To begin, I spoke with Mr. Edward Reznicek, himself, to delve into the history of the park, what it's original purpose was and how he became the namesake. In 1970 University Hills Optimist Club was in search of land to develop for youth sports. Later that year, after petitioning the Austin city council, the UHO, along with parents, friends and local community, gathered funds, broke ground and set off to construct the fields. For the past 50 years, the UHO has facilitated youth baseball, kickball, football and soccer. Mr. Reznicek, a retired architect, who helped spearhead the park project, had the space aptly named after him by the UHO members, parents and community involved. “At it's peak UHO operations hosted over 1000 youth yearly and has provided millions of hours of manpower to accomplish these efforts.” -Edward Reznicek 2 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT RESULTS I took the history of the park, dictated to me by Mr. Reznicek, and created a mural showing the reason behind the park's creation. From the collected community stories, I created a shadow box that focuses on the diversity of the current residents and some of the important and fun facts about the Highland neighborhood and history. The whole piece is created to be an interactive gathering place for all that use the park. It's situated right across from the playground to foster interaction among neighbors. The seating area provides shade as well as place for neighbors to sit and view the art around the whole structure. The entire piece is accented with smaller murals of flora and fauna from central Texas. 3 DESIGN I feel I've created a piece that is visually appealing as well as interactive and functional. Currently, the park doesn't have much seating or shade. My piece offers both. Here is my concept for an art piece that offers a space to rest, take in the new additions at the park, as well as tell some of the history of the Highland community. My hope is that it becomes a focal point for neighbors to share with each other. 4 FINAL DESIGN LEFT SIDE 5 FINAL DESIGN FRONT SIDE – UHO MURAL 6 UHO MURAL DETAIL 7 FINAL DESIGN RIGHT SIDE – REAR AND FRONT 8 FINAL DESIGN 9 FINAL DESIGN 10 FINAL DESIGN REAR SIDE – COMMUNITY SHADOW BOX 11 FINAL DESIGN Inspiration for the layered shadowbox The colors are to show the different layers in the shadowbox. It showcases not only the natural elements all around the viewer, but mixes the diversity and history of the area in the piece. The front mural is about the history while the rear shadowbox speaks to the past and present inhabitants.  In 3 different languages, it says “welcome” Speaking to the diversity in the Highland area. and a place to rest.  It establishes the park as a destination for gathering by offering shade  It's easily maintained as the exterior will have a graffiti coating on all surfaces to ensure easy cleaning should any vandalism take place.  I feel like this piece will add more enjoyment to the park for years to come. 17 ARTIST NARRTIVE The final design is an aluminum and steel framed structure covered in 1/8” aluminum sheeting. It has 1/4” polycarbonate windows for the skylight and the shadowbox enclosure. The ceiling of the seating area has butterfly cutouts revealing a small floral mural, also enclosed with 1/4” polycarbonate. The entire structure will be painted in a sky blue with mural accents. The front mural shows the history behind the creation of the park and the types of sports programs that take place there. The overall theme is about the beauty of the park and what it adds to the community. My piece will add to the existing playground area as a gathering and resting place. A place to reflect on the beauty and upgrades at the park. 18 MATERIALS  6061 Aluminum Sheet  1/8" Aluminum Rivets  1.5"x11g Aluminum Tube  1.5" x11g Aluminum Angle  1.5"x11g Steel Angle 11g  1.5"x11g Steel Tube  1/2" HDPE Sheet  Industrial Acrylic Paint and Enamels  1/2" x 4" Zinc plated Concrete wedge anchors  Exterior Grade Silicone  VHB  Butle Tape  Polycarbonate Sheet  Commercial grade Steel Cabinet 19 PROJECTED SCHEDULE  November 2024: Document and presentation approvals  December 2024: Final design submission  Janurary 2025: Final panel review  February-March 2025: Fabrication, installation and transfer of title 20 ESTIMATED BUDGET Category Estimate Percentage of Budget Design Fee Materials Fabrication (cnc cutting and engraving, assembly, Help choosing materials, finalizing fabrication designs, installation) Engineering Review Site Exemption/Permit Review RAS Review Concrete Pad Insurance (Gen.
