Georgian Acres Neighborhood Park AIPP Project Prospectus & Selection Process Recommendations ARTS COMMISSION APRIL 20, 2020 Georgian Acres Neighborhood: Background District 4 Area was largely unplanned until 2006 Park‐deficient neighborhood Young population; highest amount of children in Austin High diversity; 69.2% Hispanic or Latino (2018) Large immigrant population; 35.6% born outside of the US (2018) Many arriving from Mexico and Central America and beyond Historical territory of the Tonkawa and Nʉmʉnʉʉ (Comanche) people. Little Walnut Creek = main natural feature. Many single‐family, single‐story, ranch‐style homes, as well as many multifamily housing units (or apartments). Artwork Opportunities Possible artwork locations Artist Eligibility Applicant requirements: Professional visual artist, or artist team; At least 18 years of age; and Live in the 7‐county Austin metropolitan area (Williamson, Travis, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Burnet, and Blanco counties). Applicants are ineligible if they are also: Full‐time, permanent City of Austin employees; Employees of the project consultants and sub‐consultants; or Artists who are under an active contract with the AIPP program AIPP Project Goals from GANA Represent and connect Represent and connect the diverse cultures of the neighborhood; Respect and integrate Respect and integrate into the natural environment of the park; Inspire Inspire curiosity and imagination in a visually appealing way; Be Be safe, easily maintained, and vandal resistant in an exterior environment; and Contribute Contribute to the depth/breadth of the City of Austin’s public art collection. Engaged the community to received their feedback on the project goals. Received 13 written reponses and some verbal feedback at the meeting. Requested a project advisor from the community at the meeting but none was identified at the time. PARD PM D'Anne Willaims, AIPP PM Marjorie Flanagan, and Civic Arts' Lynn Osgood also in attendance. GANA president emailed out the AIPP presentation and feedback sheet for virtual association feedback (due 02/09/2020). No additional feedback received at this stage. 02/23/2020 ‐ AIPP project goals drafted (based on GANA's feedback) and emailed to GANA for approval GANA president shared with association via email. Received feedback from one community member. Feedback was incorporated into goals. 02/26/2020 ‐ Revised AIPP project goals emailed to GANA president for her to share with the association GANA president expressed her support for the goals as written via email. No additional feedback received from GANA. AIPP project goals finalized. 02/28/2020 ‐ Polly Thurston and Jenny Black confirmed as community advisors 03/02/2020 ‐ Meeting with District 4 CM Greg Casar’s Office Presented the Council Member with the prospectus and outreach plan. The documents met with his approval. AIPP requested that he suggest another community advisor (possibly a bilingual Spanish‐speaking parent) and requested his support in promoting the call once released. The Council Member agreed.
