Mural design proposal for Rosewood Specialty Clinic, by artist Bill Tavis For the large wall on the front, I came up with two different concepts. The first concept (A) is a landscape which matches with the treeline on the left, to be reminiscent of the park just behind the building and to connect it with the grass and trees in front of the wall. This is similar in concept to the Bentonville Rock mural in my portfolio, in the way that I made the wall fit into its natural surroundings, even while the pattern makes the image stand out at the same time. This design is just a place holder – the landscape will be further developed if this design is chosen. I feel like this relates to healthcare because it shows life thriving, and the beauty of nature, with uplifting and vibrant colors. The landscape also fits well in between all of the windows. The second concept for the larger wall (B) if to show numerous hands reaching in to form the silhouette of a heart. The hands would be of various skin tones to represent the diversity of the community. The heart and the multiple hands show the care and teamwork of healthcare, showing love to the patients. If this design is chosen, the placement of the hands and arms would be modified to fit better between the windows. The hands would be handled in a style similar to the food items in the Harvest Blessings mural in my portfolio. For the smaller wall on the back, I thought it would be a good place to depict a healthcare worker. I have included two possibilities for this, one with full protective gear (C) and one without (D) - I wasn’t sure which one best represents the services you offer. However, I could also depict someone specific from the clinic, if there is someone there you’d like to honor with a portrait. Whichever face is chosen it would be handled similarly to the self portrait and portrait of Murphy in my portfolio (images for designs on next two pages) A) B) A) B) Bill Tavis Bio Austin-based artist Bill Tavis creates art in a style called halftonism, which is the result of several years of painstaking development. This style has its roots in mechanical printing techniques, which he has adapted in fresh and innovative ways. Halftones use a repeating pattern that varies in relative thickness to create the illusion of shading. Up close, you see the pattern, but as you step back, an image emerges. Tavis uses this concept expressively so that each image is a gestalt in which the whole is more than the sum of its technical and conceptual parts. A mural painted in this style will look different depending on how close you are to it, or if you are looking through a camera, making the in-person experience dynamic and engaging for the viewers. As a practical note, because the colors are painted flat, with no special layering or effects, and there are only a few colors, it is very easy to perform repairs to a mural in this style if that need ever arises. Tavis has painted halftone murals all across Texas and beyond, being recognized multiple times by the local newspaper for the positive impact the murals have on the community. After talking with Sean, he was amenable to us getting preliminary approval to advance the mural at RZ if someone from COA can communicate with him. We will still follow the application process he has outlined. We would just like for the mural work to begin. Thoughts? Thanks, glad to hear the bluebonnet is ready to go. For the tree, I tried to address all the comments in this re-worked design (attached). -The art should bring a sense of calm and ease - the scene of nature and the colors do this -Mural should be culturally specific. Themes of the community - the tree is inspired by live oak trees, some of which can be found in the park just behind the clinic. Also, the different colors in the leaves can be seen as a subtle nod to the diversity of the neighborhood -Art that represents our health team with the patients - the different colors of leaves are also based on the graphic I was provided, to call it to mind without copying it -Murals should be thoughtful - yes I can’t say that I’m into the tiger stripes at all, and I’d prefer something more “flowy” and less stubby looking; at least the branch ends. - I used the leaves to cover the branch ends, and I removed the lower branches to help it all flow better. I also added the color gray to the trunk and branches to knock back the dark orange to help it look less like tiger stripes and more like cross contours of the tree. Let me know what you think! ---- On Fri, 21 Jun 2024 13:39:04 -0500 Sloan, Michael <michael.sloan@centralhealth.net> wrote --- We took your design to our CEO for the tree and he had a few comments as well as Yesenia was able to find the reference photo that he uses in all of his speech's. See below. I think the bluebonnet one is perfect and are in agreement for that one. The tree however we think could use a few tweaks. Let me know what you think aer reviewing these comments. I am sll waing to see when I can get you out there to start. It sounds like CoA is having final blessing since its their building. I will let you know as soon as you are good to start though! Your 50% deposit should also be coming your way soon. I just saw it get approved in our finance system for payment. thanks, Bill Hi Bill, Michael S.
