MACC Staff Report – 12/7/22 Website - Facebook - Virtual Programs SIGNATURE EVENT: Dia de los Muertos WWW.DAYOFTHEDEADATX.NET Nov 2- Presentation of the Altars- An intimate, culturally rooted celebration that emphasized the ofrendas (altars). 300 people attended including a group of Latino veterans, neighbors, and community elders. -Altar presentation by Mariana Nuño Ruiz McEnroe, author of the book Dining with the Dead -Limpias by Marika Alvarado, Lipan Apache healer -Performance by Austin Samba -Over 200 AVA art kits by help heal veterans/ Austin Veterans Arts Fest -Photography portraits by Roj Rodriguez -Free hot chocolate, pan de muerto, tamales -Many attendees brought notes, flowers, photocopies of photographs to add to the collective altar Nov 5, Large Scale Festival – A well-attended (3200 people!) multidisciplinary event with visual and performing arts. Live music and dance performances by El Combo Oscuro, Conjunto Los Oinkys with Susan Torres, Sergio Guerrero Family Tribute Band, Danza Azteca Guadalupana, Ballet Folklorico de Austin. Signature Event: Dia de los Muertos In-person program Lessons taught: Sugar skull kits / sugar skull decorating • • Edu staff: 6 • • Total number of participants served: 1000 • Total number of Kits: 300 • Total number of participants at DDLM sugar skull station: 700 MACC Lending Library: • Continued dates: Planning phase • Start date: January 16, 2022 • All kits will be distributed top of each month Camps Tours • Pre-planning phase. • Hiring is currently in conversation / recruitment will estimate is February • ESB-MACC Cosecha, youth summer camp location for 2023: Asian American Resource Center • Total of 6 tours • Total number of participants served: 200 LAAP: Bilingual Yoga (Saturdays @10am) 20 Attendees: Sana Yoga provides a pathway for healing with equitable and accessible programming, while organizing to reduce systemic factors that negatively impact mental health, physical health and social well-being amongst our Latinx community and other marginalized communities. Past: Healing Garden Transplant Day and Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon (Sun, Nov. 13) 16 Attendees: The MACC Healing Garden moved to Sunset Valley Community Garden in preparation for the MACC closure. Volunteers helped us transplant our plants and herbs to the new location, then enjoyed tacos from Taqueria Morales. ¡Escándalo! — The Improvised Telenovela! (Sat, Nov. 12 @8pm) 36 Attendees: The cast of the B. Iden Payne Award- winning ¡Escándalo! weaved together a brand new, never- before-seen, never-to-be-seen-again passion-filled telenovela based on audience suggestions for a fun-filled evening of comedy and drama. Upcoming: La Pastorela (Dec 8-18, 2pm/7pm): Teatro Vivo is proud to present La Pastorela 2022: An Interactive Theatre Experience! This year’s production of La Pastorela will be unlike any you have seen before! Join us as we center our comunidad. This bilingual production opens with a welcome from our featured actors who will share a history of the Pastorela tradition, and invite audiences to use their talents to create gifts to offer during the performance. Audience members will have a chance to participate in a dance, song, spoken word, create a work of visual art, or simply observe. There will be plenty of humor and heart as we turn the lights on YOU, nuestra comunidad, and celebrate the warmth of the holidays as they were meant to be: together, juntos. Ballet Folklorico de Austin (Sat, Dec 10 at 10:30am): Our LAAP artist will be featured at the George Morales Dove Spring Recreation Center Holiday Event taking place from 10-12pm. Iden Payne Award-winning ¡Escándalo! for an evening of comedy and drama as they weave together a brand new, never-before-seen, never-to-be-seen-again passion-filled telenovela based on audience suggestions. .CAMINOS BOARD REPORT 11/2022: the Caminos Teen Leadership In November, Interns completed their 3rd month of their 10-month long internship with us. Here are some of the things they accomplished: ● Face Painting activities for Dia De Los Muertos Festival at the MACC ● Helped set up chairs and decorations for Dia De Los Muertos Festival ● Aided with altar exhibition at the MACC ● Learned how to use traditional calligraphy ink with Miguel Santana ● Began our individual projects: ○ Axolotl comic strips for the ESB-MACC in 2023 ○ Production of the Keep Austin Weird Magazine by Caminos Magazine to be Published in the Spring ○ Pre-production for an Interview series for the MACC featuring our employees ○ Paper flower bouquet activities for other Teens ○ Short film pre-production On other Programming News: ● TALLER ABIERTO FREE ART CLASSES continued to be hosted twice per month (first Fri. and Sat. of the month). This is a very popular and completely free Art class by our Art Instructor Miguel Angel Santana.
