Notions of the cosmos, interstellar play, and wonder. I believe this artist has the potential to create experiences that are inspiring, that tell compelling visual stories, and that could pair wonderfully with sound design. There is a wonderful visual complexity to the work samples that is made accessible by pattern, repetition, and the artistic use of geometry and symmetry. Powerful storytelling tied to travel. Already thinking deeply about Austin and the airport. Organically works with community as part of the process. Exciting work. A spectacular mix of tech and craft, high concept and community-minded. Could be quite amazing. 10 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Jim Campbell Journey, 2014 Aluminum panels, LEDs, handmade blue glass spheres, computer, custom electronics 750’ x 10’ x 6’ San Diego Airport Terminal 2 San Diego, CA 11 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Jim Campbell Day for Night, 2018 11,000 custom LED fixtures, camera, computer, custom electronics 100’ x 100’ x 150’ Salesforce Tower San Francisco, CA 12 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Jim Campbell Helical Trace, 2022 Aluminum panels, wire, LEDs, hand made glass spheres, custom electronics 20’ x 20’ x 20’ Luma Hotel San Francisco, CA 13 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Jim Campbell SELECTION PANELIST COMMENTS Very mindful of community and site. Interested in innovative technologies. I was especially drawn to his collaboration on the Salesforce projection project, utilizing the work of local artists on a consistent basis, [as well as] his responsiveness to community's request for particular usages... I appreciated the commitment to [community collaboration], and the humility demonstrated with the Salesforce Tower. Exciting possibilities for partnership with local artists in the Austin area, describing his work as a "canvas" that benefits from sharing the space. Fascinating pieces with great description. Light pieces responding to the space. Wants to focus on the nature part of Austin. 14 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Yvette Mayorga Bedroom After 15th, 2022 Installation, acrylic piping on Disney TV, purses, shoes, lotion, wooden shelves, lamp, ceramic, bookbag, sneakers, Hello Kitty bubble blower, clock, faux books, mirrors, wood, pillows, wall paintings, nightstand, acrylic piping on bike, and acrylic piping on canvas. 9 ft x 9 ft x 10 ft The Momentary, Crystal Bridges Bentonville, AR 15 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Yvette Mayorga Scorpion After Ouvrière en Porcelaine, 2023 Collage, mirror, scorpion belt buckle, toy hammers, and acrylic piping on panel 80 in x 43 in x 2.5 in The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum Ridgefield, CT 16 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Yvette Mayorga Until we Meet Again After François Boucher’s “The Setting of the Sun,” 1752, 2022 Fiberglass, acrylic nails, plastic nail charms, faux roses, tribal boots, mylar balloons, found objects and acrylic piping Dimensions Vary The Momentary Crystal Bridges Museum Bentonville, AR 17 Recommended Artist: Tunnel Interface Yvette Mayorga SELECTION PANELIST COMMENTS Connection to the site and community. At an interesting moment of innovation in her practice and could make something quite unique and special. Deep research into their material and how they would move between producers. Appreciate the way in which she is thinking about both international and domestic visitors. All work produced speaks with a double entendre for adults and academics and children. Innovative. Great to see [her current projects] demonstrating an ability to think across scale and audience. Spectacular and very unique! [This] artist could really create something fantastic that would delight and surprise visitors to the airport, while also having a high concept. 18 Recommended Alternate 1: Jean Shin Floating MAiZE, 2020 Plastic Mountain Dew soda bottles, adhesive and vinyl tubing Dimensions Vary Winter Garden at Brookfield Place New York, NY 19 Recommended Alternate 1: Jean Shin Elevated, 2016 Mezzanine Level: glass mosaic fabricated by Miotto Studios, Inc, NY Platform Levels: laminated glass Dimensions Undefined 2nd Ave Subway at 63rd Street Station, NYC New York, NY 20 Recommended Alternate 1: Jean Shin Reclaimed, 2016 Painted reclaimed rebar, steel armature, painted lines incised into concrete Dimensions Undefined Plaza at North Transfer Station, Seattle Seattle, WA 21 Recommended Alternate 1: Jean Shin SELECTION PANELIST COMMENTS Her presentation provided useful insight into her community input/engagement process. It was a good balance between the human experience and the process of artistic abstraction. Continue to be interested in her balance of the aesthetic and a focus on climate justice. Artist demonstrated both experience and humility when describing working directly with the airport/architecture internal group. Very thoughtful and intentional with her projects. Perfectly equipped through her past experience to take on this commission. Love the thoughtfulness of community in her process. 22 Recommended Alternate 2: Carolina Caycedo Nuestro Cosmos / Our Cosmos, 2024 Artisanal cast fishing nets, powder coated steel 40' x 18' x 8' George Bush Intercontinental Airport Houston, TX 23 Recommended Alternate 2: Carolina Caycedo Agua Pesada / Alma' Althaqil, 2022 Acrylic paint, clay, concrete block, sand, cement, plaster, plastic, metal mesh Dimensions Variable Sharjah Biennale 15 United Arab Emirates 24 Recommended Alternate 2: Carolina Caycedo Patrón Mono / Blonde boss, 2018 HD video 4 minutes 32 seconds Midnight Moment Times Square NYC (installation documentation video) 25 Recommended Alternate 2: Carolina Caycedo SELECTION PANELIST COMMENTS Appreciated her description of the usages of feminist and indigenous ways of knowing in her work. It was such a thoughtful and considered explanation of her community engagement process. Rooted in empathy, relationships, and myriad forms and shapes of knowledge. Would be interesting to see how her understanding of migration, movement, and displacement would play out in an airport setting. Lots of potential here. Research driven practice that focuses closely [on] site specificity. Flexible and professional with a deep enthusiasm for the project. Clearly a well-seasoned artist with deep thought and expertise on subject matter. Impressed by flexibility on large-scale projects, as well as planning ahead (re: project that went from vertical to horizonal) ... Very interested in their ability to bring present day issues with a contemporary edge. 26
