The title alludes to both the changes that Dr. Givens fought for and made in the city as well as the literal waves that happen in the pool as people play, cool off, and splash. The colorful artwork has a kinetic visual element that changes depending on the viewing angle. The red and yellow colors represent the movement of the sun over the course of the day from sunrise to sunset. Viewed from one direction the background of yellow daytime sun will be more visible and red will be more apparent from the opposite side referencing the sunset hours. A poster board and markers allowed for free expression in response to this question. Peace, relaxation, cooling off, exercise, fun were some of the most mentioned answers. Each person received three “drops” and were told to vote for the answer that resonated the most (splash), 2nd (ripple), and 3rd (drip)- 28 people voted (a total of 84 votes) The jars that received the most attention were Healing/Spiritual experience, Health Benefits, and Space to connect with community. With Healing/Spiritual Experience being the clear winner in the voting. The project also allowed for me to have conversations and community and connection was the subject that people mentioned most. They were able to pick 2 different colors and see how the layers mixed to make a third color. Making WavesMelissa Borrell -Givens Pool Final Design Artist Narrative Inspired by the community engagement at the Carver Museum as well as the work of Dr. Everett Givens who fought for equal rights and city development for the African American community in Austin, the sculpture at Givens Pool is titled Making Waves. The wave formation embodies the ideas of a healing and spiritural experience, the importance of community and the changes that Dr. Givens fought for in this sculpture that will serve as a shade structure by the pool. Alluding to the peace and comfort that ocean waves bring, the happy greeting of friends, and the force of Dr. Givens’ civic engagement Making Waves is a colorful reminder of the values of the community Givens Pool serves. The bright colors are inspired by the bold African prints that were being worn during the Juneteenth celebration. Making WavesMelissa Borrell -Givens Pool Final Design Dimensions Front View • The artwork will consist of 3 sections • Each section will measure 12’ 6” wide and 10’ deep • artwork will be mounted below the new shade structure frame • the shade is at a slight angle to promote water runoff • The sculpture will drop 24” max so that the clearance above the pool deck is 10’ minimum Making WavesMelissa Borrell -Givens Pool Final Design Materials • The sculpture will be fabricated from 1/8” aluminum sheet and aluminum C channels • The wave shapes will be CNC cut out of flat sheet. • Aluminum C-channel will be cut to match the length of the wave shapes • The stucture will be connected with stainless steel bolts insulated with nylon washers to prevent galvanic interaction between the aluminum and steel • All elements will be painted with autobody enamel paint for maximum protection from UV rays. Durability: Rated for high UV resistance, moisture protection, and excellent color retention. Expected Longevity: Maintains gloss and color integrity for 10–20 years in direct sunlight and outdoor exposure. Resistant to fading, chipping, and cracking with proper substrate preparation and topcoat.
