I appreciate your non-partisan effort to prevent gerrymandering to favor any candidate (gerrymandering doesn't have to favor a member of a political party...I guess my neighbor didn't remember details from government class, but that was a long time ago for most of us.) Attached is my homework assignment. Power to the people, Sally Baulch CAUTION: This email was received at the City of Austin, from an EXTERNAL source. Mark their locations with points on the map. Then, draw a circle around the unique characteristics of the community that you believe should remain intact within the district. You may also leave written comments below that explain your reasoning, as well as any other thoughts about redistricting in Austin generally. Please return this document to the Commission when you are finished. It will be saved for the purpose of redrawing maps once Census data arrives. Thank you for being with us today. Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission Sally BaulchThat being said, I also like sharing a council member with nearby neighborhoods so that our neighborhoods can elevate a local issue with a member's staff. I support a more compact districtbecause I do feel that we are spread a bit thin encompassing Onion Creek Country Club. If we cross amajor boundary like I-35, then we should share a geographic feature (like Williamson Creek)rather than a socio-economic trait.I live in block 454 below Ben White Boulevard/71. I work in 78741. I volunteer with my local park. (such as with a high school or a GAVA 78744/45) so that we have more supporting voices in council. As a member of community groups, I've learned to value being split between multiple council membersSally Baulch4AustinTexas78745Name:_____________________________________ Public Forum #10: District 5 | Aug. 17, 2021 Directions: Examine the map of the ten city council districts and provide any redistricting markings and suggestions. What schools do your children attend (pre-K, elementary, high school, private, community college, university)? How accessible is Capitol Metro bus line? What are some of the shared community spaces-shopping centers, home owners’ associations, parks, pools, etc.? Where do you go to the doctor? Where is the nearest police and fire station in your community? What are your communities shared interests- health conditions, land use, environmental conditions, and/or other issues? What are the racial and ethnic compositions, cultural identities, and households that predominantly speak a language other than English in your community? Explain the socio-economic status in your community, including but not limited to income, home-ownership and education levels. What are the shared political boundary lines from other jurisdictions in your community? To create your own proposed maps for the City of Austin, go to districtr.org. Sally BaulchParts of District 5 are exceedingly well served by grocery stores, connected to transportation, have easy access to roads, and nearby schools. Other parts are food deserts and at risk of gentrification.usually my go-tos. I drive to my office/warehouse at Riverside/71 because driving=10 minutes, bus=1.5 hours. Our schools are desegregated, but our neighborhoods are socio-stratified. Our parks are used by all.If you're close to shopping, you're close to folks living on the edge. Construction has driventhe homeless to live under the highway as pockets of wildness get built out. Some are long-haulMany state workers who moved here 10-50 years ago could not afford to at today's prices. My kids went to a title 1 elementary that no longer is...the neighborhood is changing. Of course, it always has.I rarely go north of the river on I35 or Mopac but Lamar, South 1st, Pleasant Valley, Burleson, and 183 are resistant to rules and responsibilities; some are waiting for help. We pick up a lot of trash at the park and chatwith those who need a place to be.The rate of change to Montopolis in the last five years makes '45 look like it's standing still.
