Success By 6 Family Based Ch Presented by: Gayle Yondorf Chavez Program Manager, Family Based Child Care United Way/Success By 6 Family Based Child Care Purpose The purpose of the Family Based Child Care Program of United Way/Success By 6: ● ● ● ● ● ● Recognize, support, and integrate FBCC programs as essential components of the ATX early care and education system. Partner with community organizations to build and scale infrastructure for the family based child care homes in Austin that tend to be outside of the scope of systemic programs. Ensure that FBCC programs have equitable access to materials, technical assistance, and professional development in Travis County in order to provide high quality care for children and families. Increase the number of FBCC programs that move along the continuum to a next level of regulation and quality. Build support with community partners to develop the leadership of existing providers as network specialists within their communities in order to support child care workers and parents in their role of helping young children prepare for school and life success. Bring together a broad group of stakeholders to represent the views of the community, to serve as a work group, in order to provide input to help develop strategies to recognize, support, and integrate FBCC programs as essential components of the ATX early care and education system. Work Group: Roles and Responsibilities The Role of FBCC Work Group ● ● ● ● Share information / knowledge of FBCC Be engaged in developing the FBCC strategic plan and action steps by asking questions, sharing ideas and participating throughout the process Help identify any community issues and provide ideas related to potential solutions Receive feedback from stakeholders outside the work group and serve as a link between the work group and the Community Participation ● Attend meetings on the second Monday of each month ● Be informed of the strategic plan for FBCC and provide ideas to support action steps ● Participate in planning, organizing and implementing conferences for FBCC providers ● Help communicate with providers about training and other opportunities and resources available: newsletters, calendars. ● Share your knowledge of FBCC in meetings and or workshops Click images to open links Contribution Success by 6- FBCC is the only workgroup in the area to bring together representatives from Austin Chapter of TXAYEC, Workforce Solutions-Capital Area, Austin Public Health, PBS,Texas Licensed Child Care Association, GAVA, AVANCE and local FBCC Providers. The Workgroup meets monthly to develop strategies to connect caregivers with existing professional development opportunities and encourage other organizations to include FBCC programming to provide families and caregivers with access to building and scaling infrastructure for the family-based child care homes in Austin that typically are not part of systemic programs. FBCC 2023 Community Partnerships ❏ Offered a home visiting program through GAVA (Go Austin/Vamos Austin) designed to support home-based child care providers and parents in their role of helping young children prepare for school and life success. Educational specialists will visit twice a week for 24 weeks to help train the provider and families in the program and furnish all materials, including books and educational toys. ❏ Supported home based child care providers with Quality Child Care Matters Program through AVANCE, Inc., which included a combination of strategies training, professional development, mentoring and coaching in business practices and child development. Provider Success Stories Mini Grant Recipients 2023 Click image to open links Strategic goal: Increase the number of FBCC program that move along the continuum to a next level of regulation and quality The Success By 6 Family Based Child Care Program of United Way for Greater Austin awarded $54,000* dollars in mini-grants to home-based child care providers in 2023. These funds were used to fulfill the objective of removing financial barriers to become licensed, registered, or listed by Child Care Regulation and acquire or increase a Quality Rating in the (TRS) Texas Rising Star program. Grantees were selected from Child Care Homes that care for children from families who are qualified as low income according to the Travis County Income Eligibility chart. Twenty-seven Family-Home Based Child Care Providers were awarded a $2,000 grant to help pay licensing fees, make home & safety improvements and purchase educational materials to improve the quality of their programs. Approximately 245 families and children were impacted by these mini-grants. *Grant funding was provided by St. David’s Foundation and Travis County. Second Annual FBCC Provider Conference United Way-Success By 6 Strategic Goal: Remove barriers for FBCC programs in equitably accessing programs, quality accreditations and resources through professional development opportunities and information sharing. On August 12, 2023, the Second Annual Success by 6 Travis County Family Based Child Care Conference was held with approximately 52 participants in attendance. Presentations demonstrated child care providers with strategies and age-appropriate activities to engage children with enjoyable and effective learning experiences. Additionally, the conference hosted the City of Austin Early Childhood Council Meeting, which gave council members the opportunity to interact with home- based providers and hear about their concerns and needs. This the only professional development conference in Central Texas focused on Home Based Child Care.
