Her enthusiasm and confidence in her ideas, particularly as it applied to the social and environmental history of space were major factors in my selection of her as the artist for this commission.” “Her presentation was inclusive of the environmental and cultural context, a passion for the site and its history, and a strong concept for the piece and its integration with other works in the space.” “Lys was notably skillful in her interview. She conveyed a deep grasp of the complexity of components to be addressed with this art piece. It was her lack of experience with projects of this scale as well as a lesser depth of conveyed artistic expertise in her presentation that caused me to vote for her as the Alternate.” “Lys demonstrated a passion for exploring the site's human history and healing some darker aspects of the past. She is well organized, confident, and thoughtful about how she will proceed. Lys is an emerging artist and her selection demonstrates faith in the future of Barton Springs pool and Austin as a whole.” Portfolio image: Potrait of Sylvia Orosco, 2021 Barton Springs Bathhouse Rehabilitation | Selection Process Recommendation Alternate: Hollis Hammonds Juror Comments: “Hollis presented compelling imagery for this commission. Her existing body of work communicates an emphasis on environmentalism, which is directly tied into the significance of this space.” “Hollis showed a strong understanding of the environmental importance of Barton Springs, and a willingness to educate herself on other historical context.” “Hollis's proposal and interview responded to all the project requirements. Her depth of artistic experience conveyed strong ability to include layered, complex meanings with highly skilled artistic methods. I felt her depth of experience with projects of this scale and her artistic skills and maturity were key in my voting for her a choice number one.” “Hollis has excellent artistic and design skills, top management experience with people and budgets, sensitivity to and knowledge of the project's goal of educating the public about the importance of protecting the water and preserving habitat as well as the cultural history and issues of equality of access to the pool.” Portfolio image: Domestic Brutality, 2019.
