Aztech Kidz Code bilingual STEM and arts focused summer camp is nearing wrap up of its last session with the last cohort of children. Here's a peek of some recent activities incorporated into the camp. Youth participated in their own reenactment of the 2024 Olympics redesigned to be culturally inclusive. Participants created artistic emblems and insignias representative of cultural ancestry and then cheered each other on in sporting activities on the school site's outdoor track. Participants have also gone on field trips. The most recent was to the LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections at UT where children were able to see an actual Aztec codex manuscript book. Aztech Kidz Code is nearing wrap up of it's last session with the last cohort of children. A graduation ceremony is set for Saturday, August 10th at Mendez Middle School from 9:00 - 12 PM. It will include a gallery showing of the children's art work, demos of the STEM coding curriculum, and a special performance in the auditorium by all the youth. Caminos Teen Leadership Program Caminos Mentors have been helping with Hillside event providing activities to families. Hillside activities included kite making, bubbles, coloring sheets, mini paintings, and temporary tattoos! The Caminos documentary short is available to watch on Youtube! This video was created by Jana Birchum, who recorded the teens as they led their annual "Breaking Barriers" workshop in April 2024. The documentary examines the ways that the Caminos program brings teens together through community outreach and connecting to Latino/a/e culture through music and dance. The film features interviews with participants and coordinators of the program. Our Caminos graduates have gone on to be graphic designers, event producers, activity specialists, Summer camp leaders, and more! We are excited to have Caminos grads Juliana and Melaney joining us as “senderistas” who are graduates of the program who stay on to mentor the future class. Get ready to welcome the new class of Caminos! Caminos has completed their final rounds of interviews for the 24-25 Caminos Class at the end of July. We have extended offers to the top candidates to join Caminos and we are excited to onboard them soon! Outreach Events (Past): Outreach and Marketing Outreach tabling at the Long Center on Thursday evenings has been a great way to promote our upcoming programs. We promoted the Guelaguetza which is the annual end-of-year performance by Ballet Folklorico of Austin at the Long Center on July 27.cJoin the free Long Center’ “Drop In” on the final concert of the series on Thursday, August 15th to see Bidi Bidi Banda! The MACC will be offering Selena- themed children’s activities. Then catch the MACC’s outreach table on Sept 7 and Sept 21! Rainey Street Trailhead On July 13, the MACC joined the Trail Foundation for the Rainey Street Trailhead opening. The newly renovated trailhead at 36 East Avenue includes a 10,250 square-foot main lawn, Nature-based playscape, Multi-use floating dock, Shaded seating areas, and enhanced lighting. Radio & News On July 25, Olivia and Florentino did a KOOP Radio interview about Austin Museum Day, which is on September 22, 2024. On July 23, Olivia did a KOYE Radio promo with Joe Morales to announce Pan Am Hillside. On July 18, Olivia did a live interview with CBS- We Are Austin about the Hillside Summer Concer Series with Janie Balderas, who is performing on August 6th On July 27, Olivia did an interview with Fox 7- Good Day Austin about the Guelaguetza! Formal Introduction to the Mexican Consulate Macc staff met with the new Mexican Consulate Humberto Hernández Haddad on July 17th. Michelle, Estrella and Olivia were able to make introductions and tell the Consul and his staff about the MACC. They discussed the possibility of future collaborations and make a formal invitation for the Consul to present the Grito de Independencia at Viva Mexico on September 14th. We are excited to welcome the new Consul! Thank you’s go out to the Pan Am staff, MC Senator Gonzalo Barrientos, community member and volunteer support and the MACC staff. This long lasting community event is a testament to the strong cultural ties of Tejano/Conjunto/Cumbia music and the families and residents of East Austin. The workshop series focuses upon advancing music literacy reading skills as well as individual self-expression in the genre of Mexican American music. Participants learn about the roots and rhythms present in the great expanse of what makes up Mexican American music today - including orquesta, conjunto, cumbia, mariachi, and much more! Most importantly, the Bronze Band teaches the inherent power in the act of simply picking up an instrument. To play the music grounded in one's diverse cultural heritage is an act of empowerment, no matter one's skill level in their journey as a musician. It is an art form for all to claim as their own. Participants will get to enjoy 4 more upcoming sessions (out of a total of 6 for the summer). Tribute to Manuel Cowboy Donley September 28, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Location: Parque Zaragoza, East Austin This tribute is a collaboration between The Donley Family, the ESB-MACC, the Austin Tejano Music Coalition, and is produced by Christopher Mares. This project has been financed in whole or in part by the City of Austin’s Live Music Fund Event Program. Join us for a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Manuel "Cowboy" Donley, featuring performances by musicians, including family members, honoring his remarkable musical arrangements. We invite the public to come and celebrate the memory and music of Manuel "Cowboy" Donley. Bring coolers, chairs, and shade tents! Event Highlights • Performance: A two-hour set with a short intermission. • Family Memories: Sylvia, Phillip, and Lupe Donley will share memories and perform songs they performed with their father, along with the orchestra featuring Donley's own arrangements for horns. There will be a special appearance by Trio Los Vigilantes and Kim Simpson. There will be a 12-Piece Orchestra featuring various horn musicians who played with Donley, including: Felipe "Tiburon" Borrero: Heading up the horn section, Jerry Silva: Special appearance from one of Donley's Estrellas. Horn Section: Featuring Donley's traditional lineup of an alto sax, tenor sax, and two trumpets. Parks & Recreation News Welcome Marjorie Flanagan as the new Division Manager of Museums and Cultural Programs. Marjorie joined PARD from the Texas State University System as the first Director of Public Art, prior to that role she spent nearly six years with the City of Austin's Art in Public Places Program in the Economic Development Department. She managed the largest public art piece in the City's collection to date from project inception through installation. The piece, entitled Meander Wings, by NY based artist THEVERMANY, installed during the pandemic at AUS. Ask her about it! Marjorie will oversee PARD's Museums and Cultural Programs as Division Manager. With experience in both public and private sectors, her passion remains in delivering quality arts and culture experiences to the community. Her background includes degrees from LSU (Geaux Tigers) and UT Austin so she looks forward to college football season. Marjorie spends most of her "free" time with her two amazing children, dog Goldie Locks and working in her vegetable garden.
