• Project: South Lamar Corridor Project • Artist(s): Wanda Montemayor • Phase: Final Design Review • Sponsoring Department: Transportation and Public Works Department • Project Budget: $116,000 • Council District: District 5 & 9 (Artwork will reside in District 9) • Project Manager: Ryan Runcie AIPP PANEL MEETING AGENDA ITEM #9 DATE:1/13/20 25 SOUTH LAMAR CORRIDOR AIPP FINAL REVIEW Artist: Wanda Montemayor Budget: $116,000 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT REVIEW May, 2022 Two virtual meetings were held. Dec, 2022 A meeting specifically for local residents and businesses. Guests were prompted with these guiding questions: • What are some things that represent South Lamar to you? • What are your favorite stories or historical landmarks? • Are you interested in volunteering with tile making or with the mosaic? A large portion of Wanda Montemayor’s community engagement happens during fabrication. She plans to invite community members of all demographics to use specified clay molds, scribe messages into wet clay, and learn about her communally creative practice. Sept, 2023 Family Day at Umlauf Sculpture Garden Wanda created approximately 100 ceramic flowers with about 100 community members and families during a workshop held at the Umlauf. The flowers will be utilized in the final installation and serve as inspiration for the to-scale 18" x 18" maquette. Nov, 2023 Fabrication of maquette frames Community members joined at the Community Arts studio to design and fabricate ceramic maquette frames. Respected ceramic artist Lisa Orr joined to help guide the designs. The maquette will highlight the differences between the framed stories and the hill country-inspired landscape in the background.  COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT REVIEW Nov, 2023 Open House at Community Arts studio Community members joined at the Community Arts studio where people shared their South Austin stories while making tiles that will be integrated into the project. Dec, 2023 Austin Mosaic Guild community outreach / engagement Regional mosaic artists will engage with local area artists to create tiles and hear stories and history about South Austin. At our discretion, we may conduct additional tile-making workshops in the community at future dates. ARTWORK NARRATIVE The mural moves like the rapid expansion of the downtown Aus7n area toward the South through the turn of the century. Exploring the last century in South Aus7n to the present day, we find a wealth of musical history from musicians to shops to venues. But before that, South Lamar was an important commerce route for moving goods, caCle, corn, and coCon. The nearby rivers and watering holes were vital to the existence of this area, so they will be featured throughout the background. Na7ve bats and monarch buCerflies will be seen flying in the background carrying a sense of rhythm and color we all resonate with. And we will also include other flora and fauna, including the Holiday House alligator. Some of the musical loca7ons we may feature are the Broken Spoke, Heart of Texas Music, the Saxon Pub and South Aus7n Music. Other loca7ons of focus include Barton Springs Bap7st Church, MaC’s El Rancho, Lamar Union, Maria’s Taco Express, and Peter Pan mini golf. High-fire clay and porcelain 7les will provide excellent durability for the serpen7ne wall. Making the surface- covering out of 7les allows me to be very crea7ve when designing. We will engage the community in 7le- making workshops in personal and meaningful ways. Par7cipants personalize 7les that get integrated into the overall design. And much like my Deep Eddy Mural, these same par7cipants can come back year aRer year, find their 7les, and reminisce. It creates a deep sense of community. To enhance the connec7on to the mosaic, 4 to 6 suppor7ng video vigneCes approximately 2 to 3 minutes in length will be produced to reinforce the visual storytelling. We will engage prominent, and well-known Aus7nites to expand on some of the features focused on in the mural. We are proposing to provide a QR code and web address to take viewers to City-hosted and maintained video vigneCes. WORK IN PROGRESS OTHER ARTIST PROJECTS WITH SIMILAR EXECUTIONS OTHER ARTIST PROJECTS WITH SIMILAR EXECUTIONS This example in Uvalde, TX, shows how the background will be executed. Fields of flowers, indigenous flora, hills of grass, and almond-shaped elements create flowing water. Smaller tiles, clouds, and native insects make up the sky. FABRICATION ➤ All tiles created by the artist and participants will be fired in a high temperature kiln firing for both the greenware, bisqued, and glazed tiles. ➤ The mosaic is then constructed on mosaic back support mesh using WEDI adhesive and sealant and Ardex epoxy grout and adhesive. Mosaic back support mesh Using this mesh allows for flexible pre- installation layout and adhesion Blue Moon Glassworks, Delphi Blue Moon Glassworks, Delphi MATERIALS SPECS ➤ See attached spec sheets MAINTENANCE ➤ Based on my experience with similar mosaic murals, the site will not need any maintenance or cleaning unless damages are reported. No power washing is necessary - hosing down the installation once or twice per year is adequate. ➤ Within the first year of fabrication, if major damage occurs due to faulty fabrication, we are expected to make repairs at our cost. ➤ In the case of damage due to vandalism, we will assess the amount of damage and what repairs would be necessary. ➤ See attached Conservation Review VIDEO PRODUCTION To enhance the connection to the mosaic, 4 to 6 supporting video vignettes approximately 2 to 3 minutes in length will be produced to reinforce the visual storytelling. We will engage prominent, and well-known Austinites to expand on some of the features focused on in the mural. Interviews will be interwoven with historical photos relevant to the stories. South-Austin centered vignette topics may include musicians and instrument shops, nature and local history, dance clubs and live music venues, pop culture, restaurants. See the following page for potential interviewees - our initial focus will be on those in bold. We are proposing to provide a QR code and web address to take viewers to City-hosted and maintained video vignettes.
