Please check any of the following categories that represent your current professional and/or personal affiliation(s) Describe your interest in becoming a member of the HIV Planning Council. As someone deeply committed to public health and social justice, my interest in becoming a member of the HIV Planning Council is to contribute meaningfully in my community in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and to improve the lives of those who are HIV positive. As a public health major at UT, an EMT, and a frequent community volunteer, I have personally seen the importance of addressing the health disparities in our community and ensuring equitable access to medical care for all people. Furthermore, since HIV is a preventable and treatable disease, with the proper public health interventions it is possible to greatly decrease the incidence of HIV and prolong the life of those living with HIV. Due to this, I believe that being a member of the HIV Planning Council will allow me to be a play a part in helping to come up with actionable health interventions and that the proper medical resources and education are accessible and digestible to everybody in Austin to ensure that people know when to utilize the proper medical resources (PrEP, PEP, testing services) and how to access them to allow for the prevention of disease and timely diagnosis. I also believe that it is imperative to educate all members of our community about HIV since HIV can affect anyone and to reduce stigma of the disease which will improve the wellbeing of HIV positive individuals living in our community. The mission of the HIV Planning Council is to develop and coordinate an effective and comprehensive community-wide response to HIV.Based on your knowledge of the HIV Planning Council, what skills and experience do you have that will help support the Planning Council’s mission? As a Public Health major at UT Austin and a young person, HIV impacts my peers and community which provides me with a special perspective in my ability to serve the HIV Planning Council’s mission. Furthermore, through my coursework as a Public Health major I have a strong academic foundation of epidemiology and the social determinants that influence HIV transmission. In addition, my experience as an EMT and an ER tech has worked with HIV positive patients and intravenous drug rehab patients, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of a comprehensive community-wide response to HIV to improve the lives of people who are HIV positive. 2 / 4 Q11 Q12 Q13 Q14 Q15 Q16 Q17 Membership Application Do you have any current or previous volunteer/community service experience? In my sophomore year of high school I received a gold Presidential Service Award. In my junior year of high school I was the Key Club’s treasurer and in my senior year I was the vice president. I have carried through this service into college by volunteering for a wide range of events and organizations including at the Micah 6 food bank, Students Expanding American Literacy, and Longhorn EMS as a volunteer EMT. Currently, I am the volunteer coordinator for my women's pre-medical honor society, Kappa Rho. Please list any training and/or education related to HIV/AIDS or public health that you have received. I have been a close friend of Liza’s for several years, and I have had the privilege of seeing her grow up while watching her be the same kind, responsible, and committed young woman she was when we were younger. To me, Liza is the embodiment of the spirit of community and compassion. For as long as we have been friends, I’ve seen her regularly volunteering. In high school, she volunteered as a part of clubs but always helped for many more hours than she was required to. She is always looking for ways she can positively contribute to her community and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around her. These efforts are evident in how she participates in all philanthropic events she can and in her altruistic attitude. Her inherent kindness is apparent in how she always prioritizes the needs of others over her own. Whether it was taking care of me and our roommates when we were sick last semester or always being there for us when we needed an ear to listen to our emotional rants, Liza’s kindness and selflessness truly knows no bounds. She is the kind of person who would drop everything in a moment to ensure that the people she cares about are taken care of. On a more professional note, Liza graduated from EMT school last summer and currently works in a free-standing emergency room. I remember her being so excited about being accepted into the program after her freshman year of college, and how she spent so many hours at coffee shops studying emergency medicine so she could make sure her patients got the best care possible. She approaches her role as an EMT with such a level of commitment and passion that it almost makes me want to go into medicine. Liza changed her major last year, switching from biochemistry to public health because she believed that as a medical professional, she had to be able to understand the perspectives of all of her patients and peers. She knew that she had to have some level of knowledge of how people with certain chronic conditions live, and I believe that this makes her an ideal candidate for the HIV Planning Council. Thank you so much for considering Liza as an applicant and considering my recommendation. I am sure that Liza will contribute significantly to the HIV Planning Council. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
