My experience includes community arts and socially engaged art initiatives with grassroots organizations, non-profits, and higher education institutions. This work earned me a nomination for Texan of the Year by Loray Polk and the Dallas Morning Times. I have taught courses in Art as Social Practice at SMU and currently serve as an Art Appreciation Professor. In my lectures and discussions, I cover topics such as the rhetoric of art and space, murals, graffiti, street art, public art and performances, land art, and issues related to hostile architecture. While I'm not as familiar, I also have a growing interest in the role of new media processes in public space, especially as it relates to nomadic deployment of new media works. I previously served as a critic for Peripheral Visions, a contemporary arts journal. #4 Please describe your public art philosophy and why you wish to serve on the AIPP Panel. Public art should be created for public audiences and informed by public sensibilities, reflecting the lived experiences of those who will encounter the work. Communities should be engaged as key stakeholders and contributors to the creation or fabrication of these artworks. Artists must think broadly about what art can be in public spaces, how it will be encountered, and what it means to the local community. They must do this while maintaining the integrity of their work and proposed projects. In public art, the artist acts as a manager—handling expectations, coordinating teams, ensuring material compatibility, and maintaining the conceptual integrity of the artwork. Public art also involves preserving and reclaiming public space, especially in an era where such spaces are often dominated by advertising, propaganda, and sometimes, deterrent architecture that is as cruel as it is ugly. I love to experience public art and on occasion have made things that are in the public domain. From 2007-2012, I organized the Red Swing Project. Initially, we anonymously hung swings in public places. During that period, we hung approximately 250 swings in 10 different. The project was "open-source" and others were encouraged to hang their own swings. In 2014, the Art City Austin commissioned me to temporarily hang red swings throughout downtown Austin. One highlight was hanging a swing from City Hall that Mayor Leffingwell swung on. In 2015, the Downtown Austin Alliance commissioned Hatch Workshop (my fabrication company) to build a large communal table at the Old Bakery Square Park. From 2018-2021, Hatch Workshop built 30 benches on the Boardwalk of the Lady Bird Johnson Hike and Bike Trail. Art in Public Places - Panel Applicants Andrew Danziger – Small business owner, fabricator #2 Describe any special qualifications or experience you have that is related to the duties of an AIPP Panel member: I have fabricated a lot things that are in the public domain. I think about how things wear over time, logistics related to installation and how it is attached to the Earth. I studied Architecture and am comfortable working through critiques. My time as a fabricator has been filled with meetings that involve stakeholders, artists, Architects and Clients. I enjoy working through ideas that result in a feasible and long-lasting object to be enjoyed by others. #3 Please indicate your affiliations with any arts organization(s) and your role, such as Board of Directors, Advisory board, Staff, Member, or Volunteer. Please also indicate if any are Austin org. I have been hired by many arts organizations in the City but have not served on any of their boards. #4 Please describe your public art philosophy and why you wish to serve on the AIPP Panel. I believe public art has the capacity to change someone's day. I imagine someone is having a bad day and might engage with public art and it makes that day better. I also believe that it can bring strangers together who might otherwise not engage with one another. I hope to serve on the Panel so that I can help bring great art to Austin and share my construction experiences so that it is executed in a successful and long-lasting manner.
