By combining these two elements with the City‟s moniker “Keep Austin Weird,” THE NATURE OF SOUND is a beautifully colored visual „representation of sound‟ using plants, birds and their songs. THE NATURE OF SOUND brings to life Austin‟s nickname “A City in a Park” with three oversized brightly colored singing birds perched under colorfully painted skylights. The bird‟s songs represented by wildflowers expresses the City‟s global reputation as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” THE NATURE OF SOUND seamlessly integrates into the new space of the atrium infill area by creatively using the inside of the skylights and the space below the ceiling. The atrium is one of the the first sites a traveler will enter when checking in for a flight. THE NATURE OF SOUND can be seen from the multiple viewing locations, both outside of the atrium area and also directly below the atriums skylights. This design draws people in to flow through the new large open space to see this colorful and whimsical artwork transform and reveal new aspects of the art. As the City of Austin goes through a huge growth period with challenging changes, many locals feel the connection to nature is lost within the new infrastructure plans. There‟s a sense that “we are knocking down and rebuilding while losing our history and the country aesthetic”. The natural and musical themes along with the sophisticated colors of THE NATURE OF SOUND restores this image many are longing for by giving an uplifting message of joy and connection to nature and music. Community Engagement Findings Love for Music A high percentage of people enjoy live music. Austin is known to be the Live Music Capital of the world. There are many live music venues, much more than other cities. Love of Nature Nature is seen as an identity of Austin, nicknamed “A city in a park.” Notable mentions include its landscapes, Hill Country, Blind Salamanders, Bats, Longhorns, Bluebonnet, wildflowers. Tech vs. Rural Austin is a city trying to find its identity as it is going through a huge growth period with many changes. The connection to nature is lost with new infrastructure. There‟s a sense of knocking down and rebuilding while losing history and the country aesthetic. “Austin is Weird” People can be themselves & and also be accepting of new and weird ideas. "Keep Austin Weird" is the City's moniker. Diversity Austin‟s reputation as a multicultural city is celebrated through its food, festivals, and community events. There is an acceptance of everyone and their cultural heritage. Artwork details The principle materials used in fabrication of the Artwork (see data sheets): ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Bird, sculpt; HFP, EPS foam Bird, hard-coat; Polycoat, Polyeuro MH-751FR (this Polyurethane/resin hard-coat has an integral fire retardant). Bird, foam adhesive; Polycoat, Polyeuro MH-751FR Bird, internal structures (armatures); primed, mild steel sections (tbc). Perch (frame); primed and painted mild steel sections/plates (tbc). Perch, paint; Matthews MPC, MAP-LVS Bird/Perch/Soundwave primer; Transtar 1221/1225 Soundwave, armature; primed, mild steel Soundwave, Floral elements; Smooth-on, Habitat Cast N Coat (epoxy/resin) Soundwave, Floral elements adhesive; 3M, Scotch-Weld Mural/Bird/Soundwave paint Satin Base; Golden CPWTP, (custom paint the Artwork as per images). Mural/Bird/Soundwave paint Satin Clear; Golden MSA varnish, (applied as a protective coating). Mural cloth; Polytab Mural cloth adhesive; Golden CPWMG01-F Artwork fabrication methods: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Bird; EPS-foam blocks are 5-axis machine cut to form the sculpt/shape. The foam is hollowed out to accept the metal armature/frame which supports it. The foam parts are then bonded together over the frame, to form the finished shape, with all joints made good. Bird; A hard-coat (with integral fire retardant) is applied over the foam sculpt with the surface then worked/detailed/finished by hand. The hard-coat surface is then painted with a primer ready to accept the mural paint. Steelwork/armatures; cut/weld/dress steel tubes, primed (integrated into the sculpted birds). Perch (frame); cut/weld/dress steel tubes/sections, primed, with a single colour paint finish. Soundwave, floral elements; mold formed epoxy Soundwave, structural elements; rolled/cut/dress/welded steel tubes/rods, primed. Soundwave; the Floral elements are bonded to the structural elements. The whole Soundwave is then painted with a primer ready to accept the mural paint. The Sound-waves are suspended in the space using a Professional Cable Suspension System, specified by the EOR (see engineering drawing for details). The mural is painted directly onto the mural-cloth, with a clear varnish applied as a top coat, this is done at the Artist‟s studio The mural is painted directly over the primed surfaces of the Birds/Soundwaves, with a clear varnish applied as a top coat; this is done at the Artist‟s studio. This can be done with a Swiffer® or a microfiber cloth on a pole, using a personnel- lift or similar. This is recommended once per year or once every two years (or more frequently if there is a good deal of dust in the space). The sculpted figures can be occasionally lightly cleaned (as required) using a slightly dampened (water/mild soap solution) lint free cloth. Light actions only should be used. The paint finish can be touched-up/repaired if damaged, by a suitable professional using the appropriate paint/colors and sheen (The surface has a hand painted paint finish, with a lacquer overlay). The hard-coat can be repaired if damaged (cracked/punctured), by a suitable professional. The clear varnish (lacquer) acts as a UV coating to protect the paint surface below, the varnish should not need reapplying throughout the life of the Artwork, however Golden (paint) has stated that in general, re-varnish is recommended at about 5 years. Outline installation procedure - equipment; scissor-lift, boom-lift, wheeled dollies. 1. Phase-site inspect 1. 2. Using a boom-lift, go into each skylight and measure the areas on which the Artwork (mural cloth) will be applied, to ensure the Artwork sizes are correct. (By others) Using a boom-lift, go into each skylight area and create an inspection hole in the cross-beam board-work. Within the hole, check for internal elements within that may need to be considered in order to hang the Bird elements. Measure the steel I-beam, ceiling and board- work etc (see eng-drg), to ensure the Bird/perch steelwork frame will fit correctly. 1. Phase-site prep 1. 2. 3. 4. (By others) Using a boom-lift, go into each skylight area and remove the cross-beam board-work (and stud-work if req) in the area of where the upper-hanging-pipes will be located. (By others) Using the supplied jig to ensure the correct distance apart, install the upper-hanging-pipes via their integral clamps to the steel beam, clamping to the required engineering specifications. (By others) Patch and paint the board-work with the upper-hanging-pipes protruding from the boards under the cross-beam, clean tubes as req. (By others) Install required ceiling support framing above the ceiling, in order to support the ceiling boards at the Soundwave hanging points (refer to locations on eng-drg). 1. Phase-skylight Artwork 1. 2. Using a boom-lift, go into each skylight and clean/prepare the surfaces onto which the mural-cloth will be applied. Using a boom-lift, go into each skylight area and install the pre-painted mural cloth onto the skylight wall recesses (area between skylight structure framing) and bulkheads. Apply adhesive to surface, lay mural-cloth onto adhered surface so as to omit any air bubbles/creases, flatten and trim to size. 4. Phase-Birds/perch - Each Bird figure will be whole and permanently attached to the Perch cross-member as one piece (via a welded connection at the feet) . The Perch cross-member attached to the Bird is no wider than the Bird itself. The Perch hanger pipes (upto the split point) and cross- member extensions are welded together as one piece, these elements mechanically fix to the cross-member portion that is attached to the Bird. The hanger pipe above the split point has welded clamp plates, these elements will clamp to the building I-beam and be pre-installed. In summary, each Bird is fabricated in x5 parts: x2 upper-hanging-pipes (pre-installed), x2 lower-hanging-pipes, x1 Bird/cross-member. 1. Each Bird/perch arrives in 3 parts with the Bird/cross-member mounted on a (padded-transport) wheeled-dolly for ease of handling/installation. Unload the Bird/perch/dollys off the shipping truck using a forklift. 2. 3. Wheel each Bird/perch into the atrium space and assemble the Bird/perch parts together using the inbuilt mechanical fixings (see eng-drg). 4. 5. 6. Using a boom-lift, attach a chain-hoist to each of the pre-installed upper-hanging-pipes, via eye-bolts screwed into the pipes. Once each Bird/perch is assembled (and orientated correctly), position under the relevant hanging points within the atrium. Secure the Bird/perch to the chain-hoists. Release the dolly strapping holding the Bird/perch. Using the chain-hoists lift the Bird/perch up to the receiving upper-hanging-pipes. Slide pipes into one another and securely fix (see eng-drg). Once secure the chain-hoists/eye-bolts can be removed and the eye-bolt holes plugged. 7. 4. Phase-Soundwaves 1. Using a boom-lift mark the locations of the Soundwave hanging points (see eng-drg), and drill the required holes to take the hanging fixings. Install hanging fixings to the ceiling. Attach the hanging cables to the ceiling/hanging fixings and leave the cables to hang Unload the Soundwave/dollys off the shipping truck using a forklift. Each Soundwave is in 3 parts and mounted on a (padded-transport) wheeled-dolly for ease of handling/installation. 2. 3. 4. 5. Wheel each Soundwave part into the atrium space. 6. 7. 8. 9. Manoeuvre the scissor-lift so that it is under the relevant Soundwave hanging points/cables. Remove each Soundwave part from its dolly, 2 person lift onto the scissor-lift. Raise the scissor-lift so that the Soundwave hanging points are close to the cables. Attach the cables to the Soundwave hanging points, then connect each Soundwave part together with the inbuilt mechanical fixing (see eng- drg). 10. Allow the Soundwave to hang and adjust the cables to evenly tension/position.
