MACC Staff Report – Feb 2, 2022 Website - Facebook - Digital Programs EVENTS- 2021 Posada Navideña December 15, 2021 Ballet Folklorico de Austin (LAAP) co-hosted this event for families, 300+ attendees enjoyed tamales, hot chocolate, piñatas, and children’s activities all outside on the Zocalo. La Pastorela December 9-19, 2021 Teatro Vivo’s longest running production, a modern retelling of the traditional Christmas story. This play took place inside the auditorium, capacity was reduced to allow for social distancing. 8 total shows over 2 weekends, 400+ attendees! Figuralo Student Art Exhibit- December 11, 2021- January 15, 2022 Youth artwork of all genres submitted by Austin-area art teachers, and individual families. Opening reception on Saturday, Dec 11 included free art activity kits, hot cocoa outside, and student interviews. Taller Abierto December 3, 2021. Upcoming: Feb 18 (virtual) Artist and teacher Miguel Santana taught a bilingual painting class, free of charge, to adults in a step-by-step follow along instructional class. Materials are provided free of charge for this series which continues into 2022. REGISTER HERE! Education -After School classes (20 students, in collaboration with Communities in Schools) January 19, 2022 - May 17, 2022 at Santa Rita Courts. -Art Activity kits created by the MACC, distributed to recreation centers as a “lending library” -Summer Camp early registration for Austin residents who have financial aid will begin on February 5 and continue to Feb 18. The Summer Camp will run from June 6th – August 12. Cost is $120 per week. Latino Artist Access Program (LAAP) -In-person meetings held Thurs, Dec 2 and virtually on Jan 27th. Next: Feb 24th 6pm. -Escandalo Improv Show (Feb 19th @ 8pm): Escandalo returns to the MACC for their first improv show of the new year. -Healing Hearts: Behind the Curtain (Feb 26th @ 2pm): Healing Hearts series returns with an in-person panel of LAAP artists discussing their artistic vision. -Healing Garden Workday (Feb 27th @ 11am): Our first volunteer garden workday of the new year. EVENTS- 2022 Caminos Teen Leadership Program -Caminantes have been continuing to meet virtually. -They have assisted at our events in the evenings and weekends -Producing LatinArte web series including cooking segments, art reviews, panel discussions, interviews. -Breaking Barriers Latinx Teen Conference will be Saturday, March 5. -Caminos is an official presenter at SXSW EDU! Exhibits -Joe Garcia, East Austin painter, will have the next in-person exhibit in the Community Gallery, Feb 7-March 31. *Opening reception for Joe Garcia is Monday, Feb 14th. -Manuel Miranda’s virtual exhibit and all other virtual exhibits are free to view online, visit WWW.MACCDIGITAL.NET. Current Program Planning -Ongoing assessment of programs that can go virtual while we are in Stage 5. -New collaboration with Austin Samba to host outdoor practices on Wednesdays -Proceeding with LAAP rehearsals and public rentals outdoors. Limited use of indoors to ensure social distancing. Encourage mask wearing- free. MACCnifico- Spring Music Showcase Over three days, the MACC will showcase local musicians and performing artists who contribute to Austin’s diverse Latinx art community, inviting the public to celebrate the biggest week of live music in Austin. With live music, food trucks, on-site activations, and special guests, it will be a “magnificent” display of Austin’s Latinx culture, so in other words, “MACC-nifico”! The goal for this event is to inform the public about the MACC and what we do, produce a free event for Austin’s Latino/a/x community, and give visibility to local Latino/a/x bands. Thurs, March 17: LAAP Artists · Friday, March 19: Tejano Artists · Saturday, March 18: Latino Artists Program Planning for Phase 2 -We plan to continue our normal on-site programming up through the Day of the Dead (Nov 1) then switch to off-site programming for the rest of construction. We plan to partner with local organizations, parks, schools, community centers, to host our programs and also offer them digitally. Great opportunity for more direct outreach in the community, bringing programs to underserved neighborhoods.
