Thanks to everyone who attended our events, shared information about the MACC, gave their feedback in meetings, collaborated, and followed us to new locations in 2023. Holistic Wellness Programming Yoga for All Levels: Saturday, December 9 @ 10:30am (Attendance: 7) George Morales Dove Springs Recreation Center Body, mind and soul will align as we move with intention through gentle movement guided by breath. We will incorporate meditation to regulate the nervous system. Gentle Flow Yoga (8+): Saturday, December 2 @ 10:30am (Attendance: 2) Windsor Park Library – 1st class at this location Voice/Guitar/Songwriting Lessons Intermediate (15+): Mondays, Dec 4 & 11 @ 4-5pm (Attendance: 11) Windsor Park Library Join award winning song-writer Javier Jara for voice, guitar and songwriting lessons. Skills addressed: left and right hand technique, chords, arpeggios, strumming patterns, vocal technique, and songwriting approaches. Guitar Lessons (15+): Beginner: 2-2:30pm (Attendance: 8). Intermediate: 2:45-3:15pm (Attendance: 5). Tuesdays, Dec 5 & 12 @ Twin Oaks Library Join accomplished musician Mauricio Callejas for guitar lessons for beginners (finger placement, strumming, sight- reading) & intermediate (chord progressions, ear training, reading sheet music) students. Please bring your own guitar. First Annual Tamalada: Saturday, December 2 @ 1:30-5pm (Attendance: 88) Conley-Guerrero Recreation Center On Saturday, December 2, the ESB MACC hosted a “Tamalada”, a tamale making event at the Austin Central Library. The event included cooking demonstrations, tastings, recipe sharing, and corn husk doll making. There were sessions at 1:30 and 3:00pm, with 51 at the first session and 40 participants in the second session. All attendees enjoyed learning about this Mexican tradition of coming together to make tamales during the holiday season. Taller Abierto: Painting/Drawing Workshop (15+): December 7th @ 10-11:30am (Attendance: 11) George Morales Dove Springs Recreation Center Art classes for all levels led by art instructor Miguel Santana. Includes both art history and exploration of different techniques. All materials provided! Nature Hike: Sunday, December 10 @ 9am (Attendance: 12 ) Sunset Valley Community Garden A beginner friendly hike led by Latino Outdoors. Please dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather and bring a water bottle. Pre-registration required by Thursday, December 7. Drumming Lessons: 2nd Saturday of each month @ 3pm (Attendance: 8), Windsor Park Library 2nd Sunday of each month @ 1pm (Attendance: 6) George Morales Dove Springs Recreation Center Learn to play drums influenced by West African, Afro-Latin and contemporary styles. Class starts with a movement warm up, then use drums, bells, and shakers to learn basic rhythms and play as a group. Drums provided - feel free to bring your own drum or percussion instrument. Cooking Demo: Carb Conscious (15+): Wednesday, December 13 @ 6-7:30pm (Attendance: 2) Central Library - Demo Area/Kitchen Learn how to make a delicious and nutritious meal with clever and creative substitutions to reduce the carbohydrate load, using products found at your local grocery store. Tastings are included! Nature Hike: Sunday, December 10 @ 9am Sunset Valley Community Garden A beginner friendly hike led by Latino Outdoors. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes and bring a water bottle. Holistic Wellness Programming: Upcoming Cooking Demo: Vegan (15+): Wednesday, January 17, 2024 @ 6- 7:30pm Central Library - Demo Area/Kitchen A vegan diet excludes meat, dairy, and all foods derived from animals. You will learn how to make a quick and healthy meal using products found at your local grocery store. Tastings are included! On the menu: Sweet Potato, Corn & Black Bean Tacos. Pre-registration required. Family Yoga: 1st Saturday of each month @ 12pm George Morales Dove Springs Recreation Center A space for kids and their adult to practice yoga together. Youth and Family Education The Lending Library program was hosted at the Montopolis Recreation Center. They lead MACC-tivity Time and did activities such as Lowriders, Repujado, and mini murals. They had about 40 of the Montopolis after school participants attend. This month, the education team will offer Capoeira at Virginia L. Brown Recreation Center, and MACC-tivity Time at the Northwest Recreation Center. Sábados en Familia provides bilingual story time and hands-on activities at Austin Central Library every month on the second Saturday. It’s free and open to the public, no registration necessary. Families can bring children of all ages. On December 2, the Education team read Atzi’s Flowers for Sabados en Famila. They had 95 people in attendance and made poinsettia paper flowers while learning about the history of the poinsettia flower. The next Sabados en Familia will be January 13th, at the Central Public Library. They will be reading Bright Star (or Lucero in Spanish) by Yuyi Morales. This book explores the plants, animals, and people that live in the deserts of the borderlands. Participants will make a clay cactus plant and decorate a paper cup to plant it in. Community in Schools wrapped up the year on December 14th. The MACC Education team celebrated the winter break with the SmartKids doing activities such as slackline, science experiments, and magic sand. They will return on January 16th, after the MLK holiday. The Education Specialist and Coordinator, Erik and Eufemia, hosted a winter holiday celebration for the Education staff. The team had a Posada at the DAC where they spent time together, had snacks, and broke a pinata. Caminos Teen Leadership Program The Caminates finished their Zines for the semester. Every event they worked and for the field trips they attended this semester, they created a Zine to help showcase what stood out to them the most and use their art skills. Caminos continues to meet at Austin Central Library on Saturdays. Follow @ATXCAMINOS on Instagram and check out their blog! . Caminantes finished the semester with a holiday event on December 16th. They brought Venezuelan, Honduran, Puerto Rican, Mexican and Tejano dishes to share and celebrate their diverse Latino/x roots. Academia Cuauhtli Bilingual Education Program Academia Cuauhtli concluded the year with our final field trip to the Blanton Museum. Students had the opportunity to explore various expressions of identity and connect them to their teachings at Cuauhtli. Additionally, on December 9th, we wrapped up the semester with an end-of-year celebration featuring tamales and atole! Spring semester starts on Saturday, January 27th, ending on March 9th. The program meets on 9am - 12pm at Sanchez Elementary. We are thrilled to begin classes which will predominantly focus on Danza Mexica workshops with Rosa and her Kalpulli Toekalli Teoyolotl. Outreach and Marketing December 9th Dove Springs Library Noche de Fiesta The MACC led loteria, nochebuena flowers, and ornament making at the Dove Springs Community Library. The event included mariachis and a visit from snowman Olaf! December 10th Ballet Folklorico of Austin -Mitote The MACC provided a fun table of information on MACC programming at Ballet Folklorico’s holiday performance at the Long Center. We had giveaways and did ornament making. December 16th Ballet Folklorico of Austin- Posada The MACC was a sponsor of the Ballet Folklorico of Austin’s annual Posada on December 16th. We provided ornament making and paper nochebuena flower making. The event was in Dale, Texas. We are attending the Youth Career Fest on January 24th at Palmer Events Center to promote our youth programs and Summer job opportunities. Signature Event Dates 2024 Apr. 20, 2024 - ESB MACC: La Mujer. Location TBA. Jul. 29, 2024 - ESB MACC: Awards of Excellence. Location: Long Center Kodosky Lounge. Sep. 14, 2024 - ESB MACC: Viva Mexico. Location: Pan Am Recreation Center. Oct. 26, 2024 - ESB MACC: Dia De Los Muertos Location: Pan Am Recreation Center. Thanks to the Pan Am Rec Center staff for hosting Viva Mexico and Dia de los Muertos and to the Long Center for hosting Awards of Excellence! Meeting on Saturday, January 13 at 1:00pm at the Asian American Resource Center. Music Hub Meeting Hosted by EQ Austin, this meeting will provide a discussion on each cultural center meeting held previously and include the results of the focus groups; assessment of the local artists community’s needs; assessment of the facility and its assets; recommendations and cost estimates of buildout of physical space, equipment needs, and programming opportunities. The purpose of this project is to develop creative industries business incubators focused on the development of entrepreneurs in music, film/video, and creative industry-focused technologies at the three PARD cultural centers: MACC, Carver, AARC. The music hub could potentially provide underserved local musicians and artist communities with resources to perform, rehearse, live stream, and record. It could also provide the artists with assistance in business development, marketing and other entrepreneurial needs. Staffing Updates Welcome, Andrea! Andrea Olivates is our new Public Event Leader and began her position in the first week of December. She will be assisting with logistics and production support for our events and activities. She will also work closely with the other cultural center production teams to learn about our spaces and the communities we serve. “Hello everyone, I'm Andrea Olivares, your new Public Event Leader! I was born and raised in McAllen, TX. I came to Austin in 2018 to study International Business at UT where I discovered my passion for live events. My responsibilities as Public Event Leader will vary from reading and setting stage/seating diagrams, to operating technical equipment, and even providing assistance to help answer visitor/client inquiries. Beyond logistics and production support, I'm excited to create engaging experiences that resonate with our diverse community.” New Job Posting: THE MACC is hiring an Event Coordinator! https://www.austincityjobs.org/postings/115060. Please apply before 1/22/2024. Pay Range: $26.26 – $31.45 per hour. This position provides oversight and logistical support for major programs and rentals. This will involve planning, managing and executing internal events and programs and coordinating rentals of the theaters, meeting rooms, and outdoor spaces. The Event Coordinator should have a strong background in event production and technical theater- overseeing lighting and sound equipment. 2023 Reporting & Evaluation At the end of January, we will be releasing an “End of Year Report” that highlights some of our major programs and events in 2023. As part of the report, we will also link a survey to gather feedback from the community about what programs and events the MACC community wants to see in 2024-2025. You can find these Surveys at www.MaccSurvey.Net and we will be sending the link in our next newsletter, sharing the survey on our social media accounts @ESBMACC, and in the End of Year Report. We will have opportunities for the public to fill it out at our Outreach tables as well. This survey is ongoing.
