Dear Members: We are seeking a variance to § 25-10-130 - COMMERCIAL SIGN DISTRICT REGULATIONS, which stipulates that a sign may not be higher than 30’ in the zoning for the above location. We hope to increase the height of our new sign to 40’. COTA strives to be a responsible contributor to the local community, and as such we are aware that our events are both beneficial and impactful to the economy and daily activities of our neighbors, from day-to-day changes in traffic to driving future growth. At the same time, recently completed improvements to Elroy Road, intended to raise the road and provide a flood evacuation route, have made this entrance to the facility more significant. The entrance sign is not only a means of identifying the property but also of communicating to our neighbors and others about events and activities that concern them. It is important that this sign is clearly seen. The surrounding topography contributes to a situation where a shorter sign will either fail to stand out on the horizon or be lost behind the roadside trees. Also, a shorter sign may prove distracting to those up close, especially now that the intersection is larger and will be busier. Raising the height of the sign will alleviate both concerns and is not a substantial deviation from the current allowance.
