REGULAR MEETING of the LGBTQ QUALITY OF LIFE ADVISORY COMMISSION Monday, July 8, 2024 at 7:00 P.M. Public comment will be allowed in-person or remotely via telephone. Speakers may only register to speak on an item once, either in-person or remotely, and will be allowed up to three minutes to provide their comments. Registration no later than noon the day before the meeting is required for remote participation by telephone. Motion by Commissioner Benson, Seconded by Commissioner Anderson, to approve the minutes of the Commission’s Regular Meeting on June 10, 2024, passed unanimously by roll call vote. 2. Briefing on the LGPOA Conference from Sergeant Michael Wilmore-Crumrine from the Austin 3. Briefing on Monkey Pox from Isbel Cantu, Mpox/Flu Program Coordinator from Austin Public APPROVAL OF MINUTES STAFF BRIEFINGS Police Department. Health. DISCUSSION ITEMS working group. 4. Updates from the Community and Communication working group and the chair selection for the Commissioner Anderson is chair of the working group. Working group to present update at next meeting in August. DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEMS 5. Approve a recommendation from the New Commissioner Working group for a nomination to Page 2 of 4 the commission. Tabled until next month, the working group will bring suggested applicants to the next meeting in August. 6. Approve a recommendation to the Council to conduct a feasibility study for an LGBTQIA+ Cultural Center. Motion by Commissioner Anderson Seconded by Commissioner Davis to approve a recommendation 20240708-06 Feasibility Task Force for an LGBTQIA+ Cultural Center passed unanimously by roll call vote. 7. Approve a working group for Austin's PRIDE Month and PRIDE-associated events and planning schedule. Tabled until next month. for a strategic planning meeting. 8. Discussion of the commission's next area of focus and short and long-term goals and set a date Round robin of potential strategic direction and focus of the commission: • Focus on increasing inclusion of POC in community events. • Protect the community from potential hate crimes in queer spaces and events. • Designated queer shelter and community center. Making housing more accessible to the community. • Accommodating queer unhoused people, in a gender binary shelter system. • Creating pathways to homeownership for queer people who may be low-income. • Healthcare budget to support APH & our queer community, disability Justice • Better reaching our community quicker with real-time updates to laws, resources, and information for the community. Need to be able to mobilize the community quickly. • Make sure the City is using the full LGBTQIA+ name of our community. • LGBTQIA+ Cultural Center, a central gathering place, for information, housing, healthcare, and other resources • Making sure core safety services, Fire, Police, EMS, Austin Water, and Austin Energy and functioning and well prepared for emergencies like Winter Storm Uri. A special called meeting for August 19th at 6 pm. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS New Cultural Center working group ADJOURNMENT The chair adjourned at 9:14 PM.
